how can a kid listen to music without a phone?

There is a movement to get kids off devices. Smartphone free childhood.
I do not want my primary aged children to have devices.
However, I do want them to listen to music of their choice. They would love a music player on their room, and also wireless headphones if possible.
Without a phone or tablet, or Alexa, are there any workable options? They have CD players at the moment, but can't connect headphones to them.
Sorry if I sound clueless.

Yoto player. You can make your own cards if you can't find the cards you want available.

Scamilton · 01/12/2024 22:03

What CD player doesnt have a headphone socket?

Mum2jenny · 01/12/2024 22:03

Radio, cds, old style stuff aka discs and vhs tapes

We have alexas but they are set up with Amazon kids profiles and you allow/prevent content on there. So my DC have certain playlists allowed and audible books.

Apple are completely missing a trick here

Download songs onto an mp3 player which you could always connect to one of these so you can have CDs and radio as well. Comes with headphone socket.

My dd has an ipod nano 7th generation. Shes delighted with it. I bought it from a local branch of Cex for about £70

I mean, seems glaringly obvious, why have i never thought to get my kids an iPod??? They’d bloody love it! Can you even buy them anymore?

My kids have Yotos but you can’t just search for whatever you want. You can make cards but you can’t just quickly find a song I don’t think? Same issue with iPod I guess although maybe the iPod touch let you do that without having to buy everything from the Apple Store?

DS loves Spotify!

workstealssleep · 01/12/2024 22:11

Thanks all. I have discovered a device which plugs into the headphone jack of a cd player, and enables Bluetooth. I suppose I need to decide if cd and radio is enough for today's kids. I can't get my head around how they would access mp3s. But to be honest all that passed my by. I only listen to cds or radio myself.

Sounds like a stupid question, but those of you whose kids listen to mp3s, how do they get hold of the mp3s in the first place?

Scamilton · 01/12/2024 22:14

You can buy them but rip them from youtube for free instead I admire you swimming against the tide but its an uphill struggle. I suppose they dont need that many albums.

Most people just buy ipads and spotify but I agree thats not great.

titchy · 01/12/2024 22:18

An iPod is just an iPhone without the SIM card - so no need for it anymore.

Why not an Alexa OP?

Wetcappuccino · 01/12/2024 22:28

We are getting DD a Mighty MP3 player for Xmas. You cannot stream Spotify but you can download from Spotify to the device - 1000 songs.

calabalaboo · 01/12/2024 22:35

My DD has an echo dot but with a kids profile and also has an mp3 player and blue tooth headphones.
So she either just asks Alexa for certain songs / radio stations (but as we don't pay the extra Alexa is annoying at times as it often plays what feels is a similarly song rather than the one you asked for 🙄) or we have downloaded songs from our CDs / iTunes etc and put them on his MP3.

Why can't you have an alexa, we have kids alexa and works well as has explicit filter.

Scamilton · 01/12/2024 22:39

What are you all missing? OP wants a ban on devices. Talking to an AI woman on a fucking speaker is the epitome of a device.

Hurdlin · 01/12/2024 22:40

Download (buy) music from Amazon or the like then copy the MP3 files onto an MP3 player. That's what my primary aged DC had for the school bus journey.

workstealssleep · 01/12/2024 22:45

Thanks again.
I'm just getting confused nkw about whether they want speakers, radio, cds.. or MP3s that need downloading first.
I guess we want ok sound quality.
I found some devices that have preloaded apps like amazon music and Spotify, but have no ability to add apps which sounds good. But I'm not sure if the sound quality is good enough. I'll keep reading and thinking.
It is a flat no to Alexa, or anything which could have YouTube etc.

Found your thread looking for the exact same answer. My 3yo always wants to listen to music when we walk anywhere and it's pretty much the only way of getting him to actually walk without moaning or stopping to look at every speck of grass. Usually he has my headphones connected to Spotify on my phone but today he went to the shops with his granny and she doesn't have Spotify so he couldn't have his tunes and moaned the whole way home. Ideally I want something along the lines of a tiny ipod nano, but that can connect to the internet for streaming Spotify. Or maybe just the ability to store songs saved from Spotify, cos realistically the boy only wants Spidey and his Amazing Friends soundtrack on repeat. But same as you, I want zero phone type features. No videos, games, nothing but music. Found this but DH is concerned it looks too much like a phone, which tbh I agree with. There's also the Mighty one but I don't think I'll be handing a £115 device to a 3yo.

Anyone else out there got a bright idea?

I bloody loved my iPod. Hate streaming and now being able to actually buy albums. I’ve had to succumb but argh, i miss the feeling of opening a cd and putting it in the car for a journey.

Cableknitdreams · 03/12/2024 23:12

We have a record player, a cassette player a cd player and a radio.

bravefox · 03/12/2024 23:20

Same problem here when we looked last week. Amazon full of things that look so similar to phones it would make my toes curl every time our 6 year old used it...

OytheBumbler · 03/12/2024 23:26

My children had something like this:
amzn.eu/d/iqdiCMz

I just downloaded playlists from my computer to it and it was tiny. Could connect to headphones or speaker.
