Neighbours obstructing my driveway: to box them in?

PoliticalPossum · 30/11/2024 11:24

Neighbours have form for this. Cul-de-sac that leads into a 40mph main road - so people don’t want to park on main road (even though they absolutely can and many do). Each driveway has space for one car, except mine as we have space for two cars after we extended driveway (removing entire front garden) and dropped curb. All legal.

Came back from my morning dog walk to find neighbour A (who I dislike on principle as they often have crap log cutting equipment for their wood burner or skips on their driveway and so end up causing chaos by obstructing driveways) have fully obstructed one side of my driveway (having parked bumper to bonnet - literally touching - other neighbour B who I really like car). DH parked on driveway. I’ve just parked across my driveway bumper to bonnet with neighbours A, who watched me do it.

They’ll need to go out soon, I know from experience (they always go out about midday on a Saturday). I know Neighbour B is out all day so it’ll be me who needs to move. Needless to say I won’t be.

I’m so damn sick of them. No one else on the road (15 houses!!!) does this. Just them. Every bloody day.

Yes, hope they’re not traumatised.

❓️❓️❓️❓️

I think that must have been meant for the thread by a woman who's husband shat the bed.

DiscoBeat · 01/12/2024 08:55

Get them to move every time, they shouldn't be on a dropped kerb and you can't get in. If they have up keep moving they'll soon get fed up with it and stop.
Nice dog!

Bearpawk · 01/12/2024 09:17

Just wanted to add my admiration for you op. You're a hero!!!

PoliticalPossum · 01/12/2024 11:37

Morning All! Neighbours wife was around this morning (8:30!!!!) - asking if I could move my car as they had to get out and they’d been unable to use their car yesterday afternoon because of my parking.

I was very polite but pointed out they had obstructed my driveway, that it wasn’t the first time they had done so, and I had only parked the way I had because of their poor parking.

She blinked, looked a bit bewildered, and then stood there expectantly.

I sighed and said I was going out in thirty minutes (true) and they’d need to wait until then. I shut the door and went back to watching DDog gaze lovingly at DH as though he’s the one who feeds her and walks her.

I just got home and DH has gleefully greeted me at the door, DDog in arm (looking smug and imperious as she gazed down her pointy snout at me), and told me because he’s a curtain twitcher who spends too much time in our bay window, A returned home and parked at the other end of the cul-de-sac.

I win.

Brilliant update. Long may the parking twats remember and park elsewhere!

averythinline · 01/12/2024 11:48

Congratulations on the parking win..

Perhaps not the most authentic - but definitely the most delicious (the bbc good food one is so bland)!

Hope you enjoy it!

It’s been deleted due to privacy concerns for the OP. Her DH has what sounds like a substantial alcohol problem and after a night out drinking and being abusive to her and their kids he went off to sleep in the spare room. It was only when she went to bed in their own room that she found he had shat the bed the night before and left it for her to find. She also detailed ongoing, abusive shitty behaviour and she was almost unanimously advised to leave with their children.

Twats parking across your drive way. Love the diagram 😂

Rosscameasdoody · 01/12/2024 14:10

Not really understanding why some posters are criticising those who sacrifice their front gardens to accommodate parking and pay to have a dropped kerb. Yes it restricts parking a bit because you can’t park over a dropped kerb, but there’s nothing to stop others from doing the same thing. There was a similar thread a while back and on doing a bit of googling, it appears you can park across a dropped kerb in front of a private driveway as long as there’s no car on the drive. The offence is not a parking one, it’s preventing access to a public highway, so if there’s a car there, you’re committing an offence, if there isn’t, you’re not. I looked on our council website and they confirm this, although they say that they will only take action in certain circumstances unless the offender is blocking access for emergency vehicles.

Oh that poor woman. I’m sorry for my light hearted reply. I hope she is safe now.

Noodles1234 · 01/12/2024 18:05

Urgh they sound grim neighbours.

Maybe your “DH has just popped out for a walk with the car keys, ever so sorry but please can you not park across our drive where we paid to drop our kerb”

Sennelier1 · 01/12/2024 18:18

Have a drink. Or two. No drinking&driving, so they'll have to wait before you're legally fit to move your car.

SometimesCalmPerson · 30/11/2024 11:39

I’m torn on this. Obviously is cheeky and wrong to block someone’s driveway, but then I also think it’s cheeky to double the size of your driveway when you live in a cul de sac because you are effectively robbing all your neighbours of being able to use the space on a public bit of road when needed.

This makes no sense. If you are extending driveway space on your own land, it has nothing to do with the neighbours and has no effect on their ability to park or extend their driveway space on their land.

Petlover9 · 01/12/2024 19:06

Obviously I don't know what you normally do indoors, but if it happens again I would keep the house lights off and the curtains drawn and find a good book to read upstairs and ignore the doorbell. Also have a word with your County Councillor and see what the Council's law is regarding parking across dropped kerbs -( if you don't own the drive that the dropped kerb applies to). Sounds like neighbour likes big boys toys !

The title belied the content so you wouldn’t know unless you’d seen it. I opened it up expecting something completely different. Not sure what happened because it was deleted quite soon after posting.
