Neighbours obstructing my driveway: to box them in?

PoliticalPossum · 30/11/2024 11:24

Neighbours have form for this. Cul-de-sac that leads into a 40mph main road - so people don’t want to park on main road (even though they absolutely can and many do). Each driveway has space for one car, except mine as we have space for two cars after we extended driveway (removing entire front garden) and dropped curb. All legal.

Came back from my morning dog walk to find neighbour A (who I dislike on principle as they often have crap log cutting equipment for their wood burner or skips on their driveway and so end up causing chaos by obstructing driveways) have fully obstructed one side of my driveway (having parked bumper to bonnet - literally touching - other neighbour B who I really like car). DH parked on driveway. I’ve just parked across my driveway bumper to bonnet with neighbours A, who watched me do it.

They’ll need to go out soon, I know from experience (they always go out about midday on a Saturday). I know Neighbour B is out all day so it’ll be me who needs to move. Needless to say I won’t be.

I’m so damn sick of them. No one else on the road (15 houses!!!) does this. Just them. Every bloody day.

But if OP has council approval for a dropped kerb - which she says she has - then the council will have already looked at position and impact when providing approval.

Obviously. But that's not to say it doesn't affect the neighbours does it.

I'm not convinced by all those saying "they could build double drives too". Front parking gardens look terrible unless they are gravel, well maintained and have plants. That's time money and effort.

I bet the narrow road means there's no enough room in the front gardens to make it look anything but a used car lot if everyone did it.

I didn't say it wouldn't affect the other neighbours. I was simply responding to a post which queried why people were allowed to do this 🤷‍♀️

@PoliticalPossum I used to live in Central Asia and your posts about the ovkat there are making me so homesick!

Forget the parking, I’m here for the dinner inspo and dog photos

Heaviestdirtyestsoul · 30/11/2024 19:49

Aww love a cocker! Love a parking thread, love a good diagram, love a new recipe- can I stay?

labamba007 · 30/11/2024 19:52

This thread has everything 😂

Brahumbug · 30/11/2024 20:01

This. There is a road near mine with all the houses in a type of long terrace situation with small front gardens. But just about everyone has removed their front fence or wall and made dropped kerbs. What it means is that there is literally nowhere for ANYONE else to park, as even parking on the road, a public highway, it means they are blocking someone's driveway. It's very unfair as it means the residents of the house can still park on the road in front of their own house as well as their driveway (or even instead of!) if they want to, or let their visitors do it, but no other members of the public can. It's very difficult if more than one car wants to visit one of those houses as there literally is nowhere to park without walking 15 minutes away. Very hard on elderly people or those with a physical disability or other medical issue, or young children.

This sounds like an unofficial CPZ.

That dog is giving massive Ena Sharples vibes.

Your Chuchvara reminds me of Shish Barak (xh is Arab and our ds loves it!) I don’t blame you for turning away your cheeky neighbour. It takes bloody ages to prepare. The last thing you need is a CF disturbing you while you’re cooking!

MitochondriaUnited · 30/11/2024 13:37

@CurlyhairedAssassin if people don’t extend their driveway and park there, they’d be parking in the road instead. So there would be no more space available to park for anyone else.

Re the elderly and disabled.
they live there or have family living there and it’s much better for them to be able to park right in front of the house they’re visiting or living in. Aka to have a bigger driveway.
And more to the point, there will be more parking space for them to do so (space on the driveway plus space on the road) rather than the original position which was space on the road only. As you rightly pointed out.

Id say it’s a plus for the elderly and disabled wanting to visit tbh.
And if abled people use that space and the disabled person has to walk 15 mins, it simply says a lot about the abled person who didn’t want to give up their parking spot….

The point being that a dropped kerb takes away a shared parking space. In my part of London you will get a fine for parking across any dropped curve, even your own. In addition any applications for a dropped kerb will only be approved if you can enter and leave your driveway in a forward gear. It’s not unknown for people to install a turntable to overcome this.

I’m torn on this. Obviously is cheeky and wrong to block someone’s driveway, but then I also think it’s cheeky to double the size of your driveway when you live in a cul de sac because you are effectively robbing all your neighbours of being able to use the space on a public bit of road when needed.

This is really silly because if they weren’t in their own driveway they’d be using the parking space anyway! So yes they’ve removed a space but they’d be parked in it anyway so it has no impact on the amount of spaces available in real terms.

FloofPaws · 30/11/2024 23:13

I think he's got the point then if he's gone out on foot - well done for being strong!

Smartstuffed · 30/11/2024 23:34

I feel that in your desire to make a point and return the inconvenience you missed an opportunity to ask the neighbour precisely why they thought it was okay to park across your dropped kerb.

They were on the spot and you had them at your mercy, as it were. You could have said that, on this occasion, you would move your car. That might have focussed their mind for future parking.

Plus you'd have shown yourself to be the better person, despite the inconvenience. And, thinking ahead, if they were to do this again you could then reinforce the message by making them wait longer, because you were reasonable the last time but they obviously didn't get the message. You gave them the rope and they chose to hang themselves with it.

The added benefit is that if, say, they were to call the police you'd potentially look more reasonable having already given them a chance and they'd likely look like unintelligent idiots.

I admit I'd have been very tempted to take the course you did but sometimes the long game plays better to our advantage.

Only if they are permanently parked there.

Just found this thread and it's brought me immense joy 😂 OP you've handle the questions like a star. Recipes and animals are a fab bonus. Not backing down from cheeky neighbour. It has it all! Many thanks 😂😂😂 ps hope the dinner was fab am adding it to my list of things to cook xxx

The neighbours put skips on the driveway. This can cause damage. Does drainage run under the driveway, sewers, incoming water supply gas supply. If @PoliticalPossum is concerned she can speak to the council, skip company, gas insurance company and water board. This may save costly repairs and inconvenience
