Neighbours obstructing my driveway: to box them in?

PoliticalPossum · 30/11/2024 11:24

Neighbours have form for this. Cul-de-sac that leads into a 40mph main road - so people don’t want to park on main road (even though they absolutely can and many do). Each driveway has space for one car, except mine as we have space for two cars after we extended driveway (removing entire front garden) and dropped curb. All legal.

Came back from my morning dog walk to find neighbour A (who I dislike on principle as they often have crap log cutting equipment for their wood burner or skips on their driveway and so end up causing chaos by obstructing driveways) have fully obstructed one side of my driveway (having parked bumper to bonnet - literally touching - other neighbour B who I really like car). DH parked on driveway. I’ve just parked across my driveway bumper to bonnet with neighbours A, who watched me do it.

They’ll need to go out soon, I know from experience (they always go out about midday on a Saturday). I know Neighbour B is out all day so it’ll be me who needs to move. Needless to say I won’t be.

I’m so damn sick of them. No one else on the road (15 houses!!!) does this. Just them. Every bloody day.

Why do neighbours B and C not park on their driveways? Why is B parked outside yours rather than outside or opposite their own house?

I agree if people have more than one car then one goes on their drive and the other on the road or / and in front of their own drop kerb. Thus only taking up ( despite two cars ) one road space.
If someone has one car then of course they’ve still got the spot in front of their own drop kerb. Thus still only taking up one spot on the street.

I don’t understand why people with two cars are parking all over the place.
It doesn’t seem ( with the small road width ) that the road is suitable for two cars unless everyone does as you have done OP and widen the parking at the house frontage and extend their drop kerbs.

Agree of course the neighbour in front of your dropped kerb shouldn’t be there without your permission. They should park in front of their dropped kerb or extend their private parking as you have done.

Completely off topic, but I’d never heard of chuchvara. Have now googled it and would like a recipe and a dinner invite, please!

I normally park my old camper in front of my driveway so that I'm only taking up one space. Unfortunately, the camper is acting up and going into the garage on Tuesday. (I suspect she's not going to survive.) For the first time in a long while, I've moved up a bit (still in front of my house) to leave the driveway clear in case the camper goes completely kaput and I can't get out.

@PoliticalPossum Never mind the parking situation!

I am more interested in your chuchvara - it's ages since I had it and now I want it!

Hope it turns out well.

They look complicated OP !

I'm loving the diagram! Why couldn't he park in front of his own house?

Snazzysausage · 30/11/2024 15:15

Excellent. It's been way too long since we've had a live drive drama. Stay strong OP, stay strong!

@Dyslexiateacherpost88 I have an update!

He came around about 30 minutes ago and asked if I could move my car so they could get out as they were boxed in. I said no - didn't offer any excuses. He huffed and puffed and asked again. I said no again and then offered my apologies and said I was very busy cooking dinner (Chuchvara for those who are interested) and shut the door in his face.

About 10 minutes later the whole family left by foot to go to wherever they go on a Saturday afternoon.

He will be back again, I am sure, and I will be ready.

I would have said something like “sorry you want me to move my legally parked car because you parked across my drive again and that inconveniences you?” And then never answer the door to them again.

Park here. So they can’t get in their house.

Or call and get them towed

@user1471538283
I’m guessing it’s because the road isn’t wide enough for cars to park on both sides of the road.
OP said you have to park right up against the kerb to make it passable. Just a guess though.
Although unless it’s one way or market out parking they could all park in front of their own drives technically. It would make life much more difficult for everyone though, especially as most have two cars but only one offsteet parking spot.

FrangipaniBlue · 30/11/2024 15:35

SometimesCalmPerson · 30/11/2024 11:39

I’m torn on this. Obviously is cheeky and wrong to block someone’s driveway, but then I also think it’s cheeky to double the size of your driveway when you live in a cul de sac because you are effectively robbing all your neighbours of being able to use the space on a public bit of road when needed.

No she isn't.

Presumably her car was parked on the road before, extra width on a driveway will take up less space than the length of OPs car did before.

She's actually done her neighbours a favour by reducing the cars on the road by 1 and freeing up a few extra inches.

HooMoo · 30/11/2024 15:37

Seriously 😆

Whoops was meant to quote the person who thinks OP is being selfish for extending their driveway.

MissMoneyFairy · 30/11/2024 15:39

Is c parked on your drive

I’m going to have to agree a bit with @SometimesCalmPerson on this.

Although I also think everyone should do the same as OP, just extend along the road with drop kerbs and increase off street parking for everyone.

This, of course, would be unreasonable if it wasn’t a cul de sac and near other facilities where people needed parking.

LightSpeeds · 30/11/2024 15:45

Loving the diagram...

Soontobe60 · 30/11/2024 15:45

Why are the other neighbours parking their cars outside your house to stop A from parking there? sounds pretty pathetic to me.

EssentiallyItsTrue · 30/11/2024 15:54

I'd want to leave him blocked in but I wouldn't want to risk going to war with a neighbour.

Delatron · 30/11/2024 15:55

You have done the right thing.

I do think as a road you all need to work this out better. Could A park round the corner towards the end of the cul-de-sac?

Could B/C not fit 2 cars on their driveway? Or just block their own car?
You seem to have everyone parking outside your house bar C.

Obviously A needs to clean up his drive to park there. You might want to also be clear to him next time and ask him not to park across your drive. I do like your style though.

JawsCushion · 30/11/2024 16:03

Extra points for saying about the neighbours nice cat even if Im not understanding the car placements as not where I expected.
