Getting the joke 30 years later - just me?

HappySquid · 29/11/2024 21:10

I have just realised that Shaun the Sheep's name is a play on words (Shaun/shorn). Feeling rather sheepish.

Has anyone else come across a joke that only sunk in many years later or is it just me?!

why did the chicken cross the road,
to get to the other side
ie death
is a recent realisation for me

😱

Just got that now you've explained.
Whaaaaaaat

HS1990 · 30/11/2024 06:30

Recently. In Lion King.

When Zazu is giving his scout report to Mufasa, it's all different animal puns...

"buzz from the bees is that the leopards are in a bit of a spot"

"Cheetahs never prosper"

"I told the elephants to forget it ... but they can't"

😂

Cross and sauce rhyme in Hiberno English too.

Craw-ss/ saw-ss

(Sitting criss cross applesauce means to sit cross legged with your hands in your lap.)

In fact, I can't think of a British English accent where the two words don't rhyme. Could be wrong there, probably am...

The episode with the Auto/ Otto Show pun wasn't the only Otto pun. Otto Mann is the character's name.

They don't rhyme in any English accent I can think of. For example Iam from the SE of England (Home Counties) and now live in the NW and they don't rhyme there or here. Scottish and U.S. are the only accents I can think of where they do.

Whereas I couldnt imagine a British accent where cross and sauce do rhyme? 🤣🤣 Cross like boss, moss, doss, and sauce like horse, force,.

I love the difference in accents

I love accents too, but I find it really odd that so many people seem to find it hard to imagine things sounding different in pretty familiar different accents from their own part of the world! I can instantly 'hear' in my head how 'sauce'and 'cross' would sound in lots of different accents in the British Isles if I think about it.

Cross rhymes with boss
Sauce rhymes with horse

in my East Mids accent.

Hope this helps. Grin

I'm with you. Can't think how they'd rhyme!

It took me a good few years to get this joke from the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

It's unpleasantly like being drunk."
"What's so unpleasant about being drunk?"
"You ask a glass of water.

I can do this to an extent. And I can't think of an accent where cross and sauce rhyme in the UK. Which accents is it?

Bearing in mind the original poster said they couldn't think of a British accent where they didn't rhyme, which was rather bold as a statement!

Sandyelbow · 30/11/2024 06:55

That’s so sad about the final piggie. I think there is a picture in an old red ladybird book of him with his little basket skipping along a road, heading away from us 😢

It rhymes in my Scottish accent. I can’t make sauce rhyme with horse sauce definitely rhymes with sauce. It will in most British accents I can think of apart from the south of England.

Nah, that's something people came up with reasonably recently to add a meaning onto a joke that doesn't need an additional meaning.

OH. MY. GOD.

This thread is revelation after revelation. I'm hoping to get to the reason for the T in t-shirt soon - I also thought it was because of the shape.

EDIT: I can see a. I'm not alone in my surprise, and b. there appears to be some debate about this.

I'm confused! Can you try this again?!

The sauce rhyming with sauce bit!

I got the alleys but somehow didn’t notice Grimmauld Place.

You're the reason I've only just got it now!

BeardofHagrid · 30/11/2024 07:22

That strawberries are called that because you’re supposed to put straw round the berries to help them grow. I missed the memo 😂

How did anyone not realise what House of Fun was about?

It's there in the lyrics..

'a pack of party hats
with the coloured tips...'

'This is a chemists,
not a jokers shop'

Maybe I knew far too much as a child!

I was well into adulthood and had a child when it came out and I didn't realise until this thread. I suppose I just didn't listen to the words. I got that it was about sex but not condoms.

LegoTherapy · 30/11/2024 07:31

I'm not getting how Shaun and shorn aren't the same sound? Perhaps in an Irish accent they aren't but I'm still confused. The au is the same as or. Isn't it??

In my accent “cross” has a short o, but “sauce” rhymes with “source”. I can’t think of a word in a US accent that has a short o in the way that I’d say it.

And my accent is bog standard non-rhotic North of England.

Im blaming sleep deprivation 😁

Imagine a person with a North American accent would say them? “Au” is more like “ah” and “or” is more like “ore”.

Exactly! And I've been accused of being dense because I didn't get the 'joke' about Sandy Shaw's name too....

Someone else might have asked this but how else could it be pronounced?

JawsCushion · 30/11/2024 07:36

I didn't get K9, the dog in Doctor Who was a play on the word canine..
