Getting the joke 30 years later - just me?

I have just realised that Shaun the Sheep's name is a play on words (Shaun/shorn). Feeling rather sheepish.

Has anyone else come across a joke that only sunk in many years later or is it just me?!

@JellyBeanFactory The whole song is about masturbation.

Absolutely no it’s not. And they’d be absolutely horrified. I can guarantee it. It’s not that 👍

zeddybrek · 30/11/2024 01:39

Harry Potter, Diagon Alley.

Diagonally.

Only got that one recently.

It’s ok, I only recently worked out that one of the little piggies didn’t go off to the local shopping market! I’d always pictured them with a wicker basket topped with a chequered covering, which would be swinging away in their hand as the dear little piggy skips to buy their loaf of bread, fruit and veg!

Poor piggy was off to a different type of market 😳🫣. I know I wasn’t the only one on here to think this, so ‘fess up the rest of you 😁.

Yeah but feel like this was an image we saw somewhere in childhood (as I have the same memory of the little basket).

Who remembers the early '80s song "House of Fun", by Madness? Only in the past year have I realised it's about a boy who has just reached the age of consent and is on a quest for condoms. Full marks to Suggs and the lads for creating a song and video so quirkily esoteric that I could watch it on TV in full view of my parents without their or my twigging to its true meaning!

Gatecrashermum · 30/11/2024 01:46

My Italian husband had to point out Shaun the sheep pun. I was genuinely gobsmacked!

Also had never got smarties have the answer....feel like a total idiot

Topsyturvy78 · 30/11/2024 01:51

I used to think a song was called The Venga boy's are coming. But it was the Venga bus is coming.

Oh come on.

Come on what? I know one of them very well and I’ll ring him tomorrow he’ll be horrified but still working on his new movie for the kids 👍the trio are not perverts

In which film? Wallace isn’t in Shaun the Sheep. I get that for people with a certain accent, including Wallace from the Aardman films, ‘Shorn’ and ‘Shaun’ are homonyms. I’m just pointing out that the joke doesn’t work for all accents because the two words are pronounced differently.

Here’s the clip about Shaun the sheep getting his name, and Peter Sallis of course.

I don’t know what it’s really about, but even if it is masturbation it doesn’t make them perverts.

He won’t be horrified since it’s very well known (whether it’s true or not) and they’ve been interviewed about it etc. so even if it isn’t correct, they’re very well aware and it’s old news. I think you mean you are horrified

Shaun was introduced in A Close Shave, a Wallace and Gromit film

Grimgrump · 30/11/2024 02:18

On an old Australian show there was a (racist) character called Mahatma Cote. I never got the ‘pun’ until an Aussie explained it, because in my accent one wouldn’t say “M’ hat, m’ coat”.

I suspect that says more about you! Having a wank or writing a song about it, is not perverted!

So Knockturn Alley will send you bandy then? (Clue, its dedicated to all things dark).

Not being mean honestly! I got Diagon Alley straight away but Knockturn Alley took me more than a couple of years!

"Box of balloons, with the feather light touch"

How could you not know?!

CrocsNotDocs · 30/11/2024 02:27

My friends have never let me forget the time I wondered aloud about what the T in t-shirt stood for.

Pudmyboy · 30/11/2024 02:28

A very recent one, for me: there's an ad for one of those 'trace your family tree' sites where two blokes are sitting on a sofa, one of whom has just found out he is distantly related to a famous psychic so obviously feels he is psychic too. The phone rings, the other bloke goes to answer it and the 'psychic' bloke says 'that will be your dad', to which the other bloke says 'no, it's my mum's neighbour 'uncle' Tony', and goes back to the call, whilst the 'psychic' bloke looks a bit startled............
Of course, 'uncle' Tony is the other bloke's real dad!

OnlyinBlackandWhite · 30/11/2024 02:28

I'm obviously quite thick as I didn't know most of these!

If it’s all so filthy and mucky complain and stop your children from watching the filth immediately.

Song subjects - More than Words - by Extreme, described as a lovesong
when it is about blatant sexual coercion
or
Ken Dodd’s ‘Happiness’ take away the ‘h’ and what do we have here,
’apenis, ‘apenis, the greatest gift that I possess,
I thank the Lord that I’ve been blessed with more of my share of ‘apenis

rowdily sung by young men who only know the chorus

User964253 · 30/11/2024 02:55

Song lyrics are often the topic of debate and more so as cultural norms change. I don’t think more than words is about coercion at all but it’s certainly saying “you need to show me you love me and not just say it”
