Getting the joke 30 years later - just me?

I have just realised that Shaun the Sheep's name is a play on words (Shaun/shorn). Feeling rather sheepish.

Has anyone else come across a joke that only sunk in many years later or is it just me?!

To be fair, it's more obvious when you know he's from A Close Shave - he comes out of the Knit-o-matic fairly well trimmed, and Wallace says "Let's call him Shaun." or something like that 😁

I took ages to twig that Knockturn Alley was a play on 'nocturnally', and only got the joke 'What do you do if you see 50 elephants coming over a hill?' 'Swim for it' about 10 minutes after being told it.

If it’s all so filthy and mucky complain and stop your children from watching the filth immediately.

Are you OK? It wasn't me that said it was filthy or indeed, perverted..

Song lyrics are often the topic of debate and more so as cultural norms change. I don’t think more than words is about coercion at all but it’s certainly saying “you need to show me you love me and not just say it”

Also, The Police' 'I'll be watching you' has very dark lyrics and really it's about stalking (Sting has said as much) yet people consider it a romantic song and play it at weddings as a first dance

"Box of balloons, with the feather light touch"

How could you not know?!

Ha, because I am clueless, even in my dotage. Meanwhile my DD 16 is right on to all the innuendoes in music, movies and life in general. That said, I do think "House of Fun" is a very clever, subtle song disguised as a boisterous dance number. Madness put out some amazing music that I still love.

Countrydiary · 30/11/2024 03:29

I did get Shaun the Sheep at time of Close Shave, I remember feeling very proud of myself 😂Harry Potter been reading for 25 years and all the names are a revelation though!

Song subjects - More than Words - by Extreme, described as a lovesong
when it is about blatant sexual coercion
or
Ken Dodd’s ‘Happiness’ take away the ‘h’ and what do we have here,
’apenis, ‘apenis, the greatest gift that I possess,
I thank the Lord that I’ve been blessed with more of my share of ‘apenis

rowdily sung by young men who only know the chorus

We used to sing it like that in assembly Grin

My friends have never let me forget the time I wondered aloud about what the T in t-shirt stood for.

Erm…what does it stand for?

I always thought they were called that because they make a T shape when you lay them flat.

marmamia · 30/11/2024 03:56

Ummm. For those of us in the back could someone please explain the elephant joke?

Do you mean on the WTF childhood memories post? If yes, his penis was implied to be the trunk.

CoalTit · 30/11/2024 03:59

It took me about 20 years to realise that the name of Otto the school-bus driver in The Simpsons was a play on words; "Otto" and "auto" are both pronounced something like "ah doe" in the north American accent of the show's writers and actors.
I was a bit quicker with the pictures of owls sitting cross-legged that have been making the rounds of the internet lately accompnied by captions about sitting "criss cross apple sauce"; it only took me a few months to realise that "criss-cross apple sauce" makes a little rhyme if you pronounce "cross" and "sauce" as "crahs" and "sahs" (or " crass" and "sass") and "Criss-cross apple sauce, spoons in the bowl" is a rhyme a lot of north Americans learn as kids.

Pepperama · 30/11/2024 04:03

OMG, Harry Potter… I got diagonally but never realised the others - nocturnally and grim old place… Can’t wait to see if my ‘I know everything’ kid got this 🤩🤩🤩

My youngest was taught this in reception - cross and sauce dont rhyme in my accent (Berkshire) but the rest of it is ‘Criss cross apple sauce, this is how we sit of course. Hands in our baskets!’
Not sure if they added the ‘of course bit’ for those of us with other accents, though now trying to think of one where cross and sauce do rhyme!

WiddlinDiddlin · 30/11/2024 04:44

How did anyone not realise what House of Fun was about?

It's there in the lyrics..

'a pack of party hats
with the coloured tips...'

'This is a chemists,
not a jokers shop'

Maybe I knew far too much as a child!

No there was some kind of joke which has gone whoosh over my head about 50 elephants coming over a hill and the pun is "swim for it". I normally get every joke really quickly but I'm lost. Apparently only me so that's embarassing. I did get the trouser pocket penis one. Thanks for replying. Still mystified😁

Sunraysunday · 30/11/2024 04:52

@marmamia i think it’s coming (as in cum) over the hill? Gross 🤢

Cross and sauce rhyme in Hiberno English too.

Craw-ss/ saw-ss

(Sitting criss cross applesauce means to sit cross legged with your hands in your lap.)

In fact, I can't think of a British English accent where the two words don't rhyme. Could be wrong there, probably am...

The episode with the Auto/ Otto Show pun wasn't the only Otto pun. Otto Mann is the character's name.

tunainatin · 30/11/2024 05:34

I thought the wombles were 'common'. To be fair, they did take home rubbish...

PicturePlace · 30/11/2024 05:39

Shaun the sheep only works if you live in a part of England where they mispronounce their "r"s as "w"s.

undercoverhero74 · 30/11/2024 05:45

@marmamia I don't get the elephant joke either! Nor do I know what the T in t shirt stands for 🤷🏼‍♀️

WillowTit · 30/11/2024 05:58

why did the chicken cross the road,
to get to the other side
ie death
is a recent realisation for me

ForAvidQuail · 30/11/2024 01:52

Come on what? I know one of them very well and I’ll ring him tomorrow he’ll be horrified but still working on his new movie for the kids 👍the trio are not perverts

Not disputing you know him but having a song which maybe makes a veiled reference to masturbation hardly makes them perverts.

Re More Than Words - Gary and Nuno have repeatedly stated that it is just a love song. About people who say I love you, but don't act like it. Their view was that actions speak louder than words, so you wouldn't have to say it if you were behaving like you do. Something many on here complain about, so it isn't a farfetched concept.

Whereas I couldnt imagine a British accent where cross and sauce do rhyme? 🤣🤣 Cross like boss, moss, doss, and sauce like horse, force,.

I love the difference in accents

AndCoronets · 30/11/2024 06:25

Feeling gormless as I didn't realise most of the above.
And my more basic realisation - The Peter and Jane books, I only saw the pun in Pat the dog about 40yrs too late 🤦‍♀️

AndCoronets · 30/11/2024 06:27

I also thought the T in T-shirt meant the shape of it, doesn't it?
