Assisted Dying Bill tomorrow.

I really hope this goes ahead.

I'm from a family who die from cancer. It's a genetic thing. Over the years I've watched numerous loved ones die from this cruel and ravaging disease. It has taken a massive toll on us. From PTSD to immense guilt, complicated grief and fear of the future.

Not all of my family would have accessed Assisted Dying, but I know some did want it and requested it in the weeks / days leading to their death. They should have had the option of shortening their suffering. Having witnessed what they went through, I want that option for myself.

I want it for my mother. For the past 20 years she has told me when she wants out and how I will have to help her achieve it. I don't want to. She apologises for putting it on me. She shouldn't have to.

No one will be saved if this Bill is stopped, but fear and suffering will be reduced.

The big killer in our family is Parkinson's, but that wouldn't be covered by this bill because it's not recognised as a cause of death in its own right. So it'd be part of the "slippery slope" going forward when people realise what this bill doesn't cover.

Through to second reading. Majority 55.

Thank goodness for that. My faith in our democratic system is (slightly) restored.

Slothtoes · 29/11/2024 14:26

They’ve gone off to vote now.

Comedycook · 29/11/2024 14:26

Disgusted with the vote.

Best of luck to the vulnerable

I wonder if one extra safeguard might be to introduce some sort of legal contract people who don't want assisted dying can sign saying they never want this for themselves under any circumstances?
It's completely unnecessary imo but might take some worry away it they could sign some sort of 'not for me' register.
I don't think it would placate people because I think they want to stop others, who desperately want it, using this to ease their own passing. It might be something though.

I think this is an excellent idea

There are only so many things we should be asked to give up ourselves in order to protect others. Control over our own death is not one of them.

At last an end to the cruel status quo, but do our MPs have the balls to do it.

Yes, they do.

Thank you Labour. I never thougth I would say that.

Comedycook · 29/11/2024 14:30

Its sick. Like some weird dystopian novel. Best of luck...

Very true but it's also open to others having control over your death in the way of abuse and coercion 😔

You HAD control over your own death! This vote has put the most vulnerable in society at increased risk of abuse. It is horrendous.

Thank goodness they did the right thing. I'm so pleased.

Comedycook · 29/11/2024 14:32

Are we going to have to specifically ask for this...will doctors be allowed to suggest it or will it be law that they can't suggest it?

pavementgerms · 29/11/2024 14:34

I've seen people die, over days, in pain and indignity. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

No I didn't - not in all instances - which is exactly that this bill is about.

You sound nice

No I just don't want sick vulnerable people to be coerced into dying. Yes what an awful person I am

And you still don't.
This is a MASSIVE step back in terms of who we are as a nation.

Thousands of people die on the roads each year and many more are seriously injured.

Should we ban driving because of this?

Nothing is risk free.

ohdelay · 29/11/2024 14:36

I can't get my head round a country without the death penalty going for assisted dying, potentially for the very vulnerable once mission creep sets in.

If we don't want the death penalty even for child murderers because wrongly taking one innocent life would be worse than doing nothing, how do we make a different argument for assisted dying. I'm personally for both, but would have started with the murderers.

NotOneOfTheInCrowd · 29/11/2024 14:36

Well, those people in favour better hope you never become disabled. I mean doctors already pressure women into terminating disabled babies, so why not disabled people who are already here.

Maybe at the point a patient has less than 6 months to live they will have some kind of capacity assessment and the option explained to them ?

Not until the bill passes and even then, not as much as I would like, but far more than I had before.

In your opinion. In mine it is a massive step forward.

Well you sound even nicer, wanting people to suffer.

Yes, there are risks to everything even crossing the road, should we stop this incase someone gets run over?

Slothtoes · 29/11/2024 14:37

Its extremely worrying. We already know there’s loads of problems with the Bill. How can it be approved when we don’t know how it’s going to work or how much it will cost. How much it will erode trust in doctors and public authorities. How frightened and guilty it will make ill, elderly and disabled people feel. How much it’s going to make women vulnerable specifically. It’s not going to improve palliative care. It’s not going to improve social care to help people live comfortably with illness and disability.
