How often do you wear make-up? Poll

noblegiraffe · 27/11/2024 09:32

Having a chat with a group of friends I was surprised at how many of them said they never wore make-up or only special occasions, and not to work. I assumed that not wearing make-up was quite rare, so I’m interested in a wider sample to see if my friends are odd! It’s hard to come up with every option so please pick the closest answer.

I’m interested in answers from women so if you’re male and want to see poll answers please click the male option!

A couple of years ago I would have said Never but ive ended up.choosing Special outings. I've started wearing mascara again recently, probably around once a fortnight or so. I wear a neutral lipstick about once every three months. But I wear Rose Vaseline on my lips daily, like using a nice high SPF face cream, have bought a high end perfume and spend a lot on my hair. It's just that I think the vast majority of women genuinely look better without makeup, or at least the skill level needed to make it look really good in daylight is not that common.

muddyford · 27/11/2024 16:02

I said Never but I sometimes use brow mascara and lip gloss. Expensive scent every day though.

noblegiraffe · 27/11/2024 18:53

I'm finding this poll fascinating. More women saying they don't wear make-up to work than do, I wouldn't have predicted that.

Never

Ponderingwindow · 27/11/2024 19:00

I rarely wear makeup. Even when I do, most of the time it’s just tinted moisturizer and then I darken my eyebrows because they are so pale they aren’t visible and put on some mascara because again, my lashes are nearly white.

strangeandfamiliar · 27/11/2024 19:13

Every single day since I was about 14 (so 40 years!) It's part of my routine, takes 3 minutes, and I feel weird and uncomfortable without it. I'm blonde and pale so it helps to tamp down the shine and give my features some definition. Wore a lot more when I was younger, but these days it's a light powder foundation, mascara, brows, tiny bit of blusher and a pinkish nude lipstick.

Nice to see the results of the poll split pretty evenly between the four categories. It's good to know that women can do what they like and not feel judged.

I'm quite surprised with how it has turned out given what I was thought was the immense societal pressure on women to manage their appearance.

Pressure from where? I have never felt pressure, sure there is make up advertisements and these days if you choose to follow vloggers who wear it but where is this constant pressure that everyone keeps on going on about with every aspect of being a woman?

I can't see it have felt any pressure from anywhere just because I am female

Catsmere · 27/11/2024 20:24

I haven't worn it for thirty years. Even then it was only lipstick and eyebrow pencil.

UnravellingTheWorld · 27/11/2024 20:27

I used to wear light makeup every day, but stopped when my eldest was born. Now it's only for special occasions

ApolloandDaphne · 27/11/2024 20:29

Maybe two or three times a week.

NailsHairNipsHeels · 27/11/2024 20:29

Every single day unless I'm not leaving the house/seeing anyone which is very unusual.
It's just part of my getting ready routine and I look terrible without it

you don’t have to give in to the pressure, though…

TheChosenTwo · 27/11/2024 20:34

Never to work and occasionally if I’m going out but I go out a lot and maybe put some makeup on once in every 5 times or so!
I’m just really lazy and never wore it as a teen or young adult, only started buying it in my mid 30’s so was never confident about application.
Also if I look horrific without it’s not my problem, I don’t have to spend time staring at my face 😂 with the exception of teams calls and even then I’m tiny in the corner of the screen or just camera off.

EveryDayisFriday · 27/11/2024 20:37

If I'm not leaving the house or only going to the gym, I don't usually bother unless I'm on a teams call.
I don't wear much make up, a little concealer, blusher and lip colour. Just a bit of healthy glow and cover the dark under eye and spots.

Animatron · 27/11/2024 20:44

I find it really strange when women say they look dead or ill without makeup. Some of my friends say this too. But they don't. They honestly just look like normal women. I think they are reacting to the difference from their self-concept of their face, maybe because when you put makeup on you spend a lot of time looking closely at your face so it gets in your mind like that.

I have said this a few times to friends who are feeling oppressed by their makeup but they say really fiercely that they "look dead" without it and that people ask them if they are ok.

I really think this is just because of the contrast but they really really do not. (I don't bring it up any more! I'm not an anti makeup crusader. But they just look... normal?)

Yeah I don't think I personally give into pressure that's on women to manage their appearance in that I do nothing with my hair and I'm certainly not into fashion, I just got into the habit of wearing make-up when I was a teen, probably concealer for spots, and just carried on. Except now instead of spots it's dark circles under my eyes I'm concealing.

I wonder if there are women out there who dye their hair or care about clothes but don't wear make-up?

You say they don't look dead without it, but do they look better/fresher with it?

When I was in my 20s my Mum never wore makeup apart from a bit of lipstick if she was going out to a family meal or similar. I swore that I would always make more of an effort. Now in my late 50s I wear makeup once a month at most, absolutely none for work. I went for a rare night out at weekend and couldnt wait to take it off again. I see the make up tutorials on You Tube with contouring, highlighting, shading etc and just think it all looks like hard work!

I don’t wear makeup (bar lipstick probably once or twice a year) but I dye my hair, am very interested in clothes, and wear perfume and different jewellery selected every day.

PermanentTemporary · 27/11/2024 21:08

I've said earlier that many/most women look better without it, but maybe it's more honest to say that they look different. It can take some getting used to a make up free face if you're used to the full whack on there.

I think there are sectors where it's still expected for women to wear makeup - i cant remember the outcome of tribunals for aircrew for example. In theory I'm not actually allowed to wear some forms of makeup at work, it's in the dress code (eg nail polish). People do, though.

Ineffable23 · 27/11/2024 21:13

I don't wear make up, but I used to. I stopped at university because I wanted 10 minutes of extra sleep in the mornings. I started thinking I should wear it for work but then on day 3 of my first job out of university they told us it was the equivalent of a man not having food in their beard (i.e. that we should be wearing it as a matter of course). I'm a stubborn bugger so that was the last day I wore make up to work.

I'll put some lipstick on maybe once a month. I am worse at doing my make up than I was when I did it regularly so I really don't mainly bother at all now. Maybe once a year I wear some more than that.

Mum2jenny · 27/11/2024 21:13

Technically I’m not permitted to wear makeup or nail polish at work, however some do wear nail polish but makeup is totally forbidden. There are makeup removal wipes available in case anyone visits as they will be forced to remove any makeup.

Where do you work!?

NoEscapingMe · 27/11/2024 21:19

Every day. I keep my nails short but natural. Hair cut and colored as get greys so colour every month and gradual tan most days is applied so I have a year round glow.. it makes me feel better and isn't that time consuming
