Even Christmas day she was kept in a drawer - oh how can someone be so cruel
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4gz1dv8ly2o

The drawer where the child was kept, open underneath a cream divan bed with a blanket inside showing where the girl lived for the first three years of her life.

Cheshire mother who kept her baby hidden in a drawer for three years jailed

Prosecutors say the girl had "never known daylight or fresh air" when she was found.

I just couldn't believe this when I read it. I feel awful for the social worker, I'm not sure you'd ever recover. And how this can happen. And the mother I just have no comprehension of. The poor, poor child. I just only hope she gets all the love, care, stability and development she needs.
She deserves every protection.

The social worker will have seen far worse. I didnt read anywhere that the baby had been physically harmed. From the article I've read it says the social worker walked into the bedroom and saw the baby. Doesnt say the baby was hurt in any way, surrounded by filth ect

Not excusing what the mother has done but seriously doubt the social worker has been traumatised by walking into a room and seeing a baby on the bed or in a draw.

You cannot be serious. Have you read any of the reports? The child was severely malnourished, dehydrated, had matted hair, was covered in rashes, couldn't crawl, walk or talk, or make any communicative gestures, didn't recognise what food is, had an untreated cleft palate, had poor muscle bulk, floppy limbs and swollen feet in an abnormal position.

Quote from the social worker.
"Having been a social worker since 2006, I have never experienced such an extreme case of blatant child neglect and cruelty"

I havnt read anything where it says the mother physically abused the baby? Neglected definetly,

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 27/11/2024 01:22

It’s an absolute miracle when you think of it that this little girl is still here. She obviously has a very strong and determined constitution.
I’m Praying for her Healing and that she now knows nothing but love and security and that it isn’t too late for her to form an attachment.

7 years is a pathetic piss take and an insult to that poor little baby.

oakleaffy · 27/11/2024 01:23

Honestandkind · 26/11/2024 23:31

My first thought was rape too. She was completely detached from her pregnancy and must have gone through labor alone, in secret. People don't usually do that - again I'm also not excusing the neglect at all - it's absolutely terrible.

But there's something to this case that hasn't been published

Even the judge was baffled as to why this woman was so inexplicably cruel to her daughter.
Had she been raped, don't you think she'd have said so ?

Seems she was just plain cruel here.

Really ? Are you seriously splitting hairs about this? Of course the child was abused by that level of neglect. Do you think starving a child and keeping her confined isn't "physical abuse"

Read this and then say she wasn't most cruelly ABUSED.
Are you crazy? It's the worst abuse I and others have read of for many years.

Forced into a tiny drawer. Encoffined.

No kind words, little girl had appalling rashes and deformed feet from being crushed into such a small drawer.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 27/11/2024 01:29

From The Guardian report

The girl had been born in the bathtub of the home in Cheshire in March 2020 but had been kept secret and never registered

oakleaffy · 27/11/2024 01:29

The apologists for this frightful ''mother'' just beggar belief.

You can read exactly what I'm saying so why are you trying to insinuate I'm saying somthing different?

I didnt say it wasnt cruel. I said I couldnt read anywhere that said the mother physically abused the baby so couldnt see why the social worker wouldnt be able to get over what she saw

I know social workers who have seen children with cigarette burns, missing hair, houses an absolute shit hole ect. I cant see what the social worker would struggle to get over, seeing a disabled baby in a bed or a draw. Doesnt say the baby was covered in faeces or surrounded by filth ect

Again, before you want to try and twist what I'm saying... I'm not saying anything the mother did is okay, just saying I havnt read anywhere where it says the mum physically abused her

ticktickticktickBOOM · 26/11/2024 20:43

Who said 'never for a second'? Please don't make shit up.

I'm sure most parents can be sensible and use their own experience and initiative when it comes to their children's safety.

2/3 minutes while you have a shit or a shower = yes
2 days on their own in a house = no

See? It's easy

"Two minutes is too long to leave a baby or toddler unsupervised."

Your words @ticktickticktickBOOM

Are you all right? Seriously, the almost three year old child was the size of an eight month old baby. Had been stuffed in a drawer to the point her limbs were swollen and her feet were deformed. Had, it has been said, most probably never been bathed in her life. Was there, malnourished, withered, with matted hair, and clearly had never seen life outside. That is physical abuse.

Pluckolit · 27/11/2024 01:57

On MN when men commit horrific crimes they are evil bastards (good, so they should be).

When women do likewise they must be rape victims, mentally ill, "must be more to the story".

Sorry but the mental gymnastics is just astonishing. Plenty of us have been raped, abused, mentally very, very unwell, and we may have been very imperfect as mothers as a result (I know I have) but we haven't kept our babies shut in drawers for three years whilst merrily going about our daily business.

This woman will have had a psychiatric evaluation and if there were any mitigating circumstances those would have been referred to in sentencing. They weren't.

I’m sorry to say that I feel really upset by this being posted on here. If I wanted to read the news, I would. This has absolutely floored me and I’ve actually been in tears as a result of even reading just the headline. I came here to say I don’t think you should share this kind of content on here and if you do, you should put a trigger warning. And before anyone comes at me with snarky comments, I’ve never before expressed a need for a trigger warning. This is mumsnet not the BBC.

Was the title of the thread not a big enough clue that you might not want to read the thread??

lots of things are very upsetting, but they will be discussed on here, it's a chat forum not a forum for only fluffy bunnies. You might find netmums more your style.

we're all sad & upset...

CoffeeAndPeanuts · 27/11/2024 02:18

ticktickticktickBOOM · 26/11/2024 20:08

Well, not really.

There were 3 years worth of other days the child was left and neglected.

Christmas is completely irrelevant and if they've put that in to make the story 'newsworthy' then the journalist that wrote it is sensationalising a childs suffering.

I think it's two things. It's a specific time he remembers the wee one being left alone for a very long time, much more memorable than a wet weekend in May)

and secondly Christmas isn't irrelevant.

Moulook31 · 27/11/2024 04:16

Absolutely shocking. I could not stop thinking about this. Surely the partner and others coming to the house must have known. You cannot hide something like this alone.
