FML undercooked chicken

My son & I had gluten free frozen chicken dippers tonight cooked in the air fryer, I've made them before for the exact same time and temperature so I'm not sure if the air fryer is maybe on the blink. Anyway they were warm but not piping hot, tasted a bit different, I ate two and gave the other two to the dog. My son ate 1 full one and half an another before saying to me that it tasted different - I pulled his apart and they were slightly pale pink 😭

I am a severe emetophobe. I've spent the last 2hrs shaking like a leaf and have had a panic attack. Neither of us have ever had food poisoning before. I don't care about diarrhea, cramps etc I only care about throwing up.

What are the chances we won't throw up? I'm crying writing this.

You'll be okay but maybe look for some help to support you as that is a difficult reaction for you to live with and not great for your child to see.

ImTheOnlyUpsyOne · 24/11/2024 20:35

I think there's a chance you'll be ok and no throwing up, because I've read on here people who have accidentally eaten uncooked breaded chicken goujons and been fine.

I think this type of processing can sometimes be different to completely raw fresh meat.

I'm obviously not an expert. But I'm sorry you're feeling so afraid and anxious. Perhaps just try not to think about it, in all likelihood if you still feel OK now, neither of you will be sick.

Take care

I'm afraid without seeing it it's hard to tell sorry.

It was white on the outside just under the bread crumbs and then when pulled apart pale pink.

I've tried. I've had CBT and I'm on citalopram, I've had this phobia for nearly 30 years and can't get rid of it. I'm desperately trying to hide my fear from my child.

Most frozen chicken type things (goujons etc) are cooked first then frozen.

you’ll be fine.

PoissonOfTheChrist · 24/11/2024 20:41

I'm surprised someone with severe emetophobia doesn't triple check that foods such as chicken are properly cooked!

No one here can tell if you'll become unwell or not. Best thing you can do is just calmly prepare bowls/buckets to vomit in if needed. Have some antibac wipes about to wipe down taps etc

I tried to check the packaging but it doesn't mention that it's pre cooked. If it was pre cooked before being frozen wouldn't it be fully white anyway?

Goujons are not raw when you buy them. You are reheating them.

Yes, they should be really hot, but nowhere near the danger of eating actual raw chicken

I do if it's a new item I'm not familiar with cooking but these I've cooked so many times in the past that I trusted myself. Won't ever trust myself again.

Are dippers the same rule as goujons? I'll get a picture of what it was.

Google tells me they mostly contain raw chicken and are part cooked to set the batter.

The birds eye ones say very clearly they contain raw chicken. The Sainsbury ones have instructions for handling raw chicken safely - but don't mention it directly.

Given that it was pale pink inside - I would think it was raw.

Keep an eye on your son and be prepared with towels etc. - but it doesn't really mean you will be sick. I gave DS similar raw nuggets by mistake once and he was fine.

HighHeelsOnCobblestones · 24/11/2024 20:57

If it did make you ill, it may not make you throw up. I did eat a couple bites of undercooked chicken breast once. High temperature, tummy cramps and diarrhoea was the result. I felt rubbish for several days but no throwing up. The bug that usually causes food poisoning with undercooked chicken is campylobacter and it doesn’t tend to make you throw up.

I’ve also had chicken look a bit pink under the fluorescent kitchen light but be white when looking at it near the window in sunlight. Maybe it was ok.

fivebyfivebuffy · 24/11/2024 20:58

If it helps I am also phobic and I e had campylobacter from chicken a few weeks ago
Was never sick with it and it's uncommon to be sick with it, and campylobacter is the most common food poisoning from chicken

I just(!) had cramps and diarrhoea for 11 days (ended up on antibiotics)

I guess what I'm saying is even if unluckily you did get food poisoning from it, it's not common to be sick with that type

This is what I was going to say. Diarrhoea would be far more common.

I also have pretty bad emetophobia so I do understand how you feel!

If there was a trigger for starting this then getting EMDR therapy could really help. Or hypnosis.

Thewholeplaceglitters · 24/11/2024 21:00

Hopefully you’ll be ok.

as a fellow emetophobe I’d really recommend a meat thermometer going forward. Gives me so much peace of mind.

JawsCushion · 24/11/2024 21:00

Not trusting yourself is not sustainable. Please get some help.

HereForTheFreeLunch · 24/11/2024 21:00

Sorry - my post probably wasn't helpful. Hope you are both ok and don't get anything.

Neodymium · 24/11/2024 21:02

some chicken meat can be pale pink when cooked if it’s come from the thigh. If you cooked them for the correct time it’s probably cooked just thigh meat. Was it translucent pink? Raw meat is more translucent.

Highlandfandango · 24/11/2024 21:02

Aside from the practical suggestions about getting help, can I also suggest a digital meat thermometer. Dh and dd have similar anxiety to you around food poisoning and this is the only way they will eat meat if they can see it’s up to a safe temp

Haribosweets · 24/11/2024 21:03

I had camparlobachter when I was younger from uncooked chicken and wasn't sick as in throwing up. I did have servere diarrhoea though and lasted about a week. It was a few days though before the symptons started. Hopefully you'll be OK but be prepared just in case

This is the most reassuring thing I've heard. Thank you so much. Did you feel nauseous with it? I had no idea it was uncommon to vomit with that type of infection, just assumed it was a main symptom.

Thank you. I had no idea this was the case and if it's true it does help reassure me. I can do diarrhea and pain, but I cannot do nausea and vomiting.
