Why are there so many threads where people are typing things like sh1t or tw@t rather than shit or twat?

We all know the word you mean so it won’t damage our delicate sensibilities to see fuck, shit or cunt written out in full.

posters can do what the heck they like OP 😕

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 23/11/2024 14:25

I personally find the word tw@t to be very vulgar! 😉

Because some members find it offensive. So if you want advice etc from the widest audience you dial your normal language with family and friends back.

the arrogance to think that you speak on behalf of the whole of mumsnet 😆

frenchnoodle · 23/11/2024 14:32

It's bizarre as they are saying it anyway.

I’d rather not have to read them at all, in any form.

Exactly. If you don’t want to use a swear word then don’t use it. Don’t half use it.

OP posts:
roastiepotato · 23/11/2024 14:34

If people want to half use it why the f_ck does that matter so much?

FiveTreeHill · 23/11/2024 14:34

I hate this attitude

Personally I'm a fan of a swear word, but I don't care if others aren't. Every single time a poster mocks someone else for using asterisks for a swearword it reminds me of primary qchool when people would brag about 'knowing the f word'

Garlicpest · 23/11/2024 14:34

I find it mildly irritating, too. Worse when they use asterisks, not realising it will make all the text between two stars come out in bold.

I'm not a dck but it boils my pss. (See?)

Well there are probably sites you'd find more suitable.

netmums for example, but put your sunglasses on!

Because it doesn't read fluidly. It's annoying.

Wasn’t the tag line for MN at one point ‘the one with the swearing’?

OP posts:
herecomesautumn · 23/11/2024 14:57

It's one of the shifts on Mumsnet in the last couple of years.

People join a site then complain about the conventions and before you know it the site has changed.

Now it's all * and "be kind" and hubbies and huns

Hunning used to get you shown the door.

Changing letters to symbols makes me think that they are attempting to bypass swear filters - which would then imply knowingly breaking forum rules…. I’ve used forums that replace the word with another or star out the word, and therefore the poster is trying to be clever with a bypass

The thread title did cast me back to when I was invited to join the moderators on an old forum - I was invited, accepted and the next thing I knew was being tagged in a conversation with something like …. “You can fucking say any shit in here tommikka” …. Which took me a minute to realise that it was the private moderators area. Then browsing I found a conversation that went :

Shall we invite tommikka into the moderators?
who?
tommikka.
Tommikka who ?
tommikka tommikka, you know - tommikka
Oh yes, tommikka. Of course

followed by …. Another who? And so on

Merrymess · 23/11/2024 15:05

All the prissy pretend swearing fucks me right off. Either swear properly or don't swear. MN doesn't censor swearing so there's no need to censor swear words.

Yes it was. Dont understand why posters asterisk a swear word out, what's the point? Either swear or don't swear. Also I've seen posters being told off for swearing yet on this tnread we've already had posters demanding people not to police other people's language.

Merrymess · 23/11/2024 15:12

One of the reasons I like MN is because they don't censor sweating.
