Why are there so many threads where people are typing things like sh1t or tw@t rather than shit or twat?

We all know the word you mean so it won’t damage our delicate sensibilities to see fuck, shit or cunt written out in full.

Changing letters to symbols makes me think that they are attempting to bypass swear filters - which would then imply knowingly breaking forum rules…. I’ve used forums that replace the word with another or star out the word, and therefore the poster is trying to be clever with a bypass

The thread title did cast me back to when I was invited to join the moderators on an old forum - I was invited, accepted and the next thing I knew was being tagged in a conversation with something like …. “You can fucking say any shit in here tommikka” …. Which took me a minute to realise that it was the private moderators area. Then browsing I found a conversation that went :

Shall we invite tommikka into the moderators?
who?
tommikka.
Tommikka who ?
tommikka tommikka, you know - tommikka
Oh yes, tommikka. Of course

followed by …. Another who? And so on

Eh?

Someone described it once as the coarsening of public discourse. I find I agree. People like Simon Cowell and Gordon Ramsey have brought the tone down a lot. I’m tired of hearing swear words everywhere, I’m tired of hearing swear words in pop songs on the radio when I’m in the car with my kid. I’m also tired of hearing about a pop singers’ sex life in the lyrics.
If nobody really cares about swear words, why are they being inserted into everything? Why don’t song writers think ‘kids are going to hear this, do i really need to insert a swear word to feel creatively fulfilled?’ Why I am accused of being a pearl clutcher if i state that I’m uncomfortable hearing certain words in a public forum? What’s the agenda?

MissedItByThisMuch · 24/11/2024 06:21

I agree OP - it’s really fucking annoying. Swear or don’t swear, but don’t be mealy-mouthed about it.

Lots of posts on here don't read fluidly.

So true!
I worry about the number of keyboards missing punctuation keys

Edited because I temporarily missed my 'space' key!

It's not a new thing on MN. People have always been able to swear on here. I'm not going to stop swearing on a forum that allows it just because you don't like it.

I agree, swearing isn’t a new thing, either here or anywhere else.

But, if you don’t like swearing do you find seeing f*ck less offensive than seeing fuck? When I read it I say fuck in my head both times.

I wonder if some people think there is a swear filter on MN? I see little point in writing 'F*ck' it does still read as fuck.

🤷🏻‍♀️ the question was why is it a problem?

not what else bothers you on MN.

Worry all you like.

my iPhone is a pain in the arse, changes things all the bloody time, mixed in with MN's changes (not auto capitalising letters etc) & it's a bit of a dogs breakfast.

I feel lucky if it hasn't changed an important word in my post. I've given up on it changing punctuation.

I haven’t really noticed bad language on mumsnet to be honest. But my post was about a broader issue as to why our public standards are being driven lower and lower and why people are attacked for saying so.

For some reason I find myself slightly more likely to believe they are American. Or American bots. Similar to when I see "seniors" mentioned anywhere. (Or "lawmakers"). A pretty good indicator the post didn't originate in the UK. Which can save time in so many ways. (It's the one weird hack I use to speed up my internet 😀)

I've actually noticed there is a lot, and I mean a lot of " I'm an American and aren't I stupid" style posts, not just hear but in various places around the internet.I do wonder if it's bots.

If it is, it will be bots trained on American content. Which is why it is so amusing to see them target the UK completely unaware of how fucking obvious they are.

Although, nature loving balance and all that, stupid American trained bots can still snare stupid UK posters. There's probably a lesson or metaphor or something there.

Surely it's tw@ the extra t isn't needed. 🤷‍♀️
