Think I will need to stay away from the news today. As I have explained before I am worried about any futures changes to the assisted dying legislation and what that may mean for disabled people. I will say that I have had pause for thought taking into account so many posters experiences of family members suffering.

I will have to trust in the thoughtfulness of MPs and rigour of the process to consider all the issues. For once I am choosing not to doubt their genuine desire to get it right (whatever right is).

DH and I were talking about this again yesterday. He too is fearful of it as a disabled person because of the potential for the criteria to be widened at a later date (I think the proposal is for it to only apply to people who are expected to live less than 6 months?). I agree with him and you. I did wonder if there could be some strong safeguards put in place to prevent this.

DuncinToffee · 29/11/2024 09:18

The vote is around 2.30pm

Yes, it will only apply to adults with a terminal illness who are expected to die within 6 months

They will make two separate declarations of their wishes, which must be signed and witnessed. Two independent doctors must be satisfied they are eligible.
The application must then be heard by a high court judge. The assisted death cannot take place for another 14 days after that decision. The medication must be administered by the patient, not a doctor. It will be illegal to coerce or pressure someone to choose assisted death, with a maximum prison sentence of 14 years if convicted.

My MP has stated her reasons for voting No in the Assisted Dying Bill in a clear, thoughtful social media post. I happen to agree with her reasons but even if I didn’t I think I would respect her opinion. I don’t think palliative care is adequate in all places, but neither does she and has pledged to work towards eliminating those differences. It is very refreshing to have an MP who actually communicates with her constituents. She did go a bit quiet after the election but goodness me, she must have been swamped as a new MP!

Thoughts with those who would like the Bill to progress, for all the right reasons.

27% of the UK adult population have a criminal record, mostly for minor misdemeanours. That's a lot of people to exclude from things.

You say that, but why - as someone who has managed to get through six decades of life without one - not have an advantage ?

The whole point of having a criminal justice system is that the penalties deter people. If society chooses to ignore them, then maybe society shouldn't be surprised that people aren't deterred.

Speeding in particular is treated like a joke. And despite all the pathetic reasons people (who, mysteriously all tend to have convictions) dream up, there really is no excuse.

(For full disclosure I attended a SAC for 35 in a 40 when I was adjusting my speed limiter down. One of the best 4 hours in my life - learned a hell of a lot.)

Elon Musk is celebrating Jenkyns move to Reform if you want to talk about strange

I doubt he knows who she is. Much less cares.

SerendipityJane · 29/11/2024 10:25

Could it be extended to apply to governments ?

BestIsWest · 29/11/2024 10:33

My MP is in the Times today on why she’s voting for. I am very much on the fence still having listened to Kim Leadbeater on several podcasts. I don’t think it will pass judging by what the political commentators are saying.

BestIsWest · 29/11/2024 10:45

Ian Dunt has a very good thread on Bluesky following the debate.

On the one hand an MP found to have told the truth about a minor conviction, on the other an MP found to have lied about being locked up for kicking seven bells out of a young woman...

For disliking Jenkins? Seems pretty normal to me. Are you a fan?

No but these threads seem to select people who are The Enemy and tear into them like voracious wolves. You wouldn’t speak like this to their faces.

Do you not think it might be just that we have seen her behaviour, heard her views and find them repulsive?

I would in the case of Jenkyns. In fact I’d relish the opportunity to tell her exactly what I think of her. And I question why you select these threads for that criticism in light of some of the comments I’ve read about Starmer, Reeves and especially Rayner that appear on other threads.

Fair enough but my feeling is that AJ shouldn’t exist or express their views according to many on here. I see J O’B up thread. His approach is to mock and talk over those he disagrees with. A bit like on here.

I think that's more to do with your perspective. Perhaps it's how you feel about some politicians? Especially those involved in the farming IHT?

What do you actually gain from being on this thread just pointing the finger? Does it make you feel good somehow?

No at all. I find these threads fascinating and hilarious in equal measure. The perfect example of a hive mind.

Right. You seem to be the only one laughing.

I find it quite amusing how some people accuse us of hive mind and mocking and yet seem to think it's fine for them to do that.

What's the difference between JO'B mocking and your mocking?

Heidi Alexander becomes transport secretary

She first became a Labour MP in 2010, but left parliament in 2018 to work for Sadiq Khan as deputy London mayor for transport. She became an MP again at the 2024 election.

pointythings · 29/11/2024 12:22

It's the pesky double standards again. We have to #bekind about obnoxious Tory politicians, or @derxa will come and wag her finger at us, but on all the other threads where Labour politicians are being called everything under the sun, she is silent.

I think you're absolutely right.
