BlueSky- Is it just me with a “Discover” tab full of anime demi porn?

I joined BlueSky a few days ago to see what all the fuss was about. I’ve only followed a couple of dog charities and haven’t posted at all. When I scroll down the discover tab it pretty much looks like:

Anime demi porn
Anime demi porn
Anime furry porn
Mostly naked/fully naked weightlifting male saying hello/good morning to the world
Post about how welcoming and inclusive BlueSky is and how glad the poster is it exists
Political post
Anime demi porn…

It’s 80% shit I have NO desire to see and I can’t work out why. DH has been on it a while and assures me his discover tab is nothing like mine.

WTF. Is it just me? 🤷‍♀️

My Discover feed is nothing like that, but then I follow a lot more people and it’s pretty much related to the types of people I follow. Mind you, I don’t usually bother with the Discover tab, I only use the Following tab.

No anime demi porn on either!

grannycake · 19/11/2024 15:09

Hasn't happened to me either

MissMarplesNiece · 19/11/2024 15:11

This isn't what I get either. Like @mrssquidink , I generally use the "Following" tab, not the discovery tab.

MrsFrumble · 19/11/2024 15:12

Mine was like that for the first few days, but I kept clicking on “show less like this” and now - a week in - it’s much better.

ElleneAsanto · 19/11/2024 15:14

I joined yesterday and it’s mostly cute cats.
(Just edited to say I’ve nothing against cats, but not was I was hoping for)

quoque · 19/11/2024 15:14

No. I followed a couple of hundred people in my specific area of interest/industry and that area of interest is pretty much all I see in my Discover tab, apart from political things those people have engaged with.

I purposely signed up to BlueSky to avoid political things (even those I agree with), so I just stick with the following tab, as well as a few feeds in my area of interest/industry.

I haven't seen anything remotely adult/porn related.

Do a search for Starter Packs.

Some of the kinds of people fleeing to blue-sky will be the ones that hate certain people now being allowed to push back against the trans ideology on twitter.

I imagine lots of those 'ladies' who linked dick pics, death threats and porn to J.K.Rowlings posts about a child's drawing competition will have moved over there.

Lots of censoring going on already, with any mild post tagged with 'transphobia' so I can only imagine it will get worse.

At least it’s not just me- though we seem to be in a small minority. But good to know it goes away eventually.

It isn't just you. I doubt there'll be an 'eventually' with me on bluesky, it seems deeply creepy.

DadJoke · 19/11/2024 15:22

I've not seen anything like this in my Discover.

The great thing about it is if you don't want to see posts from transphobes, maga supporters, anti-vaxxers, or racists it's startlingly easy to block them en masse using blocklists.

BlueSky also has a culture of blocking rather than engaging with toxic people, which means toxic people end up being siloed pretty quickly, and there is no algorithm feeding you annoying clickbait.

Shellingbynight · 19/11/2024 15:54

I joined a week ago and haven't seen anything like that. I set it up straight away by finding and following people I liked on Twitter, and then set up some subject feeds. The Discover tab completely matches what I choose to see, I've never seen any anime.

Have you tried Truth Social? You might be more comfortable there.

AHFBridport · 19/11/2024 16:01

I only follow publishing-related accounts but my Discover feed is 100% anti-Trump posts (I have not personally made any political post or followed any political account). No anime, no porn.

braaaiiins · 19/11/2024 16:04

I've been on it for six months or so and have followed loads of science focussed starter pack and a few online friends. I've not seen any weird porn stuff at all yet.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 19/11/2024 16:11

Give it another month and it'll be back to pornography on the tag of the day, constant adverts and much ranting of the perpetually online, instead of bookcase photos and people claiming to be writing books.

Not a bit of anime porn in my timeline. I wonder how they decide what to feed to you?

WickedGoodDoge · 19/11/2024 16:21

I don’t know if these will get deleted, but to give an example, these were posts #2 and #4 when I went on this morning and then the male bodybuilder was the second or third in my discover feed when I went on a bit later.

I can’t work out why I’m inundated with this type of post. I really don’t care if I’m on it or not so think I will delete the app - don’t think it’s for me!

I love it. I was getting so upset with all the vile racism on X. It was affecting my mood. Then I went on Bluesky and immediately felt calm. It's a much more pleasant environment. Just follow more things you're interested in and your experience will change.

housemaus · 19/11/2024 16:23

Not me! I followed loads of stuff I was interested in straight away, though, so maybe it learned what I liked immediately.

RobinEllacotStrike · 19/11/2024 16:25

I signed up (mostly to grab the same twitter handle to prevent anyone else from using it) and all I could see on there were anime drawings. Lots of them. Lots and lots.

Dull

It's very easy to remove Discover, and chose to follow other feeds.

Just click the # at the top of the page, click Discover and unpin.

You can select other feeds which meet your taste.

DeanElderberry · 19/11/2024 16:35

Since I just joined it and all the people I chose to follow are either blandly apolitical or mildly 'woke' I think it is probably reacting to my rather foolishly giving it my correct date of birth and it doesn't want old people. Fair enough.

Twitter seems to be settling down again after a brief frisson last week, so plenty to enjoy there.

Faircastle · 19/11/2024 16:40

I joined BlueSky this week.

It was interesting to see what I was shown before I started following people, liking posts and indicating the type of posts I wish too see less of.

To start with there seemed to be a disproportionate amount of:
Comic-style art (anime & solarpunk)
Posts complaining about Trump
Photos of fungi in woodland
Photos / AI landscapes including the moon
Photos / AI images of foxes

w10mum3 · 19/11/2024 16:50

I went over from Twitter and straight away started following some of the people I had followed over there and haven't had any of that.

I'm actually finding it a really pleasant environment, at the moment, anyway, and have found some really interesting follows through the discover tab.
