BlueSky- Is it just me with a “Discover” tab full of anime demi porn?

I joined BlueSky a few days ago to see what all the fuss was about. I’ve only followed a couple of dog charities and haven’t posted at all. When I scroll down the discover tab it pretty much looks like:

Anime demi porn
Anime demi porn
Anime furry porn
Mostly naked/fully naked weightlifting male saying hello/good morning to the world
Post about how welcoming and inclusive BlueSky is and how glad the poster is it exists
Political post
Anime demi porn…

It’s 80% shit I have NO desire to see and I can’t work out why. DH has been on it a while and assures me his discover tab is nothing like mine.

WTF. Is it just me? 🤷‍♀️

I don't use the Discover tab much but have had a look. No anime porn. Various accounts that seem to mostly be ones that people I follow have interacted with.

There's a concept of "Starter Packs" where established users put together a list of people to follow for particular interests. I was thinking we should create a feminism one?

HowardTJMoon · 19/11/2024 17:15

This is mine. They're all posts more-or-less aligned with my interests. I'd recommend finding some feeds that match what you're interested in so you'll see things that suit you.

I can't find anyone I follow on twitter on bluesky.

Seems to be lots of trans identified men, no feminists, and all "left" politics (i.e. lots of women who think men are women).

Its a hell hole.

Have you tried Truth Social? You might be more comfortable there.

No, I prefer twitter.

I like being able to see and debate with people that don't have the same mindset as me. I have had my opinion changed in the past just as often as I have not.

If you never expose yourself to new ideas and question your own views then how do you grow as a person?

It's endlessly fascinating to me that my general views have not changed. If I had to label them I would say I have always hovered around the left of centre. But in the last ten years this has apparently shifted, and I often see my (I believed moderate) views described as 'far right'.

It almost feels like we are moving away from the age of enlightenment and back towards an almost religious puritanical mindset.

Clearinguptheclutter · 20/11/2024 08:35

I think it will take a while to settle down with your likes and dislikes

I’m generally a fan so far but am mostly getting American football. Def no anime porn.

bombastix · 20/11/2024 08:41

No. It seems fine. I’d just delete it and stay on Twitter if you don’t like it.

SomethingFun · 20/11/2024 08:44

I’ve not been on twitter for yonks but it’s always been full of shite I don’t particularly want to engage with because it’s meant to be for everyone and everyone has a lot of views and interests that don’t appeal to me. It was like that before x so I imagine blue sky will be the same way. Also not sure what the perpetually online will complain about if everything they disagree with is blocked 😁

So you like being able to see and debate with people that don't have the same views as you, with the implication that those who've moved to Bluesky are inhabiting some kind of puritanical echo chamber. But you avoid Truth Social where there would also be people that don't have the same views as you.

Why is that? Why can you draw the line at the god-awful cesspool that is Truth Social, but others shouldn't draw the line at the god-awful cesspool that Twitter has become?

RobinEllacotStrike · 20/11/2024 13:21

My X/Twitter isn't a cesspool.

bombastix · 20/11/2024 13:48

But can’t people make their own choices? I think Twitter is designed to make people fight. I don’t use it. BlueSky seems okay. People can choose how they want to interact; as they do in the real world.

I’ve deleted BlueSky. I have no interest in effectively having to “train” an algorithm that no, I don’t want to scroll through piles of anime porn. I might try it again in the future and see if it’s any better, but right now it’s not for me.

Its very simple. Twitter has the most users.

So naturally I'm more likely to come across people with many different opinions. I like a mix.

Those other platforms are much smaller and seem to be suggested as a place where like minded people gather. Probably why it attracts less users, they have their own niche.

If people want don't want to see other opinions, or want to be on a smaller platform then that is up to them.

MollyButton · 20/11/2024 15:52

I've been on there for a while. Pretty inactive, and very different from my Twitter.

Never had any anime or porn or even fake bots telling me how attractive I am.

angelcake20 · 20/11/2024 16:14

I signed up this morning and have only followed one organisation related to my work. No porn or anime in discovery. 80% is in German (I am currently listening to some German music on Amazon Music) and most of the rest is related to an interest of mine so it's presumably taking cues from other usage.

IdylicDay · 24/11/2024 12:18

BlueSky seems to be mainly a haven for incels or for trans and trans activists. With the latter, anime porn seems to go hand in hand with the trans culture. If its not actual porn its the anime culture itself.

Birdscratch · 24/11/2024 12:23

Have you given the algorithm enough input? Like and follow a few people. My discover is full of wildlife photos, beautiful scenery, positivity and anti Trump stuff.

Birdscratch · 24/11/2024 12:24

Sigh.

poormenagain · 25/11/2024 22:30

I tried it out after the US Presidential election because I am so unimpressed by Elon Muck that I would really, really like to see him suffer financial harm - but I also have a bunch of stuff on Twitter from the (wildly misogynist and not in any way OK) "Jack" era, because my then employer required me to tweet. I don't want to delete my account on Twitter because it is in my legal name and I don't want to risk anyone else grabbing it and my tweets being confused with theirs.

The very first tweet I saw on BlueSky was so insanely misogynistic that I backed the fuck out and marked its dance card as HELL THE FUCK NO.

HOWEVER - I went and looked at BlueSky a few more times in the aftermath of the US Presidential election, as a lot of people opposed to Trump/Musk have been recommending it. Even a few supposed US "feminists" recommended it but NO NO NO NO NO - even the specific recommendations from self-proclaimed "feminists" are insanely misogynistic.

BLUESKY IS SUSPECT, MISOGYNISTIC, AND NOT OK.
