What temp is your lounge right now?

I'm going to cave and put the heating on, it's currently 14c in the lounge. We try not to put the heating on if home alone.

I'm wearing an oodie and have a blanket but my head and hands are freezing.

What temp is your lounge?

About 30 atm as the log burner is on and it's ridiculous.
Rest of the house is bloody freezing tho!

Georgyporky · 17/11/2024 19:23

Insulation is the key.
Our house is c.35 years old, so quite modern.
Cavity wall insulation, double-glazed etc.
Loft was only about 1-2 inches, so we doubled that & really noticed the difference.
22 at the mo, heating is controlled by thermostat & was on only for about 1 hour this morning.

Delatron · 17/11/2024 19:25

The damp and mould is going to cost you more than putting the heating on. If you’re not in fuel poverty then keep your house warm. It takes ages to warm up if you start from a colder point.

Purplecatshopaholic · 17/11/2024 19:25

About 22. Heating kicks in at 21. It’s Baltic here just now and my lungs really struggle breathing cold air.

HappiestSleeping · 17/11/2024 19:27

Our heating isn't on yet. The log burner is in the living room, so is influencing the thermostat which is in the hall. Thermostat shows 18.5 degrees.

I'll boost the heating if the temperature in the hall drops to 16.5 degrees and it takes an hour or so to bring the temperature up.

Delatron · 17/11/2024 19:29

We had a humidity problem in one room (despite having the heating on). The windows ended up going mouldy and rotting and we had to spend £2k replacing them. We now run a dehumidifier in that room. I wouldn’t be happy with that level of humidity.

Dunk19 · 17/11/2024 19:30

This has been a wake up call, I'm so glad I posted. We will start heating properly now.

Sooo best to have it on all the time to click on at a certain temp or a few hours am and pm? I am worried about big bills but also worried about mould and health.

I keep it at 20. This thread has been useful. I go away for a month soon and will keep the heating on while away.

ichundich · 17/11/2024 19:31

About 24 with a roaring fire on the stove.

Sheknowsaboutme · 17/11/2024 19:32

No idea!! But bloody hot. Logs burning and I absolutely loathe it.

abracadabra1980 · 17/11/2024 19:34

17.5 I'd usually be shivering to the core in that, but I have had a Dreamland heated throw for a couple infusers now and I haven't even had to put my woodburner on. I'm as toasty as shit - feel the same as if the heating was at my preferred temperature of 22*
We have 6 in our family now as everyone who's tried it janet wanted to move 🤣! It's way better than an Oodie - mine was so big I kept getting the sleeves wet.
Costs a few pence per hour to run.
I've paid from £130 for one bit they are often on offer for a lot less. Boots often have them on sale.

We have ours set to come on at certain times am and evening but not to drop below a certain temp (quite low just to prevent pipes freezing) and we have it off over night.

Then we can boost certain rooms when we need to as we have a Hive system. Seems to work well for us.

unmemorableusername · 17/11/2024 19:37

I wouldnt take my coat off it was 14, I'd go to bed

buffyspikefaithangel · 17/11/2024 19:42

16c, I'm comfortable with that

RavenT · 17/11/2024 19:52

18 here. I put it up to 18.5 earlier but it felt too warm, 18 is the most comfortable for me.
In winter I set the thermostat to a constant 17 during the day to keep the temperature steady.

SalsaLights · 17/11/2024 19:55

Is your boiler working properly? Have you bled the rads recently? It shouldn't take two hours to go from 14 to 16 degrees unless the house has been totally unheated for a while (longer than a day).

I heat to 18, any more than that and I feel too warm.

ByMerryKoala · 17/11/2024 19:59

in Japan, they take the same approach, they use a heated seat called a Kotasu rather than heat the house. Winter temperatures in Japan average -4c

What's the humidity like in winter there? Heat the person not your home makes more sense if it doesn't leave the property vulnerable to mould and its deleterious effect on the fabric of your home and the people in it.

Goldenphoenix · 17/11/2024 20:02

Our thermostat is always set to 17.5. I don't like a hot house. We have got heated throws though and absolutely love those. One on the sofa along with loads of other blankets and everyone has a heated blanket in bedrooms. We have heated under blankets too. So we are locally very cosy but the house isn't too roasting. Touch wood we don't have any damp problems so hopefully house is heated enough to not suffer from it.

GiveMeAbitOfSugar · 17/11/2024 20:06

About 19 i think
The heating has been on 4 hours

Partner has layers on and is still cold
long sleeve top , thin jumper, hoody, super thick dressing gown. Winter hat on and dressing gown hood up

His not normal

CalicoPusscat · 17/11/2024 20:06

Just downloaded a thermometer app 25° apparently 😮

That can't be right, although I did have the heating on for half hour. It's now off so I'll check again in a bit

Riddledwithguilt · 17/11/2024 20:09

House is an average of 22c ... the sitting room is currently about 35c as I appear to have put too many logs on the log burner ... ☺️

nannyl · 17/11/2024 20:11

boiling downstairs with the aga and wood burning stove making it so very cosy.

Upstairs is currently 15.9 (but is set to be at 17.5 and it hasnt warmed up that much yet... hopefully it will by 9pm when the thermostat drops back to 14.5 for the night....
(our thermostat is upstairs so regulates the temperature of the bedrooms)

Dunk19 · 17/11/2024 20:17

Still only at 16c. Radiators are all very hot to touch.

21° now, that's more accurate. I am struggling through the aftermath of a disease where my weight dropped below 7st so probably feel the cold more keenly than the average person. I don't have much insulation on my body.

I'll put a couple of hot water bottles on and unfortunately I put all the bedding through the wash today but it may have dried out by now.

With your humidity at 76? it will take ages, because you're heating the water as well as the air. Ideally you want about 40/60 tops %. You may have damp walls in the fabric of the building which will take longer to watm up. I live in a single skin Edwardian townhouse - when we moved in, in January 2019 the house had been empty for 7 months - it took a week of continuos heating to dry out the rooms, all good now though. We're at 50% and 20c here.
