What temp is your lounge right now?

I'm going to cave and put the heating on, it's currently 14c in the lounge. We try not to put the heating on if home alone.

I'm wearing an oodie and have a blanket but my head and hands are freezing.

What temp is your lounge?

18.5, but the back door’s open. I’ll close it when we get cold.

Heating is now on, it rarely goes above 18c though. We have new double glazing and cavity wall insulation, it's just a very cold house but great in a heat wave!

why? And why do you have this rule of not heating the house for one person. Is it heat poverty? I see you’ve new double glazing, so this indicates funds available so I’m struggling to understand why you’re living like this, is it a financial must ?and is there kids who live there or just you and your husband?

heating our homes is so important, to avoid condensation damp, health issues, respiratory issues which come from breathing in the cold air. The fabric of our buildings get damaged if damp gets in.

can you afford to heat one room properly if it is heat poverty?

sauvignonplonk1 · 17/11/2024 17:13

23.2 - wood burner making it nice and toasty. Can't stand being cold.

Onlyvisiting · 17/11/2024 17:15

13.7 c!
But I have been gardening outdoors with the door open for the dogs. Don't have central heating but have shut everything up, put the oven on and might plug a radiator in for a bit until it's around 17c..

midgetastic · 17/11/2024 16:39

Living room is 20 , rest of house is cooler
Excellent insulation of a new build means this is cheap to run, and my asthma benefits from the lack of chill in the air I breath in

Heating is on now - automatic below 19 ( the way the house is zoned means 19 at the thermostat is 20 in the living room and 18 to 19 elsewhere

That's interesting. I'm asthmatic and I HATE being too warm. My asthma is a million times worse in the winter when all the central heating is on everywhere.

In addition I'm constantly dusting radiators as the heat makes the dust active.

Though am also in peri for the last few years and hate heat in general. Until I'm too cold!

I just went upstairs which is the only place with a thermostat and it was 15 so I put the heating on for the children's bedrooms. But keeping it off in ours or I won't be able to sleep.

Delatron · 17/11/2024 17:18

14 sounds utterly miserable. It’s such a shame that people have to suffer so much in this country due to fuel costs. This doesn’t happen elsewhere- especially colder countries - they heat their houses properly.

Think we’re around 18 but it’s heating to 20 now. I haven’t been sat still so that’s ok for me. I’m menopausal so sleep with a window open and no heating on at night. But will not be cold in the day. If I have a jumper on and I’m still cold then the heating goes on.

20.1.

14 degrees would trigger my asthma. I rented a house for a year when moving a long way to allow me to workout where I wanted to live. It was an old, cold house. I ended up with pneumonia twice that year.

Not good for you a temperature that low.

daffodilandtulip · 17/11/2024 17:19

Fucking freezing. I should have had a log delivery last week but the council didn't pay my invoice on time so i had to cancel it as I've only got about 45p. I'm not averse to using the heating but it's old and doesn't touch it when you're used to a burner!

DelilahBucket · 17/11/2024 17:20

19.5 and currently heating to 20. Normally have it at 18-18.5 but I've been out all afternoon in the freezing cold and rain and I can't get warm so it's been turned up.

CollisionCourse · 17/11/2024 17:22

14 would have me miserable and ranting. Can you afford to turn it up a bit?
Old thermostat here (must get round to replacing) in the hallway set to 17ish. It's prob 17-18 in the living room at the moment, we've been in and out all day, comfortable in a t-shirt and hoody even though I'm a chilly soul, and I'm about to run the oven so I don't feel the need to put it up more today.

Oldraver · 17/11/2024 17:22

Not sure as I haven't been in there today, but the hall thermostat is showing as 19.7, with a target of 20 degrees

14 9s what I set the hive to when I DONT want it to come on

Kwiaenrker · 17/11/2024 17:23
  1. No heating..we recently upgraded the insulation
Decafflatteplease · 17/11/2024 17:25

14.9 degrees in our lounge. 15 in bedrooms. All in oodies etc. the joys of a period house 🙄 we already pay over £200 a month and just can't afford to have it on much more as we need to get credit back in the spring.

We have it on for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening at the moment

TiggeryBear · 17/11/2024 17:26

14 here. I've popped it on now. We usually sit around 16-18 though. I'd rather we wore warm clothes - minimum of socks & jumper - I'm not expecting the children to sit wrapped in duvets all day! But I'm not heating it so they can sit in vest & pants & complain they're hot! There's a happy medium.

BoobyDazzler · 17/11/2024 17:26

14° is miserably cold. We’ve on our way home and tuned the heating on remotely to 19° so it should be reasonably warm when we get in although it’s an older house and takes a long time to warm up.

We’ve got an electric over blanket that we use most days at this time of year. It costs peanuts to run.

Ollybob · 17/11/2024 17:28

It was 16 but I put the heating on an hour ago ish and it's now 18, given the choice I'd pop the heating up to 22 , I hate being cold and need to wash my hair 😕 but I'm afraid it'll cost too much.
Also hoping downstairs puts their heating on too as heat rises 😂

OllysArmyRidesAgain · 17/11/2024 17:28

Checked at 5pm and it was 18 so I have closed the curtains and set the thermostat to 20, I fancy a quiet night in front of the TV as it’s just me home tonight so I’m going to have some heat.

18 is fine for me if I am in bed or doing chores/active stuff but not for being lazy, I work from home and only heat my office during daylight hours or the whole house if it drops to 16 on the thermostat, if the house goes colder it takes forever to warm up again.

Just watching the weather for the week ahead it looks like it is getting colder

DancingNotDrowning · 17/11/2024 17:30

Old house 20.6 - we’ve been out all day and it’ll click off at 21°

I hate being cold absolutely couldn’t cope with 14°

2025Z · 17/11/2024 17:32

bryceQ · 17/11/2024 16:36

Never drops below 20. I would be miserable at 14

Same! Mine is 20.5 right now

hangingonfordearlife1 · 17/11/2024 17:34

24 - i live abroad. no heating on

Robotcustard · 17/11/2024 17:34

21.5, it’s a small new build mid terrace. Also have the heated airer on in the kitchen and cooking dinner. I feel your pain though as our house previous to this was an old uninsulated open plan cottage, but was much more spacious!

doneandone · 17/11/2024 17:35

Just got home after a day out, it's on 15.5, it's set to come on at 15. Just had to put it on though and make a fire as we've been outside all day and I'm cold to the bone. Dreading the cold of winter as our house is also a very cold house (late 1800s and no cavity for wall insulation)

Meadowfinch · 17/11/2024 17:36

16 degrees. I'll light the log burner in a minute.

SoulMole · 17/11/2024 17:37

We hit 14⁰ today too. Cold house.
