What temp is your lounge right now?

I'm going to cave and put the heating on, it's currently 14c in the lounge. We try not to put the heating on if home alone.

I'm wearing an oodie and have a blanket but my head and hands are freezing.

Heating is now on, it rarely goes above 18c though. We have new double glazing and cavity wall insulation, it's just a very cold house but great in a heat wave!

What about the loft ?

Livedandlearned · 17/11/2024 17:49

Constantly 19°. We've just had a heat pump installed and it's so nice to have the house a continuous comfortable heat.

We used to live in an old stone cottage and 14° was my normal, it's pretty miserable.

I can't go above 19° or I start feeling uncomfortable, I'm not used to the heat and I wouldn't be able to sleep.

Gamerlady · 17/11/2024 17:51

House is 12 degrees. I don't use the heating until December, and sparingly as just can't afford it.

ClicketyClickPlusOne · 17/11/2024 17:53

16’

I’m ok atm, will put the heating on for a couple of hours this eve to take it to 18’

TheRutshireWI · 17/11/2024 17:54

19° still no heating, back doors been open a lot today. Next door heat their house like a sauna and we benefit.

I will cave and put the heating on if it dips below 18° but hasn't so far.

If it's any consolation, I know what you are going through. I spent my childhood growing up in a tudor house in the country where you could see your breath in every room. The house was essentially made of wood and mud and the wind seemed to blow through every crack, the curtains constantly moved in the drafts. There was no insulation and the windows were leaded which let in even more drafts.

We wrapped up, thermal underwear, 2 x heavy pairs of trousers, 2 pairs of woollen walking socks, 2 shirts, 2 jumpers, a coat with a hood and mittens. That was what we wore indoors. It would have been impossible to heat the house so we heated the sofas instead, We would sit on the sofas under blankets which contained an electric blanket running on a low setting, they are very economical 100W per hour at this setting costing about 3p per hour at todays electricity prices. I can never recall any mould growing in the house, I guess it was because the house was incredibly ventilated with drafts.

in Japan, they take the same approach, they use a heated seat called a Kotasu rather than heat the house. Winter temperatures in Japan average -4c.

thatsawhopperthatlemon · 17/11/2024 18:02

Ours is currently 20. We are all open plan downstairs though, so if we need to open the back door to let one of the cats in or out, then the temperature will drop quite quickly in a very short space of time especially if DH stands there with the door open for ages while the cat makes its mind up. I might put it up to 21 later, but then it will be set at 19 overnight and all day tomorrow while we are at work.

Ilovemyshed · 17/11/2024 18:03

22 ish, heating was on for an hour or so about 2 hours ago. Rest of the house is much the same.

18C right now. Had the heating on twice today - for half hour each time. Clicked in at 16-17C. Highest temperature outside has been 10C today. (North Midlands.)

muddyford · 17/11/2024 18:09

19C. If it were just me it would be a few degrees lower but DH is frail and needs a bit more warmth.

foxandbee · 17/11/2024 18:10

18-20 depending on which room. 14 is very low and miserable.

Had a new boiler recently and the difference is amazing. House is so much warmer and now so much cheaper to get it that way. Previous boiler was over 30 years old.

Frith2013 · 17/11/2024 18:10
  1. Haven't had the heating on this autumn yet, apart from the occasional 10 minutes to make sure the washing is dry.

Just cannot afford it.

GonnaBeASuperSaver · 17/11/2024 18:12

Never under 18. I don't fancy damp issues.
Old house too which takes forever to heat even to 20

That's awful. You must be freezing. Do you have any heated blankets? I used them when the fuel prices were really high and they were great.

I'm ok at the moment but after dinner I have a single duvet and hot water bottle on the sofa.

I didn't have central heating until I moved to this house last year so grew up with ice on the windows in the bedrooms!

Dunk19 · 17/11/2024 18:21

We've crept up to 15 now.

It's not so much fuel poverty but I have it ingrained in me to be careful, I think we're probably being too careful than we need to be now though. There is a bit of mould we have to keep on top of in the spare room.

I have a teen ds who lives in just shorts whatever the temp. DH has health issues but always seems hot.

Loft insulation was done about 20 years ago, perhaps needs redoing.

20 degrees in my house. Was brought up in a house with no central heating and remember how cold it was. For me one of the worse things is sitting in a cold house. It's miserable and life's too short. I would rather cut back on other stuff and be warm and toasty.

Dunk19 · 17/11/2024 18:23

2 hours to get to 16c. Does it take others that long and is the humidity normal?

That humidity is very high.

NewGreenDuck · 17/11/2024 18:35

Mines has been on 20c all day. It's kicking in again now as it's dark but has been off and on all day. I think there must be something wrong with your boiler if it's not heating up after 2 hours.

Dunk19 · 17/11/2024 18:39

The boiler is only 3 years old and was recently serviced, it's just always been a very cold house. I don't remember it ever getting very warm tbh.

That humidity is very high, have you got wet washing in the house?

Dunk19 · 17/11/2024 18:41

@2dogsandabudgie no not at the moment. When we do it's on an airer with a dehumidifier in the room

OP posts:
NewGreenDuck · 17/11/2024 18:42

Is the boiler powerful enough though? If it's not the correct one for the size of the house, it will struggle to heat it efficiently

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 17/11/2024 18:42

Usually around 21- house feels freezing at 19
