Old-fashioned foods which should make a comeback

I am just making a cheese and potato pie for lunch, which I last ate circa 1988. It's basically mashed potatoes mixed with an egg and a fuck load of cheese, more cheese on top and then baked in the oven. Bloody lovely, relatively cheap and filling.

Which other old-fashioned foods do you make /have you made recently which you think should make a comeback?

I remember my mum doing a homemade version of those showboat cakes, based on a similar fresh cream cake from a Scottish bakery in the 70s. I think it must have been a faff, sure, but less trouble (and far tastier) than reproducing my dad's favourite wince-makingly sweet fruit and cream tarts smothered in thick soft icing.

Didn't they make a Golden Syrup cake too?

yes, you can still get it under the lyles brand now ,still delicious but smaller

Something which seems to have fallen out of favour is the baked milk pudding using semolina, tapioca and sago.

We used to have semolina at school with dried fruit scattered on the top.

I've had semolina more recently when I've been in Germany/Austria, where it's still popular.

On a cold day like today, I'd love a bowl of semolina.

I like semolina but I just make it on the stove top and I have it with jam. DH likes tinned fruit with his, neither of us like it baked in the oven

I really like Audrey’s chocolates. They are based on Hove near Brighton.

They do Rose and Violet dark chocolates

I think they used to supply Fortnum & Masons

Rose & Violet Creams

A selection of our unique rose and violet creams - choose from two sizes 100g and 280g box - a perfect gift for everyone. The picture shows a 280g box.

I am very interested to try the Lidl/Aldi variant for research purposes!

Loving the food nostalgia on here!

DrUptonsGardenGnome · 23/03/2025 15:55

Not a food but hot possets with a dash of port are a fantastic nightcap.

The DC asked for a hot posset after seeing Kay have one in The Box of Delights and now I am frequently asked to make them - non-alcoholic for them, with port for me.

Those little frozen mousse desserts that you had to defrost. Also that bright orange juice that mixed from granules with water.

i’ve had packet semolina fairly recently and saw blancmange mix the other day.

if anyone is looking for the beat treacle tart and are near Derbyshire, the Chatsworth farm shop sells it by the (large) slice, its a mere 800 calories though 😂

You can still get those mousse in Iceland!

Blancmange. Cannot find it in the shops anywhere.

I make a chocolate one now and then - dead easy!

8misskitty8 · 24/03/2025 06:59

Those frozen mousse were amazing. I loved the chocolate and mint ones.
The granules that you add to water was Cremola foam.

Suchasonganddance · 24/03/2025 07:02

My mother used to call that a milk jelly. She was always looking for ways to “get more milk down you”, and ruined many a perfectly good jelly/artificially coloured chemical mix in the process - in our opinion!

Deathraystare · 24/03/2025 08:54

Glad to see in You magazine (yes, the Daily Fail!) in Kim Wilde's interview about food she also loves the chocolate rose and violet cremes!

Treaclewell · 24/03/2025 09:41

I only 'had' sago and tapioca at school. and avoided them. Most of us did after referring to it as frogspawn.
I have a stash of Pearce Duff's blancmange powders, having bought some when I thought I saw which way the wind was blowing, but not necessary, since they have been taken over by Greens and kept available, unlike Symingtons Table Creams bought out by Dr Oetker and dropped. I liked Maple and Walnut.

Crikeyalmighty · 24/03/2025 18:43

@Ilovemyshed wasn’t that juice called ‘apeel’ or something like that- I used to like it too

Treacle tart. The base is pastry, and for some you put cornflakes on the top.

My DM used to fill the pastry case with breadcrumbs and golden syrup. It was lush! I last had it probably 50 years ago!

Dm used to make it with a mix of treacle (very little) and golden syrup and add crushed Weetabix to it. With cream it was definitely the best treacle tart ever.

My memories of food from the 60's and 70's are probably best left there - stuffed lamb's hearts, anyone? Or the dreaded baked apples - hollowed out, and with currants in the middle. I never want to see another one of those in my lifetime!

This thread has reminded me of cornflake tart. DH has fond childhood memories of that, so I might look up a recipe.

I love stuffed lamb heart

Fitzbillies in Cambridge do Chelsea buns you can order. I tried one but it was too sweet for my liking. They’re pretty famous though.

not to mention expensive 😂
