NHS backed pay rise

Just wondered if anyone has received their backdated NHS pay rise in their October pay. If so, how bad were all the deductions? We are getting ours in November pay, I was hoping it'd help for Xmas but it looks like with pension, student loan, tax and NI increase I'll be very disappointed.

I'm part time (23 hours) band 5 and I received £500, works out an extra £66 per month.

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 15/11/2024 21:47

I got mine in my October pay. No student loan to come off mine (finished paying a couple of years ago) and it didn't put me into a higher pension or tax band, so although the deductions were high, I still got a decent amount.

mummabubs · 15/11/2024 21:50

We were told we were getting it in our November pay. Then got an email yesterday saying now it's January.

Oh no! Are you in wales?

bungletru · 15/11/2024 22:00

Top of a b7.
deductions made it feel like it was hardly an uplift!!

Teaandcake221 · 15/11/2024 22:05

Ah fixed responses then. I also increased my hours 2 months ago, so now paying back my student loan. To be honest when I went from 15 to 20 hours I got more than i get working and extra 7.5 hours!
Im preparing myself for disappointment.

@mummabubs oh no! That's awful if you've been expecting it before Xmas. Where do you live? I'm in Wales.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 15/11/2024 22:10

I’m in Wales and am expecting it next week. I never get my hopes up. These back pays are always less than I hope they’ll be!

Aprettydressorasexydress · 15/11/2024 22:12

How have the 8a's fared this time round? Usually the deductions override the uplift, has that happened again?

Teaandcake221 · 15/11/2024 22:14

@Aprettydressorasexydress that's awful! I'm only a band 5 (top of my pay scale but part time) but how depressing to get months of backdated pay rise and have deductions override the lift!

Received mine in October’s pay. Any additional money is nice but it was less than expected. Probably had miscalculated!

MessyNeate · 15/11/2024 22:23

I'm in wales too and 30 hours but during the backdated pay period I did a lot of specialist enhanced overtime so hoping for a decent amount!

Teaandcake221 · 15/11/2024 22:31

@MessyNeate fingers crossed for you, hopefully it wont get eaten by tax etc!

WhatMe123 · 15/11/2024 22:55

We got ours in October, tax was high but I still walked away with a decent sum to say I'm part time

Teaandcake221 · 15/11/2024 23:30

I'm trying to work it out to get some idea of what I'll get but I'm clueless as to how this all works!

OP posts:
dollybird · 15/11/2024 23:37

Received mine in October. Top of band 6, and went into the higher NI band, so saved a bit on that. No student loan. Pension contributions are the same % so no higher than expected. I was about £800 up on previous month.

Can I ask whereabouts in the UK you work? Expecting ours in November pay and worried it’s delayed now.

Teaandcake221 · 15/11/2024 23:55

Can I ask a really stupid question... I was reading some info regarding the backdated pay and some said they ended up paying pension arrears...how does this actually work?

Last month I got my first pay my working an extra 7.5 hour and paid back some pension arrears. I've no idea why.

Also I've increased by hours by 7.5 a month and I'm paying nearly 3x as much tax.
So working 20 hours I paid £89 tax and working 27.5 hours my tax was £239 a month!

I'm honestly questioning if it's worth doing an extra 7.5 hours a week if my tax has trippled! Plus I'm now paying student loan. It's hardly worth it.

We had some comms round about the new pay point, and that will come through in January. So we will get a chunk of backdated pay next week for the 5.5% then another chunk in Jan for the additional pay point ( if you meet it. I'm v. Happy! It's about an extra 5k a year so a noticeable increase!

Fully expecting to get hammered on tax/ pension/ student load etc but it should still be a nice amount!

Yes I am! Communication of this in our health board hadn't been great as it's not trickled down to all. For a lot of us we were really banking on having it pre-christmas so to get 2 weeks notice that it's being delayed by 2 months isn't great.

DilemmaDelilah · 16/11/2024 08:53

@Teaandcake221 I'm nearly the same at @Verbena193 in that I'm top of B5 and work 22.5 hours. I got around £500. Depending on how many hours you work and whether you have any out-of-pay deductions (additional pension payments, nursery fees, lease car etc.) I imagine you will get around the same.

Skipsurvey · 16/11/2024 08:56

was less than i expected
not really looked into it though but i got my hopes up and they were dashed
about £400

Don't look at the deductions you'll drive yourself crazy!

Before you were earning so little you were close to the tax-free allowance. Now you are earning a better wage you pay more tax.

If you want to earn more money, you have to pay tax!

Whether it's worth it is up to you. For most of us it is. I found being very part time difficult, and never really felt part of the team. I work similar hours to you now and find it is a good work life balance.

Holymotherforkingshirtballs · 16/11/2024 09:08

Deductions were high, we could see how much we were getting before deductions and it was around £850. Had hoped to get about £600 of it, ended up with about £430.
