NHS backed pay rise

Teaandcake221 · 15/11/2024 21:45

Just wondered if anyone has received their backdated NHS pay rise in their October pay. If so, how bad were all the deductions? We are getting ours in November pay, I was hoping it'd help for Xmas but it looks like with pension, student loan, tax and NI increase I'll be very disappointed.

Top of band 5 and I got around 700-800 extra. There was a fair for specialist enhanced overtime backdated in the though

MessyNeate · 18/11/2024 20:34

@mummabubs I'm the same health board and mines in this pay!

fussygalore118 · 19/11/2024 02:23

Just seen my payslip, I'm band 8a, no enhanced hours/ weekends etc , I'm full time. I've had an extra £1,100 after deductions which is a bit more than expected.

Pension arrears were only a couple of hundred, I'm only on 9.8% though ( I have a fleet car that keeps my pension down a little) student loan only £100 more than usual as well.. tax a fair bit more but not unexpected.

Anyhow I'm chuffed! And looking forward to my Jan black pay as well for the added pay step!!

My back pay was £800 and I have received £374 of that after deductions .

over £300 has gone in pension arrears. I usually pay 6.5% into my pension, this month is 8.3% then the arrears on top of that. With the extra PAYE and NI payments I’m very disappointed at how little actually reaches my bank account!

0.6 wte Band 6 btw.

It's a killer when you move up the pensions contributions percent!

I look at my pension statement when I feel too sad about it!!! 🙈 It's a small comfort!

How have the 8a's fared this time round? Usually the deductions override the uplift, has that happened again?

DS2 is 8a.
Got his last month and the deductions were eye watering. Student loan is a pain because at least with tax it will even out over the rest of the year but SL doesn't work that way. The new increment will make a difference.

At least they changed the pension contribution bandings to apply to actual salary level rather than the full time amount. Previously this OP would've paid 9.8% as the FT salary is in that bracket (I pay 9.8% as a b6 on 0.91 wte).

Muchtoomuchtodo · 20/11/2024 21:59

So will my pension contribution stay at 8.3% then?

Teaandcake221 · 21/11/2024 11:31

Just checked my payslip. Depressing. Out of the extra £646, £265 was pension arrears! So with all the extra tax, loan, etc...out of £646 I got £260.

I have had the same as you it seems (in terms of pension arrears). Although less pay as I'm top of Band 5. Gutted.

In the new tax year you can request a refund from student finance if you paid too much loan. It's not worth doing if you are likely to pay it off but it's handy if you aren't, I paid back £800 last year but the interest added was £1200 so I always claim my refund.

Teaandcake221 · 21/11/2024 11:47

I was preparing for disappointment but hoped for around £400. My tax trippled, pension payment more than doubled and my pension arrears are high...
Actually though... I wonder if they made a mistake. I'm now in the 8.3% pension pay bracket but last month it was in the lower bracket. I assume they've not calculated all my arrears at 8.3%. I'm not even sure how I'd work it out to be honest!

Only works if your total annual income is below the threshold. DS1 got it a few years ago but DS2 was refused for the above reason.

Teaandcake221 · 21/11/2024 16:52

Well I've spoken to colleagues who are all band 5. They had around £50 deducted in pension arrears. So no idea why they deducted so much from me!

I was top 8a for the back pay. 36 hours. Got about £400

PrioritisePleasure24 · 21/11/2024 17:50

I thought with each pay rise/uplift that they were going to adjust the pension bands accordingly so we don’t actually end up worse off as that’s what’s happening every single year when we finally get some money

It doesn’t seem to have happened though. i’m a top band 4 full time and with weekend pay i won’t be that far off the next pension bracket of 9.3 which is ridiculous on £29,000.

teebles64 · 21/11/2024 17:55

My DD got hers today. Wiped out all of her childcare UC and put her in the next tax bracket. Ended up £10 worse off than usual.

If your new annual salary is in the 8.3% bracket, yes.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 22/11/2024 17:57

Thanks @dollybird. Looks like it does.

I hadn’t banked on that!

TeenLifeMum · 22/11/2024 17:58

bungletru · 15/11/2024 22:00

Top of a b7.
deductions made it feel like it was hardly an uplift!!

what did they deduct?! I’m top of b7 and took home an extra £1,000. I definitely noticed it.

Usually you can ask to receive the uplift over a few months so it doesn’t impact UC. Too late now but one for next year.

newyearsresolurion · 22/11/2024 18:07

I work part time got £600

Lemonade2011 · 22/11/2024 18:11

after Tax etc i got 350, I wish they’d just pay it from this month the back pay seems hardly worth it for the faff with pension, tax etc it’ll affect my uc for next month now too so I’ll need to budget for that. Fun times, then you don’t really even know how much the 5.5% is each month really. I can’t be bothered working it out.

Scrambledchickens · 22/11/2024 18:59

I just looked at my HMRC app and I am getting 450 extra. Top band 6 18.5 hours

No way! That's our money that's due to us. Need to get the pay rise agreed MUCH earlier to hopefully not affect UC. The tax and pension arrears would be the same amount if it started being paid earlier. It just feels worse as it feels like a big proportion of a larger amount. The benefit of a later payment (for me, anyway) was paying less NI.
