Words you won't tolerate from 'friends'

Inspired by the thread that is currently running about a teacher who used a derogatory word about SEN children to her friend, I'm just wondering what language or words if used by a friend would cause you to end a friendship?

I've been in a similar position to the other poster regarding use of the r word (I have a severly disabled child). So, what language pushes your buttons and would you accept any language if used in a joke?

Yep, I was quite unreasonably pleased to see a pack of Brain's Faggots in the grocery shop's freezer 😂 Words getting unfairly stigmatised winds me up even more than people insisting on using 'banned words'.

Also see: Americans being horrified by the British uses of 'fag'!

Context is everything of course, they are faggots - nothing offensive about that at all. Same as “retard” is completely acceptable when discussing ignition timing or aviation throttle settings.

My friends can say anything they like without offending me. Different story if one decided to play speech police though.

I come from a northern mill town and have had to tell my elderly relatives several times that the P word is not to be used in my home, and the next time either of them do use it they’ll be bounced out of the house so quickly their feet will not touch the ground.

My MIL has used this as well. Northern mill town here as well. I spat my coffee out!

Pronouns

Absolutely nothing. I don't police what others say and set my own standards. I also don't virtue signal.

"My friends can say anything they like without offending me"

So can mine, but I choose my friends carefully.

If any of them were to ever share racist, homophobic or misogynistic opinions or say anything else I find offensive, they would very smartly become ex-friends.

Tangobag · 11/11/2024 15:47

Any slur really. Anti trans nonsense. Life is much nicer without hateful people in it

StormingNorman · 11/11/2024 15:54

I’m not being racist but…

FFS it’s not about policing what people say is it? It’s about the language they use giving an insight into the kind of person they are.

Are there people who would remain friends with somebody who used the n word? Or mong? Or retard? Because freedom of speech? Bloody hell.....

Ricky Gervais seems to be very popular.

I didn't say he was, my point is that he uses very offensive language and is a popular comedian. So it seems as though yes, there are people who don't mind such language.

Karen, unless referring to a named individual.

Totally agree.

Freethebees · 11/11/2024 19:45

Fudge packer, uphill gardener, shirt lifter.

CowboyJoanna · 11/11/2024 19:54

I dont give a flying monkeys about political correctness and sometimes my friends might use words that are a bit anti-PC. But I'm not going to get my knickers in a twist over words. I live in a very rough and ready area, with an Aussie husband (as we all know they're "take me as you find me" down under). So if I cut ties over some words I'd be a very lonely person Grin
I just don't tolerate swearing or rude words from my kids.

But words I won't tolerate from people are "transphobic" or "Karen".

The n word, anything racist/anti-Semitic, or spastic/retard or anything that makes fun of a disability. None are remotely funny and I can’t imagine why any of my friends would think it was.

Totally agree. Also I'd add "Sis" to that list.

NoCarbsForMe · 11/11/2024 19:59

Cis! Even.

You’re assuming everyone is in the UK…

Snorlaxo · 11/11/2024 20:07

If you live in the UK, p*ki is a slur. It’s never ok to say it and saying that the p family are lovely still makes it unacceptable.

Would you honestly defend someone who used words like cunt, slapper, whore, n*gger in the sentence “the X is lovely” ?

Catsmere · 11/11/2024 20:08

I see the usual censorship is active ... @CowboyJoanna I agree with you.

Clawdy · 11/11/2024 20:11

Definitely if someone used the "n" word or the "P" word, I would see them as no longer friends. They would know they were being offensive, surely.

FloralMoon · 11/11/2024 20:18

I could never be friends or even friendly with someone who used racist or homophobic language.

When my hubby and I were wedding planning, the caterer we had booked made a joke that we thought we must have misunderstood - and then a few minutes later made another comment which was unmistakably racist. We cancelled that booking pronto.

I also find it painful when women use nasty female based language about other women like bitch or slut. I actually spoke to someone in my family about this recently who’d made a comment about ‘not being able to stand’ a female tv presenter because she had ‘such an annoying face’. The family member actually took on board what I’d said and apparently gave it a lot of thought and has had a bit of a shift in perspective about the way women should lift other women up, and saw how ridiculous and awful it was to say that don’t like someone because of their face!! It’s just her face!

Ohhh but some one didn't tolerate you because it looks like you were rude to me and it got deleted 😂.
Or were you just a racist?
Let me know!
