How many families do you know that have been to Lapland?

I think it’s got more popular over the years.

No families with kids that I know of.

However dh and I went to Swedish Lapland 5 years ago for our 25th wedding anniversary, to the IceHotel in Jukkasjarvi, near Kiruna. It was amazing, we ate amazing food, drank hideously expensive wine, went dog sledding and visited a reindeer sanctuary. We had 2 nights in a warm room and our final night we were in an ice room.

I'd highly recommend it, for adults.

ImADeadGirlWalking · 11/11/2024 00:03

I know 3 families.
1 did a day trip! Crazy but they had a great time.
1 did a TUI 4 night trip.
1 did a 3 night Canterbury travel trip.

I've also taken my kids for a few nights a few years ago. We did 3 nights/4 days in 2019. Think it cost about £6k for 5 of us. Would probably be double that now.

Whatdoyoumeanwinter · 11/11/2024 00:29

What age is too old do you think?

4 that I can think of off the top of my head but probably more.
In all honesty I can't justify the price for 3 days of being freezing.
We have a pretty amazing Santa locally so we just see him.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 11/11/2024 00:42

One. They have been twice.

Saschka · 11/11/2024 00:48

I know a couple of families who have done the day trip to Santa’s village - both times with preschoolers. sounded like hell on earth (due to the travelling, not the village itself).

I would really really like to go skiing in Lapland. Probably around Easter when if isn’t permanently dark. I suspect that isn’t quite what you mean though.

Garlicpest · 11/11/2024 00:50

One, but not for Christmas. They went for the climate & scenery, did dog sledding and ski trekking, etc. They loved it; I wouldn't!

I think the Christmas fandango is overpriced bullshit but, if you enjoy spending a fortune to actualise the lies you tell your kids, why not 🤷🏻‍♀️

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 11/11/2024 00:55

Apart from ourselves, I am unaware of any of dd's friends / class mates in Primary School or Secondary School that went to Lapland.

I am aware of two that have/had holiday homes in Florida.

So I guess it's about choice.

FatOaf · 11/11/2024 00:57

How many families do you know that have been to Lapland?

One. A family that has at least two very expensive holidays abroad every year.

Gingerisgoodforyou · 11/11/2024 01:01

4 families I know of who've done the santa trip - all said it was great.

We did skiing twice in lapland pre kids and it was amazing. Don't think the santa stuff is worth it but each to their own.

Ozgirl75 · 11/11/2024 07:58

I know one, they took their boys when they were 4 or 5. At the time they had an amazing time, really loved it.
However, fast forward 4 or 5 years and one son came home asking “mum, is Santa real?”
She didn’t want him to be the laughing stock at older primary so gently told him no, and he was utterly incredulous and asked “then WHO was that STRANGER whose lap I sat on and asked for Lego??????” “Why did you take us all the way to LAPLAND for nothing but a LIE”

He is a dramatic child and also autistic but she said that it kind of kept the lie going for probably longer than it should have because she felt like they had over committed to the idea of Santa.

fourelementary · 11/11/2024 07:59

Two

susiedaisy1912 · 11/11/2024 08:00

Two and they both loved it.

BeatriceAndLottie · 11/11/2024 08:06

Only one. Can’t say that I’m envious if I’m honest. It all seems like such a waste, depressingly commercialised - if you’re going to travel then do it properly!

Doggymummar · 11/11/2024 08:07

I was married at kakskautten Igloo Village and know lots of families that came to the wedding,

pooballs · 11/11/2024 08:13

Nobody in real life
See lots of families on Instagram going, also lots of tips of doing it without a package so cheaper
it looks magical and I’d love to do it once but we couldn’t afford to without cutting out our summer holiday and other trips/weekends away.

DaylightTreachery · 11/11/2024 08:14

Whatdoyoumeanwinter · 10/11/2024 18:19

going by these comments if your child doesn’t go, they’ll be singled out in school for not going to see Santa in Lapland

I really doubt that.

The only person I know who has been to Lapland is Finnish and has family in Kemi. I don’t know anyone who’s been to the ‘Santa village’. I also don’t know anyone who does Elf on the Shelf or ‘Christmas Eve hampers’, which from reading Mn you would think are as compulsory as death and taxes.

OolongTeaDrinker · 11/11/2024 08:27

I know quite a few people who have been to Lapland UK, but no-one who has been to actual Lapland..

Joycedelight · 11/11/2024 08:28

I've been to Lapland but I don't think I know of anyone else that's been

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 11/11/2024 08:51

1 with dc similar ages to mine (now teens).
1 with dc now in their 20s

It's always seemed an expense I could do without!

jay55 · 11/11/2024 09:00

One. They're pretty boujie and do lots of fancy outings, holidays to Barbados etc.
Most my friends do a local farm and shopping centre.

Topseyt123 · 11/11/2024 12:56

Three families. Mine, my sister's and some friends of ours, all in different years. All happened to go to the same resort too, flying to Ivalo and staying 3 or 4 nights (can't remember which, it was a long time ago) at the Club Saariselka, if I have spelt that right. 🤣

My children are now 21 & 15 - I only know one family- only the Mum and eldest son travelled as the younger 2 would have been to young and expensive for the whole family - they enjoyed it. But never took the younger ones as they felt that it wasn’t worth it.
Same with the Lapland UK - families go once but not an every year return!
