How many families do you know that have been to Lapland?

I think it’s got more popular over the years.

Two. They all loved it

typicaltuesdaynight · 10/11/2024 18:14

Several and I live In a tiny village. Not in my budget however

Whatdoyoumeanwinter · 10/11/2024 18:19

going by these comments if your child doesn’t go, they’ll be singled out in school for not going to see Santa in Lapland

None.

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 10/11/2024 18:20

3 I think. They said on sm that they had a wonderful time and it does indeed look lovely but it's not something I'm bothered about.

Not really, unless I'm reading different comments? It seems pretty uncommon to have been.

boogiewoogie24 · 10/11/2024 18:39

I worked in the village one year!

Are we reading the same thread 🤣

Allnewtometoo · 10/11/2024 18:41

Several. I'm the poor friend 😆

SirChenjins · 10/11/2024 18:42

One. No-one else I know is daft enough.

Latticewindow · 10/11/2024 18:43

We went 17 years ago - it was amazing!

SauvignonBlonk · 10/11/2024 18:44

Quite a few families I know have been. I took DD for a day trip when she was 7.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 10/11/2024 19:24

We went and I know of two other families who went.

It’s often difficult to go because schools break up so late.

LBFseBrom · 10/11/2024 19:54

I know nobody who has been to Lapland, neither did I realise it had become popular. What is special about it? I'm sure it is lovely but so are many places.

Neodymium · 10/11/2024 19:56

I went last year, it was amazing. But yes expensive.

we came to Europe from Australia.

Littletreefrog · 10/11/2024 19:56

We've been twice, one family we know are on their 3rd time and I know of three other families who have been once. To be honest most of us went for the fantastic scenery and snow activities etc. If you just want to see Santa it's a very expensive way of doing it.

Why does going to Lapland make you daft?

Coffeetacoscheese · 10/11/2024 20:08

A handful including ourselves. We loved it and I don’t care if people think we’re daft for having gone.

Only one, me. Went on a non-Santa holiday. We're 100 north of Rovaniemi. Booked it all individually. Had half board hotel which was good. We went because of the guaranteed snow for cross country skiing. It was brilliant. Well, except from being overtaken by the Finnish toddlers on skis 🤣. Most of the people in the village were Finnish families and SERIOUS skiers (as in skiing so far out that they'd camp in the snow overnight and ski back the next day arriving mid afternoon (I'm not kidding - they pulled their kit on sledges).

We did the ice hotel visit and dog sledding both of which were fun, but the cross country was the reason for going (I hate downhill and love cross country but there's nowhere in the alps where there's guaranteed snow and tour skiing involves coming back down, so that doesn't interest me!).

It was one of the best experiences of my life. It was expensive and I'll probably never be able to afford going back. It was so pristine though, I felt a bit guilty for going there as a tourist. So I think once is my fair share in order to help preserve it for others. That's what I tell myself anyway when I find myself wishing I could go back!

Tomatocutwithazigzagedge · 10/11/2024 20:31

We took my DS over 13 years ago. We stayed over Christmas for 4 nights, in a cabin at the Santa village in Rovaniemi. Booked everything independently and did our "Santa experience" with two visits to Joulukka, rather than the village itself, which was absolutely magical and it seems is still there today.

Two of my cousins took their kids on the day trips operated by Canterbury if I recall, one old school friend took her two kids on a three day experience, as did my closest friends with their two kids.

NowStartAgain · 10/11/2024 20:36

We did. Expensive but not impossible for us on a low income to pay for in instalments. Amazing memories. Total magical! The snowy scenery, the colour of the sky, the northern lights. It wasn’t just a Santa trip!

Inghams travel company were recently advertising 7 day Lapland trips at roughly half price for December departure this year. I have to admit it is tempting to go back one day.

Smartiepants79 · 10/11/2024 20:40

We have and I can think of maybe one or two others.
It was a truly memorable trip.
Never been anywhere like it and the Xmas vibes for the kids was very special.
It was expensive but worth it to us.

I don't understand the sneeriness. Why would it be daft?

Kitkat1523 · 10/11/2024 20:55

Personally, I don’t know anyone
