Melanoma on little toe? Picture attached.

Hi all,

I'm not looking for a diagnoses as have already been referred on the 'two week wait' to the Dermatology dept. Blummin pain as I was there on Monday for something on leg, that they will scrape off (yum!).

I'll attach a pic of my gnarly little toe...

It wasn't there in August (holiday). I asked how sudden these things can appear and gp dermatology specialist said sometimes within weeks...

I'm keeping calm but head all over place as I've been so unwell in last 3 years, low immune system, picking up any infection, at one point I was given a 2 month course of antibiotics. I've had several weekly courses. I've had scans on lymph nodes - thankfully all clear. Random lumps on shoulder... I could go on.

Can I ask though, has anyone had something appear like this within say - 2 months?

It sounds like you're on the right pathway within the NHS, understand that it's a worry, reassuring about the lymph nodes.

I had a random dark patch emerge under a toenail. I only ever see it when I cut my nails really short. Had it checked out along with some other skin patches and thankfully nothing of concern. So easy to say, but try not to worry until you know for sure what you're dealing with. It's a waste of time. I say use that time to treat yourself to something nice instead.

Thank you guys, I know, I just need to wait. I guess in these circumstances everyone wants someone to say - mine was absolutely idententical and it turns out I'd stepped on a Sharpie 🤣

I'm off to bed, it'll do me no good pondering. I shall read myself to sleep with the kindle (then wake when it bangs on my face!).

Nn xx

Appointment through - Friday morning.

3 more sleeps! I'm so anxious.

Even if they want to biopsy - there's not much of my little toe to biopsy from 🤣😭.
Oh and randomly a dark freckly has appeared on a toe of the other foot. Why are they coming from nowhere?!.

Oh well, can only wait and see.

Tim ti tum ti tum....

Oh and I thought 2WW was waiting to see if pregnancy positive post ovulation! I'm well past that one.

Good luck OP. Hope everything is ok

freddyfluffball · 12/11/2024 20:21

My little boy had something like this develop on his little finger suddenly and was referred, and the consultant dermatologist was not concerned at all, she said we all grow new freckles from time to time 😳 It's still there but hasn't really grown bigger in the last ten months so hopefully she was right. It looks very similar.

JanglingJack · 12/11/2024 20:30

Thanks guys. I'll update Friday.

Hopefully seeing Grandaughter on Thursday, that will stop my mind churning! Might knacker me out though 🤣

Just a quick one as I'm absolutely shattered.

So this morning was the tele dermatology appointment, saw the nurse and photos taken. I was told I'd be contacted by telephone in the week once consultant has viewed pictures if they wanted to investigate further, or in writing if no further option.

The nurse who I saw this morning called 3 hours later to say the consultant has viewed and wants to do an excisional biopsy (most invasive) and have entire lesion removed for testing and they'll be in touch with an appointment.

That's knocked me sideways, I thought if anything a sample for biopsy, but no - straight into half my little toe being removed (not that I'm bothered by that, but they're not messing around are they?

Who knows? Night night xx

Evening. That was quick, but good in a way that they will remove it all asap. I hope you get some sleep x

Enough4me · 16/11/2024 00:40

Better to do it and know. Best wishes for the results x

Duc · 16/11/2024 00:47

I’m pleased to hear they are acting fast and will have it removed. Good job you mentioned it initially!

I agree it's scary but as someone with melanoma
I will say this is the most straight forward way to do things. If they did a small biopsy and didn't get clear margins then you'd have to have 2 operations within 1 month. I will say that if you have a + result for melanoma you'll likely need a wide local excision.

There's a fantastic group on Facebook called 'Melanomates' join that for support. We're a lovely bunch. You can join if you're just waiting for biopsy results or the initial biopsy

Willooth · 16/11/2024 01:16

OP I had a suspicious mole on my leg, and have family history of melanoma.

I went to the clinic thinking it was just an initial look but they were concerned and removed it and margins around it there and then. I left with 7 stitches in my leg!

Any way they rang a couple of weeks later to say everything was clear and no signs of malignancy

namechange678 · 16/11/2024 01:26

I've been through this process. Had melanoma on my foot (not toe) but am totally fine now. Try not to panic.

It's good that they're removing it, its the safest thing to do. If it tests positive for melanoma, they'll also be able to classify how much it's grown, and whether there's a risk its spread further. They may decide that they need to remove more skin after, as they need to remove a "margin" around where it was, to make sure it doesn't come back. For me, as quite a lot was removed, they had to do a skin graft, replacing it with skin taken from another part of my body.

The most annoying thing was not being able to put weight on my foot as it healed. I recommend thinking ahead to plan how you might handle that.

Mittens67 · 16/11/2024 02:19

Another recommendation to join Melanomates on facebook. You will get lots of good support and info there.
Treatment for melanoma has improved enormously in recent years.

Ah thank you all for your messages, it really means a lot. Not too many people to talk to IRL (boo hoo lol) so I'll definitely join the Facebook group - thank you!

@namechange678 crikey, that's an awful lot to go through! I was wondering about that, and whilst it's not massive it doesn't much to stitch back together - not much extra skin on my toe! I suppose at least I'll be better off as hobble on my heel or something - time will tell!

Of course I've been Dr Googling some more and have googled myself into acral whatnot - purely because it looks similar.
I'm a nightmare!
Talking of... I must have got some sleep as I was dreaming I was hundreds of years in the future. There were very few humans, little possessions But Donald Trump was still president 😭🤣 wake me up! No don't 🤣 This is one of the other photos...

Thank you again!

Ohh I forgot to add... I've never really been one for getting my feet out, sandals or pedicures etc but now they're getting more attention than they've ever had, could some point me in the direction of...

I don't know what it is, like a moisturing sock thing that women use to get sandal ready in the summer, removes hard skin? Not sure...!

Id happily just have toe removed!

DH and I have both had operations to remove suspicious things. It's about the same work to remove as biopsy in many cases so they will often do that with smaller samples. Both nothing in our case so don't assume it bad news.

I also know two people who had skin irregularities removed where the results were pre cancerous or indeed cancerous. Both are absolutely fine and needed no further treatment other then ongoing screening incase the issue repeated.

It was scary, but I also felt the NHS did a really good job of treating it quickly. I still find the skin graft kind of magic, like, its so cool that they can just stick a bit of me to another bit of me 😃

OchAyeTheN00 · 16/11/2024 10:25

I had a suspicious looking thing removed too, they prefer to just take the whole lot at biopsy stage I think. Good luck Op!

DirlingWhervish · 16/11/2024 11:13

Glad you're getting proactive treatment OP. I've no experience or knowledge of melanoma so will leave advice to the professionals. I only know that sometimes a biopsy can trigger some tumors to become aggressive, so I too would probably want it just removed without aggrevating it. Well done for getting it checked out and hope the procedure goes smoothly.

JanglingJack · 21/11/2024 07:31

Thank you all so much.

I had a call yesterday checking if I was able to attend biopsy today? I said I hadn't heard anything. She said you had a call on Friday after the tele dermatology appointment... Yes but it was left as wait for appointment.

She huffed and said let me look at paperwork... Can you come in tomorrow? I was erring as needed to think about transport and she said look, this is a well respected, much in need consultant so if he thinks it's urgent, it is...
Okay I'll come in.

2 hours later letter come through post

Diagnoses, clinical description, dermoscopic description...

Plan: Urgent review with a view to excise lesion under consultant name 21/11/24

I'm shitting it! Sorry!
