What temperature is your house? (No DCs)

Sia8899 · 08/11/2024 13:47

If you have no DCs that you need to keep warm, what is your winter “base” temperature during the day and what temperature do you heat to when at home/in the evening?

For the last two winters what used to be my “base” temperature is now the temperature I heat to but my house is suffering! And I have no idea any more what’s normal as I’ve got used to living at a lower temperature

Due to living somewhere with high humidity and having condensation/ mould issues we leave the heating on at 19.5.

We tried scrimping on heating and in the end we had to fork out for a decent sized dehumidifier to undo the damage we had caused to the home. Also needed condensation paint and new paint to eradicate the damage. Learnt my lesson!

Wigglywoowho · 08/11/2024 13:53

We keep the house at 19 during the day and 17 when everyone is in bed. I have to open the windows to air the place and put the dehumidifier on.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 08/11/2024 13:55

No idea, we don't have a thermostat. Heating is on now because I'm cold and I need to get the bloody washing dry.

Nannyfannybanny · 08/11/2024 13:59

18c feels comfortable for us in the day, I am 74,DH late 60s. I like single figures at night, window open. We're in the SE corner, and you can count on the fingers of one hand how many times the heating has gone on this year. It's been an hour in the morning to shower,a couple of evenings.

Nannyfannybanny · 08/11/2024 14:01

How do so many people have central heating without a thermostat! We have a lot of plants over wintering in the conservatory and an in out thermometer, plus the one for the central heating.

Pust · 08/11/2024 14:02

Last year was 18, this year 20 normally or 19, feeling the cold because of illness but the house has just felt better, less kind of damp coldness in the living room so will probably keep it going forward around this temp

Autumn1990 · 08/11/2024 14:05

Mine can vary between 16 and 25. Solid fuel heating and as it’s fairly mild I let it go out overnight and don’t relight until teatime. It’s a bit hot if it’s lit all day and night

NunyaBeeswax · 08/11/2024 14:06

My thermometer says it's 12c at the moment.
Doesn't feel cold. I've got joggers t-shirt and a thin long sleeve on shirt on.

MiddleAgedDread · 08/11/2024 14:08

Thermostat is set to 20 for a couple of hours morning and evening, 16 during the day and 14 overnight. If I'm WFH then 16 is too cold if it drops that low and I often boost it for an hour when it gets down to about 18.

oustedbymymate · 08/11/2024 14:08

2 DC 2/4. Were out at work/school etc in the day. Heating off. Boost to 17/18 at home. Off at night. We use timed oil filled radiators in keeps rooms to keep chill off. They stay around 16 at night.

Anisty · 08/11/2024 14:10

18° is fine during the day as i'm in and out and moving. 17½° fine if i am very busy in the house with physical tasks. In fact it can drop to 15/16 before i notice.

Evening when i'm sitting watching tv, i feel cold at 19 and i like it nice and toasty about 24!

We don't have our heating set to come on automatically at all. We put on when cold and off when hot.

HappiestSleeping · 08/11/2024 14:12

We have not yet put the heating on other than a boost for an hour here and there. Thermostat reads 17.5 currently, so it will be warmer upstairs. It will drop a bit in the night.

I do, however, light the log burner, which warms the living room and quite a lot of the downstairs, and is under our bedroom. I think we have lit it about 8 times so far.

Blimey! What country are you in? I am in Scotland and it's 16.5 just now on my thermostat. I don't feel cold but it is much colder outside today than yesterday.

It hasn't been as low as 12 in Scotland (not in my house anyway!) since last winter

2triangles · 08/11/2024 14:16

My central heating is not working so I’m using oil filled radiators. 13c in the cooler parts of the house and 17 in the warmer areas, I’m freezing and wearing two pairs of fleece lined trousers, two pairs of socks and a hoodie over a long sleeved base layer. I feel like I need one more layer and a hot drink.

The outside temperature is 10c here.

Hoppinggreen · 08/11/2024 14:17

I like it around 18c, DH would like it warmer but he works upstairs with loads of computers so his room is warmer anyway. DS is at school during the day but prefers it cooler like me anyway and sleeps with his window open most of the year
If DD comes home for the weekend she has to be stopped turning it up to 25 if her and DS share a room on holiday air con wars break out!

WrigglyDonCat · 08/11/2024 14:17

Thermostat upstairs in the bedroom with windows open says 14.5C on the south coast. I'm sat doing accounts and it's fine. But I wear thermal base layers top and bottom for about 6 months of the year as I hate the feel of a centrally heated house so unless it's extremely cold (like <0 outside and about 6-7C on the thermostat) it's windows open and heating off.

mynameiscalypso · 08/11/2024 14:18

We WFH and like to have our thermostat reading 20 degrees although that's not reflective of the temperature throughout the house. It's quite old, listed and damp so it needs warming up. I do have a child but it makes zero difference as to heating not least as we're at home much more than he is!

TTPDTS · 08/11/2024 14:18

About 22* 😂

TheWittyBird · 08/11/2024 14:20

Mine is at 5o till 6pm then 20o toll 9 pm due to high costs of heating (I'm sitting at night under a throw ) I'm in Scotland.

I'm in England, the midlands area. Forecast says it's 9c outside at the moment. I run hot so like my house chilly... It also stops visitors hanging around too long.. ha. 🤪

HappiestSleeping · 08/11/2024 14:32

I forgot to say that my wife likes the windows open. I have to be careful as she's on here and knows my username, however I have found that I have become my father and the words "we aren't heating the garden" may well have passed my lips. This is not the first time that I have noticed myself saying things my parents did. Very depressing.

Sia8899 · 08/11/2024 14:36

Do those of you with houses under 15° not get damp and mould??

I’ve started opening windows in the morning, bought a new dehumidifier and a tin of anti condensation paint. It’s the first day of single figures where I am and although I’m not really cold in a jumper at 16° the air does feel damp in here

OP posts:
Fuelledbylatte · 08/11/2024 14:37

15/16 in the day

18.5 in evenings

Nothing on overnight but wouldn't want it below 6 degrees

2triangles · 08/11/2024 14:39

My house smells damp, I’m looking at getting some dehumidifiers and a few more oil filled radiators while I decide whether to replace my boiler or get a whole new system.

OnionBudgie · 08/11/2024 14:39

No heating on at all during the day, so it can go as cold as 11 deg C, but more usually around 13 deg C in winter. In the evening the heat goes on to 19 deg C, no higher. I wear layers and a blanket, and that suits me. Trying to think of the environment, etc etc. 😅 I do use a dehumidifier, and open the windows for a good while if it's not raining.
