What temperature is your house? (No DCs)

Sia8899 · 08/11/2024 13:47

If you have no DCs that you need to keep warm, what is your winter “base” temperature during the day and what temperature do you heat to when at home/in the evening?

For the last two winters what used to be my “base” temperature is now the temperature I heat to but my house is suffering! And I have no idea any more what’s normal as I’ve got used to living at a lower temperature

Tell you what, I'll send it off to be calibrated by the local science dept at the Uni. 👍🏻

Weather says it's 7c outside right now, alas I don't have a calibrated mercury thermometer outside or I'd check their work for you.

Fwiw I have just sat with the thermometer in my armpit and it rose by 2 degrees.. and got moist.. so I put it back. 🤪

ETA: house is summer isn't too bad. I set up two fans to cause air movement in the upstairs which sucks the heat from the ground floor up the stairs well.

Edited

I don’t disbelieve the met office so it’s fine, you don’t need to bother.

Used to have heating set to 20 before the price hikes. Now even paying nearly 3 times that we can only have heating on 16/17 and boosted to 18 when we shower / dress.

Coffeebreakneeds · 08/11/2024 22:47

Heating is off during the day and the house seems to sit at around 16.5-17. Heating is set at 18.5 when it's on and I will pop it on in the evening (so much easier now we have the Hive). If I work from home I might pop it on for an hour if I get chilly during the day. Our bedroom window is permanently open and I encourage the kids to open theirs for circulation at night otherwise the windows have condensation.

My thermometer says it's 12c at the moment.
Doesn't feel cold. I've got joggers t-shirt and a thin long sleeve on shirt on.

That's what it is outside!! How you you bear it so cold?!

motherofonegirl · 08/11/2024 22:56

5am-7.15am 18°C whilst we are getting up, showered dressed - usually leave home before 7.15am for the day

7.15am-4pm 15°C usually one of us is home working, everyone else is at work/school. Even at the weekend when we are all home we are moving around so don't need the house as warm as first thing or evening

4pm-10pm 18°C as we tend to be more sedintary

12°C overnight

I've always been the same tbh.
In the 80s we didn't have central heating, just gas fires and we weren't allowed to use them.
Used to wake up to glasses of water by the bed frozen over. Sheets of ice on the inside of the windows etc.

It's not too bad being a bit used to the cold, except when the weather warms up and I can't walk anywhere without sweating 3 pints out of me.
I walked the dog earlier today, just in a t-shirt and little light running jacket, sweat was dripping after 20minutes. 🤣

Frith2013 · 08/11/2024 23:03

15 degrees at the moment. I'm on the sofa with a quilt and hot water bottle.

I can't afford to have the heating on.

Xenia · 08/11/2024 23:06

When the heating is on (now e.g.) it is 25C, Lovely.

Chickdaft · 08/11/2024 23:07

No idea to be honest. It’s been 15 the last couple of days, in the far NW of Scotland. Put the living room multi fuel stove on tonight which heats the living room down to the kitchen. Hardly used the oil heating this last month but know that will change soon as getting darker by just after 5pm

tillyandmilly · 08/11/2024 23:10

14 degrees - south east - WFH - hate hot rooms - I put a dressing fleecy gown to work!

NewName24 · 08/11/2024 23:12

During the day it only comes on if it drops to 14 degrees.

During the evening when we are likely to be sitting still it comes on at 18 degrees.

Overnight it would only come on if the house temperature dropped below 8 (it never does).

PickAChew · 08/11/2024 23:18

Some rooms are warmer and some cooler than the one with the thermostat it but we have it set at 18, during the day, though the boost button has been pressed a few times, this week, with the lack of warmth from the sun. The bones of the house have got rather cold.

User1836484645R · 08/11/2024 23:18

Our house doesn’t have a consistent overall temperature. The room I’m in is currently 20 but the thermostat in the hall is showing 16.5.

Wigtopia · 08/11/2024 23:23

I know not normal, but we don’t heat it until it gets below 14 degrees. Today we were at 13.7 but still didn’t begin heating it as we were home later than usual and only had an hour before getting into bed. Do have a hot water bottle in bed though! I think we will warm up the house tomorrow

Mere1 · 08/11/2024 23:25

21 from 8 am to 10pm.

ViciousCurrentBun · 08/11/2024 23:30

18.5.

Heating would only click on overnight if it went below frost setting. Around 20 years ago when it was -17 where we lived it was on overnight.

AlteredStater · 08/11/2024 23:39

Thermostat is set to 18.5 but sometimes gets bumped up to 19 for awhile. At night it's set to 17.5.

Beezknees · 08/11/2024 23:50

Mine is at 16 degrees, I bump it to 20 for a couple of hours in the morning and evening in the dead of winter. I have DC but he's almost an adult.

I don't feel the cold much, haven't worn a coat outside yet and am still sleeping naked!

Gamerlady · 08/11/2024 23:55

My thermostat sits at 15 degrees. Can't afford to put the heating on. I have a heated throw to keep me warm.

Wigtopia · 09/11/2024 07:12

No damp and mould yet - been in this house 7 years. I think because we have the windows open all day and sleep with windows open so the cross breeze prevents that. Blocked up chimney breasts also have air brick in each one. I think without proper ventilation and windows being open it would be a different story

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/11/2024 07:32

We operate ours via the thermostat. If the house feels cold it goes on at 21 but it’s always off at night, or from say 10 pm until anyone feels we need it on again - like this morning.

Same. 14.5 here most of the time. Can't bear it much warmer.

BobnLen · 09/11/2024 07:36

About 19 or 20, usually 19 is enough in the day when doing stuff and about 20 in the evening when sat down more, we are retired

FluffyDiplodocus · 09/11/2024 07:41

15 overnight and when we’re out, 18 or 19 when we’re home. Usually 18 and then I boost it to 19 if it starts feeling chilly. I hate being cold, I’d happily have it higher if money was no object!
