What temperature is your house? (No DCs)

Sia8899 · 08/11/2024 13:47

If you have no DCs that you need to keep warm, what is your winter “base” temperature during the day and what temperature do you heat to when at home/in the evening?

For the last two winters what used to be my “base” temperature is now the temperature I heat to but my house is suffering! And I have no idea any more what’s normal as I’ve got used to living at a lower temperature

Mines 21° with no heating, we haven't used it at all yet. I think next door heat theirs like a sauna and we reap the benefits 😂

Gekeos · 08/11/2024 19:58

We set our thermostat at 21 the house is always a nice temperature, although I have radiators off in bedrooms as I like to keep them cool.

Cavalierchaos · 08/11/2024 20:03

House is 14.5° and I haven't put the heating on yet. I'll probably put it on when it gets to 13°.

ReignOfError · 08/11/2024 20:08

Off overnight, 18 for an hour in the morning, 16 during the day (we are retired so home a fair bit), 18 for 2.5 hours in the evening. Bedroom and bathroom window are always open a little, and I open all the other windows for at least 15 minutes every day. If I’m cold I wear an Oody-type thing, we move around a lot, and if necessary, we have heated throws.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 08/11/2024 20:14

I live in a well insulated new build and my house rarely goes below 18 degrees. In the evenings I put the heating on for half an hour, that puts the heating up to 21 degrees which is toasty.

Anything below 18 degrees feels cold to me.

Rainydaysandsundays13 · 08/11/2024 20:19

I leave the house set to 18 during the day on constant (as only kicks in if it drops below that.) Then from around 5-10pm I turn upto 19.5. Looking at my app, it's showing an average of being on for around 2 hours a day in total.

abracadabra1980 · 08/11/2024 20:23

19.5 but turn it up to 20.5 if I haven't been living or haven't eaten much as then I get cold very easily.
Have a woodburner bit since I got my electric throw, have no need for tray really. Have since purchased two more electric throws - use one so I can sit in my cold conservatory for an hour with a cup of tea, in the morning while my dogs (puppy needs supervising) have wees and poos and also find half of their breakfast kibble before I go back in and get ready for the day.
Other one is on my bed. Much thinner than the sofa one, but I'm under it now and it's soooooo toasty.
I never have the heating on at night (12*)

Do those of you with houses under 15° not get damp and mould??

I’ve started opening windows in the morning, bought a new dehumidifier and a tin of anti condensation paint. It’s the first day of single figures where I am and although I’m not really cold in a jumper at 16° the air does feel damp in here

No, only a little on the windows on the coldest nights as there are always at least two windows open on opposite sides of the house. Washing dries in the conservatory or on an outside line, so no moisture from that to get into the main house.

BabyFever246 · 08/11/2024 20:44

15 degrees during day while we're out, 19 degrees evenings, 15 degrees overnight. We have an almost 1yo and the main room we stay in has a small heater we set to 22ish if we're cold. That's the baseline but if we're cold we boost it.

We're lucky we don't have to worry hugely about the heating bill. We're not rolling in it, we had a single weekend city break almost 2 years ago for a milestone birthday (on which our baby was conceived 🫣), but before that the last time we went on a holiday was probably 2017ish. But we don't need to worry too much about heating or strict food budgeting because of it.

zaffa · 08/11/2024 21:12

20 during the day and 15 at night - I like it cold and fresh.
I have a heater in my home office as well as it's cold even when the rest of the house is 20.

BrendaSmall · 08/11/2024 21:16

Haven got a clue what the temperature is in my house, I do know we haven’t put the heating on yet, and I’m still putting washing outside on the line to dry and still got the bedroom windows open 24/7
im in the South West

SabreIsMyFave · 08/11/2024 21:20

Our thermostat is set at 15 degrees C at the moment. Had to crank it up to 17 C earlier though, as it's chilly out here in the sticks! (5 C right now outside.) DH would have it at 20 C from October to April if he could. But I would be suffocating and we would have a huge gas bill.

So we keep it lower and he puts his big dressing gown of doom on! 😬

WrigglyDonCat · 08/11/2024 14:17

Thermostat upstairs in the bedroom with windows open says 14.5C on the south coast. I'm sat doing accounts and it's fine. But I wear thermal base layers top and bottom for about 6 months of the year as I hate the feel of a centrally heated house so unless it's extremely cold (like <0 outside and about 6-7C on the thermostat) it's windows open and heating off.

Same here. My house is usually around 14.5. Central heating makes me feel ill. I'm very happy and comfortable at 14.5. I do have a 15 yo DS.

Ilovemyshed · 08/11/2024 21:28

Min 19-20, often 21-22. We have loads of insulation so the heating is inly on for a short burst and the heat is retained. I usually have to open a window upstairs 😂

My thermometer says it's 12c at the moment.
Doesn't feel cold. I've got joggers t-shirt and a thin long sleeve on shirt on.

Bloody hard core

Like bollocks is your house 12° and you're just fine and dandy.

Agree. I find it hard to believe that any ‘house’ is only 12 degrees when 9/10 outside.

I live in a draughty Victorian (admittedly terraced) house and ours was 16 degrees this morning and is approx 10 degrees outside. It did drop to about 6 over night.

cherrysonata · 08/11/2024 21:38

22 during the day, 16 at night.

wastingtimeonhere · 08/11/2024 21:40

Thermostat set at 21. DH is fairly immobile, so gets cold easily. I don't have the radiator on in my room though, it gets warm enough. I usually have a window open slightly all year round.

Titsywoo · 08/11/2024 21:48

Mine is set to 18 degrees - it doesn't drop below that until it is minus figures outside usually. Our house is very well insulated. Sometimes when it is cold and damp outside I turn it up so the heating comes on. Overnight I don't want heating on so it is set at 13 degrees from 10pm to 6am.

DelilahBucket · 08/11/2024 22:02

17-19 depending on if we're moving around or not. Last year didn't go above 18 most of the time but have been more inclined to turn it up this year. Especially DH as he has been working away mid week and has gotten used to higher temps. I tend to have it lower when he isn't here.

Are you sure it’s correct?

The upstairs of your house is only 2x the temp of your fridge whilst it’s double figures outside?

Does your house get really hot in the summer?

Tell you what, I'll send it off to be calibrated by the local science dept at the Uni. 👍🏻

Weather says it's 7c outside right now, alas I don't have a calibrated mercury thermometer outside or I'd check their work for you.

Fwiw I have just sat with the thermometer in my armpit and it rose by 2 degrees.. and got moist.. so I put it back. 🤪

ETA: house is summer isn't too bad. I set up two fans to cause air movement in the upstairs which sucks the heat from the ground floor up the stairs well.
