Getting home from holiday - what is the first thing you do?

We just got home from holiday this morning at 9.30am. Once I get in I have to get the first load of washing on as soon as I can. I start the washing machine. Even before showering etc. my first load is done and in the dryer. What is the first thing you do?

Passports back in their usual storage place, kettle on, unpack suitcases and put the clothes away. Update Word document about holiday packing so anything that didn't work, things that worked well, anything that needs actioning before next holiday (damaged suitcase etc), if I forgot to take anything. Next time we go away I will have forgotten about these things so it's a pertinent reminder. (It also has notes about passport renewal dates etc, so I don't have to dig them out to check).

I don't need to do laundry, windows already open, plants have been looked after, post has been recycled or propped up for our attention, so really it's time for a circuit around the garden looking at the leafy inmates and seeing how they've fared while we've been away. And pondering getting the mower out if the lawn resembles a field.

This is serious organisation 👏

Washing seems to be the number one task and understandable but why do I get the feeling that it's almost always the women who does this. Would I be wrong to think the woman does all the packing too before going on holiday? Assuming there's a male partner or husband on the scene 🫤

When we come back from two weeks in Greece we usually get home around 6.30pm. First thing is bung the beach towels in the wash, order a pizza and unlock all the windows. Also run the shower and taps to clear any standing water. Cases stay downstairs and we unpack properly the following morning.

DH does the packing - he’s great at it. My dad always did the packing as well, but he was ex army and very organised!

I just got home from a 2 week cruise and DH got the washing machine on straight away. Vacuumed the dog hair off the rug and steam mopped the kitchen floor. My adult ds has been caring for my foster son (young adult) for the last 2 weeks and although my DS is a great cook and been driving him to and from college he is not so good with the cleaning. I went off to collect my foster son from college and we got caught in terrible traffic. When we finally got back DH had cleaned the top of the cooker and was charging the bedding too.

First load of washing on, go for a wee on my own toilet, unpack every else then settle down for a bit of tv and internet catch up.

Say hello to the cat, put on a wash and then wonder why I don't have more art on my walls. Usually when I'm at home everything seems cluttered, but when I've been away the walls looked bare, initially.

Let the cats out, then put washing on, hoover up the cat litter that has inevitably been kicked around the place, then shower. The cats don't go out if I'm away as they're arseholes timid of strangers, who won't come back for anyone else 😂 so they're always desperate to go outside, they also hold a grudge and will ignore me until they feel I have been punished enough for leaving them with that strange woman(my mother).

Love this 😻
My previous cat sat with her back to me on the couch armrest for an entire weekend, before she deigned to turn around. Starting at my feet, she slowly worked her way up my body for cuddles. 😁

Laundry first. But you need to unpack to get the laundry sorted. On a family holiday we pack a dirty laundry suitcase for the way home usually in a black bag so that can be emptied. Then I make 3 or 4 bundles of laundry by colour. There are 5 of us so there is a lot plus the things we wear in the days before we go. Now that I think of it, it's quite satisfying.

Then I water the plants and make a tea or coffee and unpack. I like an empty suitcase as soon as possible to feel at home.

Cup of tea, go and collect the cat from the cattery, get some washing on.

After a cup of tea and the first load of laundry on - vacuum. All the dust has settled and I can suck it all up.
