Getting home from holiday - what is the first thing you do?

We just got home from holiday this morning at 9.30am. Once I get in I have to get the first load of washing on as soon as I can. I start the washing machine. Even before showering etc. my first load is done and in the dryer. What is the first thing you do?

Cup of tea, find/fuss over cat, check the garden and greenhouse. Glass of wine and relax. No laundry till day after. Unpack essentials e.g. sponge bag.

CremeEggThief · 08/11/2024 12:09

It completely depends on the time I get back!

IF it's before 1 am I usually unpack that night though and get everything in the laubdry basket.

aintnospringchicken · 08/11/2024 12:13

If it's during the day/ early evening I will put a load in the washing machine and either hang it out or put on the dryer inside.
If we arrive home late I'll load up the washing machine and put it on the following morning.
While I'm sorting out the washing,DH is making cups of tea.

anyolddinosaur · 08/11/2024 12:15

Check if anything needs watering, sort the post into junk and action or read later, put the kettle on.

Washing comes next. We've never stayed anywhere with bed bugs but if we had it would be cases outside until the washing was done.

Bacon butty. I don't have them often, but nowhere else in the world makes bacon "right", so I feel deprived when abroad!

Look at the post

SmileyHappyPeopleInTheSun · 08/11/2024 12:30

Would I be wrong to think the woman does all the packing too before going on holiday? Assuming there's a male partner or husband on the scene

DH does his own packing always has but when kids were young I did get stressed before holidays doing their packing as well as mine. However turns out I was actually teaching them how to do it at same time - and by much younger age than I was expecting they could do their own packing with a cursory look over.

They can all put their own washing on and sort but it does generally seem to end up a me task - though few times they have come off holiday and just done their washing so maybe that's learnt behavior as well.

Why would you assume that? We’ve always packed our own bags. Why wouldn’t we?

Comedycook · 08/11/2024 12:32

Can't believe people do laundry on holiday.

I get one holiday a year....there's no way I'm doing the washing on it. I'd rather have a huge pile when I get home.

Can't believe people do laundry on holiday.

We often booked holiday cottages when the kids were small. I often took advantage of their laundry facilities before we went home.

Sdpbody · 08/11/2024 12:51

Open windows, put the first wash on, make a cup of tea and then start unpacking.

theDudesmummy · 08/11/2024 12:54

It's a four-day journey for us, mostly in the car, so I generally walk about a lot to stretch my legs after opening windows and doors. Washing and post are for the next day.

vdbfamily · 08/11/2024 12:56

I am the same, unpack and get first load of washing on🙂

I was partially quoting a previous poster - hence it being in bold exactly as you have done to my post- and then saying that wasn't the case for us as my DH always packs for himself.

This was the original post - and it was linked to so many posters putting washing on.

Washing seems to be the number one task and understandable but why do I get the feeling that it's almost always the women who does this. Would I be wrong to think the woman does all the packing too before going on holiday? Assuming there's a male partner or husband on the scene 🫤

So I'm not making that assumption but refuting it.

IceSkates · 08/11/2024 12:59

Put the kettle on, go for a wee, kids usually want a snack, open some windows, open the patio doors, then I usually have a little look around the garden, not sure why I do that😆

We always put dirty washing in a bin bag, so I usually get that in the washing machine too.

TorroFerney · 08/11/2024 13:00

Open post , unpack, washing machine on. All that will be done and the first wash on within 20 minutes of getting in. Exception is after a long haul flight if we haven't been to bed for over 24 hours, then it's straight to bed and those things done within 2 mins of getting up.

Ah, ok @SmileyHappyPeopleInTheSun . Misunderstood. My bad.

Run the kitchen tap for a bit, put the kettle on, open windows.

Run the kitchen tap?

JBJ · 08/11/2024 13:03

Washing straight in the machine, kettle on, Ds takes bags upstairs and I make a cuppa and cuddle the dog.

Wtfdude · 08/11/2024 13:04

Take off trousers, drink liter of water because I never do enough when travelling, put my feet up. Shower after a bit.
Washing goes on next day

BobbyBiscuits · 08/11/2024 13:06

The first thing you do is laundry! You're a better woman than I!
I see the cats, check each room, not quite sure what for. Then check the fridge and if there isn't any booze in there I'll turn round, go back to the airport and leave the country again! 🤣

Cornecopia · 08/11/2024 13:06

I unpack straight away or it makes me feel funny. Washing on, windows open

I do this, we’re between two homes at the moment and when we get to either I run it to get rid of lurgies 🤣 my husband and the plumber have told me it doesn’t work like that, the supply is from the mains but I still find myself doing it.

MaidOfSteel · 08/11/2024 13:15

I usually go right to bed for a few hours as I'm in a lot of pain after the travelling. My husband is tge one who'll start unpacking and get on with the washing. We always make sure the place is clean & tidy before we go. It'd be awful to come home to a mess.

GiddyRobin · 08/11/2024 13:17

Make a cup of tea and lounge on the couch like some afflicted maiden of a Poe story! 🤣 Laundry is slung in the washing machine as we go, we rent Airbnbs. I don't iron though. In and out and that's it, so I'm barely aware of it as a chore!
