Getting home from holiday - what is the first thing you do?

We just got home from holiday this morning at 9.30am. Once I get in I have to get the first load of washing on as soon as I can. I start the washing machine. Even before showering etc. my first load is done and in the dryer. What is the first thing you do?

Nope @Oldwomanwithperkybosoms . DH and I pack our own stuff. First thing he does when we get back is unpack and put the washing on. Doing the washing is his job always!

I make coffee - empty the dishwasher/clean the kitchen depending how DS1 & 2 have left it. Then check the mail.

reluctantbrit · 08/11/2024 11:33

Cup of tea
Shower
check post
have a nap/go to bed depending when I am back

Unpacking and washing is for the next day

ThianWinter · 08/11/2024 11:33

Kettle on, shower, comfy clothes, brew.
The washing can wait, especially if it's summer holiday clothes which won't be worn again for a while.

First thing I do is go for a poo, I never go properly on holiday, and my bowels seem to always know I'm nearly home 😳then make a brew.

DrFoxtrot · 08/11/2024 11:35

I usually want to rest and do washing later. I don't live with my boyfriend and we've been away together, arrived back at his house and then he's faffed about with washing rather than spent the brief time with me before I leave to travel to my house! Now I know why! Most people seem to want to immediately do their washing.

Thunderpants88 · 08/11/2024 11:38

Massively regret going on holiday in the first place

Hatty65 · 08/11/2024 11:39

Same as you - empty a suitcase straight into the washing machine and then put everything else I can away and store the empty suitcases back under the beds.

Sandandsea123 · 08/11/2024 11:40

Cuddle our pets, open all the windows and put the kettle on.

Same. Unpack, washing, air the house, shower, cup of tea and then sit on the sofa to start planning the next holiday!

Good to know that and he's doing his share👍

Have a cup of tea.

Sort out the stinky cat food bin from where the neighbours have fed him and not washed out the sachets before putting them in the bin.

DH wants to put the washing on immediately and get the cases put away. I'm more relaxed about this but he gets antsy till its done....

Katherineryan1986 · 08/11/2024 11:44

We usually go self-catering so I get the majority of the washing done before we leave the accommodation.

But getting home, I unpack the suitcase putting everything away, then get a cup of tea (having bought milk on the drive home).

AChickenPooAndABiscuit · 08/11/2024 11:47

Quick wee and get the kettle on. Since we have a downstairs loo, I can sometimes fill the kettle and flick it on en route to the loo (if I can wait that long!)

SmileyHappyPeopleInTheSun · 08/11/2024 11:49

Find the cats - make a fuss.
Read any post.
Go to toilet then put kettle on - if near a meal time pop to shop to get food.
Once in and settled washing starts.

DappledOliveGroves · 08/11/2024 11:51

Clean the kitchen floor. Invariably, if someone has been feeding the cats, they don't scrub the floor where the cats drop their food all over it. I HATE a dirty kitchen floor, so it's the first thing I do. I then start the laundry (although the BEST holidays I've had is where there's been a nearby laundrette or somewhere with a washing machine, meaning that clothes come home clean!)

Beachhutgirl · 08/11/2024 11:51

I agree with OP, washing on. If I've travelled by car I often have a bag of laundry loose, so that can go straight on before I've even unloaded.

Unfortunately ironing, putting away, unpacking other stuff takes me a lot longer. But I hate having dirty laundry around.

This made me laugh. I am exactly the same 😆

protectthesmallones · 08/11/2024 11:52

Kettle on for tea.
Check pets.
Laundry on.

Oldwomanwithperkybosoms · 08/11/2024 11:31

Washing seems to be the number one task and understandable but why do I get the feeling that it's almost always the women who does this. Would I be wrong to think the woman does all the packing too before going on holiday? Assuming there's a male partner or husband on the scene 🫤

Very prescient of you! Yes, I do both, but when DH gets home from holiday he usually goes straight out and mows the lawn, which I never do.

mewkins · 08/11/2024 11:53

Itoldyousoo · 08/11/2024 11:19

Flush all the toilets !

Me too! Then look through the post.

35pEnergyDrink · 08/11/2024 11:57

Glass of wine, then have a wander round the garden to see how it’s all looking and whether anything has changed/grown/been eaten/fallen over/made a bid for world domination.

If I ascertain that all is ok, I’ll flop in front of the tv (with more wine)

StillAtTheRestaurant · 08/11/2024 11:57

Think "thank god I'm home" and have a cup of tea. My favourite part of any holiday is the journey back to the airport. I know, I'm weird!

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/11/2024 11:59

Put the kettle on and start a load of washing. If it’s late, go to bed and do the washing in the morning.

Hoppinggreen · 08/11/2024 12:00

Poop (I don't when I travel), check the cat is ok, go and collect the dog, put washing on and have a coffee - we have a really nice bean to cup machine and its hard getting one as good.

ThisTimeNextWeekDavid · 08/11/2024 12:03

Open the windows / french doors and let some air in (doesn’t matter what time of day / night).

Unpack the clean washing I paid to have laundered in the holiday destination. Unpack toiletries etc

Shower, wash hair etc.

Have a big glass of wine! I’m still on holiday as far as I’m concerned (I always book 2 days post holiday before returning to work).
