Getting home from holiday - what is the first thing you do?

We just got home from holiday this morning at 9.30am. Once I get in I have to get the first load of washing on as soon as I can. I start the washing machine. Even before showering etc. my first load is done and in the dryer. What is the first thing you do?

Open windows, fuss over cat, kettle on, washing on, unpack, suitcases away, shower. Kettle on again while I'm putting the washing away.

DH likes to 'chill' and if he had his way the suitcases would stay in the hallway for at least a day.

twilightcafe · 08/11/2024 13:31

Put the kettle on!

Oganesson118 · 08/11/2024 13:32

Go and get the cats, if they are in cattery. Otherwise, sit down and have a cup of tea, especially if I've been abroad - I rarely drink tea when abroad as I don't like the UHT milk you usually get.

soupmaker · 08/11/2024 13:33

In this order;

Open windows
Run kitchen tap and fill the kettle
Cup of tea
Put away passports
Get everyone to empty their suitcase and put away clean clothes
Bung what little laundry we have in the machine (because we travel light and launder while on holiday)
Suitcases into the loft
Another cup of tea
Send a teenager out to get supplies for lunch/dinner/ breakfast

Cosycover · 08/11/2024 13:34

Have a piece on square sausage if it's morning. Order Chinese if its night.

Washing is left for the next day.

Gymnopedie · 08/11/2024 13:38

Put the kettle on while DP unloads the car (usually canal holidays in the UK).

lemoncrisp · 08/11/2024 13:41

Dh kettle on, looks through post. Me, washing on.

tediber · 08/11/2024 13:47

Usually straight to bed as it's usually either late at night, in the night or had an overnight flight with little sleep.

If I'm home at a reasonable time, it's usually heating on, pjs on maybe open up all the mail and then bed.

The next day though or once I've had some sleep if I get back in the early hours, it's all about the unpacking and washing! Cases get emptied, everything gets put away that can and then I leave piles of washing all over the place and try to get them all done in one day.

Cuddle cat
Windows open
Washing on
Collapse with a cup of tea!

CoastalCalm · 08/11/2024 13:57

Say hello to the dog but usually he’s been with us in which case it would be to put him out fresh water and food , quick leaf through post while microwaving a mug of tomato soup and turning the heating up

tobee · 08/11/2024 14:00

Depends on time of year/time of day but sort through post and any parcels while thinking about weather we've got enough milk/bread/butter to tide us through or if anyone needs to pop to the shop. Usually we've picked some up on the last bit of the return journey.

Overtheatlantic · 08/11/2024 14:02

Find the cat and give her a cuddle while DH starts the laundry and asks what’s for dinner.

ManchesterGirl2 · 08/11/2024 14:03

Put the kettle on.

Flush all the toilets !

Why? Presumably you flushed them after they were last used.

We're on holiday now and will be home tomorrow afternoon.

We'll have a cup of tea, feed the cats then cuddle them and promise never to go away again.

Probably takeaway for tea as we've no food in.

NailsHairNipsHeels · 08/11/2024 14:06

Coffee and washing on.

I got in at 0330 this year and the washing machine was earth on before I got a couple hours sleep

starfishmummy · 08/11/2024 14:11

Cuppa for me and a rest. DH likes to stretch his legs and walk to the local shops for stuff for dinner.
DS - who js an adult with SN - likes to bring me any post thst has arrived in our absence, although these days jts not as much as it used to be!

ThatsNotMyTeen · 08/11/2024 14:14

Go to the loo

Can't believe people do laundry on holiday.

I get one holiday a year....there's no way I'm doing the washing on it. I'd rather have a huge pile when I get home.

20 mins cycle in the machine and if it a hot country (which is always is for me) it's dried in a couple of hours max Vs trying to find space in my flat in Scotland, where it takes days to dry on a clothes horse.

ginasevern · 08/11/2024 14:47

Put the heating on and have a glass of wine - although not at 9.30am.

Rocknrollstar · 08/11/2024 14:49

I usually unpack and put the washing on before I have a cup of tea.

soupmaker · 08/11/2024 14:50

@Comedycook like @Plump82 we live in Scotland, I don't have a tumble dryer, and I spend less than half an hour on a 10 day holiday actually doing the laundry.

unsync · 08/11/2024 15:15

Open the water stopcock, put the boiler on, get the milk from the freezer, put the kettle on. Feel regret at being back in the UK and work out when I can next leave.

TheNoodlesIncident · 08/11/2024 15:26

Passports back in their usual storage place, kettle on, unpack suitcases and put the clothes away. Update Word document about holiday packing so anything that didn't work, things that worked well, anything that needs actioning before next holiday (damaged suitcase etc), if I forgot to take anything. Next time we go away I will have forgotten about these things so it's a pertinent reminder. (It also has notes about passport renewal dates etc, so I don't have to dig them out to check).

I don't need to do laundry, windows already open, plants have been looked after, post has been recycled or propped up for our attention, so really it's time for a circuit around the garden looking at the leafy inmates and seeing how they've fared while we've been away. And pondering getting the mower out if the lawn resembles a field.

Itsamumslife2024 · 08/11/2024 15:27

Shower, pj’s and then put on the kettle

Run the kitchen tap for a bit, put the kettle on, open windows.

Run the kitchen tap?

I do this, we’re between two homes at the moment and when we get to either I run it to get rid of lurgies 🤣 my husband and the plumber have told me it doesn’t work like that, the supply is from the mains but I still find myself doing it.

Ahhhhh I get it haha. I run the tap before putting it in the kettle 😂
