My dog broke my husbands 4K (cost!) TV

I have to start this by saying… I told him not to buy it. But… he works hard and he is a brilliant husband / dad and basically he wanted one thing in the whole house.

So it’s on the wall, and it’s beautiful (I don’t see the difference) and today our dog sees (on Dog TV YouTube that we play for her)… a dog.

She is interested in dogs above all else. She runs. She jumps. She cracks the TV.

It’s not her fault. She’s a dog that saw a dog.

What TF do I do here? My husband is so upset (he really is amazing and this was his tech baby)… but he’s SO upset.

I can’t afford to replace this TV.

I also made a huge campaign for not getting this TV (because I don’t care for this stuff) but I worry it feels disingenuous.

Umm…. That’s it right. I have to replace it?

Do you have accidental damage on your house insurance? I'd go that route first.

DancingNotDrowning · 08/11/2024 00:27

Surely if you have a £4k TV that you cannot afford to replace then you have insurance to cover exactly this issue.

in this instance “you” means your household

Why is it your fault?

This is what insurance is for...

Why is it your fault?

Well she says it's HER dog.

@Florally dont you have it listed separately on your contents insurance??

how high was it mounted??

I don't do separate money , but is irrelevant as I'd have it listed separately on our contents insurance.

Tallerandtall · 08/11/2024 02:05

@Florally

get a Hisense cheap one from
curreys and pay for it 50 a month.
then get insurance

Dartmoorcheffy · 08/11/2024 02:21

Hopefully there is insurance. Our dogs knocked our tv over recently. Replaced within the week on an insurance claim.

Ilovelifeverymuch · 08/11/2024 02:24

Are people spending £4k on TVs especially given how prices of large screen TVs have fallen over the years?

kittensinthekitchen · 08/11/2024 02:31

£4,000 on a television??

This is why dogs shouldn't be allowed in cinemas

Elderflower14 · 08/11/2024 02:34

Please please tell us it was insured??? 😕

TwinklyNight · 08/11/2024 02:39

Your insurance should cover it. Not sure why you feel responsible, it was the dog who did it.

Your dog, his TV, you replacing...

It's a lot easier when people act like they're married and make joint decisions about things. In this case you (plural) bought something you (plural) couldn't afford to replace so you (plural) needed insurance in case you (plural) had an accident.

adorablecat · 08/11/2024 03:30
  1. Home insurance
  2. Keep dog out of TV room in future
  3. Train dog to cope with the fact that other dogs exist. Other dogs manage it.
Womblewife · 08/11/2024 04:10

contents insurance will cover this.

Branster · 08/11/2024 04:29

Apparently dogs get really interested and often hyped up at HD TVs , it's a recent phenomenon. So not impossible for a dog to get too close to a TV screen and damage it. And theses screens nowadays are as thin as cardboard, waiting to break.
I hope your DH has insurance for his TV. Or maybe you have a joint contents insurance, or maybe your dog has some insurance that might cover such damage.
Why is it your dog and his TV?!

BobnLen · 08/11/2024 04:37

Maybe they have that really cheap insurance that always comes on comparison sites that only covers the basics, not accidental damage by animals, often things like this are an add on.

LikeARunnerHo · 08/11/2024 04:43

If they had contents insurance, do you honestly think the OP would be on here asking whether she needs to replace it or not?🤦‍♀️

This. Presuming they don't have contents insurance. Madness if so

Probably got a basic contents insurance, some don't cover any accidental damage, damage by pets is often an add on anyway

Aurorora · 08/11/2024 05:09

House insurance?

HallidayJones6779 · 08/11/2024 05:11

Ah OP, my first thought is… dog tv? Really? I definitely wouldn’t bother with that ever again.

Hopefully you can see if your insurance will cover it. I know other posters are saying that ‘surely you would think to use the insurance before posting here’ but I probably wouldn’t think of it - so hopefully it’s a solution for you!

if that fails, I think you need to work out what you want to do about the TV with DH… I think you should both try to replace it if he loves it that much. But maybe it’ll take a bit of time… and deffo get insurance!

oakleaffy · 08/11/2024 05:25

Most dogs know that a screen dog is definitely not a real dog!
They can tell by the smell for starters.

A Puppy might be initially confused by a mirror , nosing it as the ''Mirror puppy'' mimics them .
