My dog broke my husbands 4K (cost!) TV

Florally · 08/11/2024 00:21

I have to start this by saying… I told him not to buy it. But… he works hard and he is a brilliant husband / dad and basically he wanted one thing in the whole house.

So it’s on the wall, and it’s beautiful (I don’t see the difference) and today our dog sees (on Dog TV YouTube that we play for her)… a dog.

She is interested in dogs above all else. She runs. She jumps. She cracks the TV.

It’s not her fault. She’s a dog that saw a dog.

What TF do I do here? My husband is so upset (he really is amazing and this was his tech baby)… but he’s SO upset.

I can’t afford to replace this TV.

I also made a huge campaign for not getting this TV (because I don’t care for this stuff) but I worry it feels disingenuous.

Umm…. That’s it right. I have to replace it?

He is your DH and you have DC together so it is a family dog at this point. Your husband lives in a house with a pet and children, there was always a risk it could get broken so if important to him it should be insured. This is not your fault or problem to solve. He can try claiming on your home insurance. It not he'll have to go without or get a cheaper TV for now.

ThunderLeaf · 08/11/2024 10:28

My first thought like a previous poster was a bit surprised at dog TV.

If you've all got things separate and it's your dog that broke his TV. I think you should replace it.

It's your dog that you are putting on dog TV for. You were using his TV too.

Sounds all a bit disjointed to me.

If you don’t have it covered by house insurance I’d go to the shop it was bought from or the main agents in this country and push that it was not fit for the purpose if it was broken so easily.

Keep up a dialogue and don’t accept no for an answer. After a while they may come up with an offer, perhaps a repair or a new one at much reduced cost. This has worked for us, stay pleasant and trusting they will sort it for you!

oh, and goodly the make and model to see if lots of other people have had them break, if so use this as ammunition

What part of the 'purpose' is defined on it being hit?

Never going to win that argument.

So you make a joint decision to play dog Youtube for your dog, on your husband’s TV that you don’t see the difference in. Dog YouTube is absolutely not needed and if you can’t see the point of the new TV I can’t see why you’re suggesting dog tv and if it’s not your husband’s dog, I again don’t see why he is saying you should play dog tv. You both know that the dog is excited by other dogs and still it’s collectively a good idea to play dog YouTube?

The TV is wall mounted but not high enough to stop dog breaking it? Yet this is a house with a dog and kids. Our TV is higher than it should be but it’s because we don’t want it breaking and we have dogs and a kid. If you have anything nice and want to keep it nice, don’t put it where pets and animals can reach it. And don’t play dog YouTube on it.

Regardless if your dog, his TV it seems like joint decisions of playing dog YouTube and not putting the TV high enough up on the wall are the reason this happened. If finances are separate then it should be 50/50.

stayathomer · 08/11/2024 10:36

If it’s a new tv then would it be on insurance? I thought you have to ring them and put it on?

potatocakesinprogress · 08/11/2024 10:46

Ilovelifeverymuch · 08/11/2024 02:24

Are people spending £4k on TVs especially given how prices of large screen TVs have fallen over the years?

I spent £5k on mine (reduced from £6k in a sale). It came with a soundbar and the latest Samsung phone. It's great.

You don't need a Porsche when you can buy a Skoda, but people still buy Porsches.

potatocakesinprogress · 08/11/2024 10:46

Dog should pay it back, take £1 a week out of its toy fund until cost recouped.

Itisjustmyopinion · 08/11/2024 10:48

I can’t get by the first sentence you told him not to buy it? If my DH told me I couldn’t buy something then he would be told where to go

But then we don’t sign up for the whole my money is our money thinking that a lot of people on here do

As others have said if there is no insurance then yes it will need to be replaced and if you take sole financial responsibility for the dog then that falls on you

What purpose exactly do you propose this television has not fulfilled?

Why do so many people throw around this phrase like it means anything - if OP had bought a wall mount and the tv fell off the wall then sure, the mount isn't fit for purpose. A tv being broken when an animal hit it with force doesn't suggest that at all.

Quite. It’s akin to stealing.

FrostFlowers2025 · 08/11/2024 10:57

Why is it "your" dog and "his" tv. Surely, pets are family pets and big items like tv's are family property. Why is your relationship dynamic so separate?

Have you seen how high some jobs can jump?

Cantbebotheredwithausername · 08/11/2024 11:01

If you're married and live together, how come it's not a family dog, a family TV and a joint decision whether or not to spend family money on a new TV to replace the one your family dog accidently broke?

Does your insurance cover accidental damage to electronics? We have an insurance that covers accidental damage to all our electronics - however stupidly we may have acted. I once accidently spilled an entire freshly made cup of tea with plenty of sugar and milk directly onto the keyboard of my laptop. Covered by insurance. And none of our electronics are worth 4k individually. It seems silly to spend 4k on a TV without insuring it. If your husband chose to do that in a home with a dog, I would say it's on him, and you don't need to spend money you don't have to replace it.

StormingNorman · 08/11/2024 11:03

My mind is boggling at all the comments making this the DH’s fault for daring to spend his money on an expensive TV.

Would it be the same response if the OP had bought the TV as a lovely gift for the family and DH let his dog jump into it? Or would he be a bastard who has no respect for OP’s property and needs to train his dog better?

Presumably the large bouncy dog isn't a surprise to him?

I think I'd cry if I sat down in front of a 6 grand television and there was nothing I wanted to watch.

A visiting dog objected to a talking Bulldog cartoon character, dressed in the Union Jack on mine. Knocked it flying off its stand, full force with his front feet.

The £400 heap of plastic survived, me struggling to heave it up from the back of the cabinet, all while repeatedly asking the dog why he'd done such a thing!

Even my threat to the environment has accidental damage insurance, added on for next to nothing when purchased from JLP. The dog was even nuttier at the time of purchase.

StormingNorman · 08/11/2024 10:58

Have you seen how high some jobs can jump?

Yes, which is why my TV is very high on the wall and why I wouldn’t play something that would excite a dog. As covered in my post.

StormingNorman · 08/11/2024 11:28

Fluufer · 08/11/2024 11:24

Or to OP whose dog it is.

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/11/2024 11:28

Can you get insurance now as a new tv and claim in a month

But wow at £4k for a tv

And wow at dog YouTube

Tho didn't it occur to you if dog is keen on other dogs and gets excited that watching a show about dogs for dogs may have made him excitable and jumpy

Fluufer · 08/11/2024 11:29

StormingNorman · 08/11/2024 11:28

Or to OP whose dog it is.

Which is why she didn't buy a silly TV...

You mean commit insurance fraud?

dorsetdoll · 08/11/2024 11:30

You do need to find a way to replace or repair the telly OP

But these threads never fail to amaze me with all the comments about 'why is it your dog and his telly'

Because guess what, when you live with someone, have chilcren with them and/or get married you dont suddenly because fused into one person, you still identify with and own different things, you still have financial independence and personal income (if both work).

This laptop Im using is mine, not shared with OH, its my laptop. My car is my own. My income is my own etc etc.

At some point in the future I plan on getting a fancy knife set (yes I know my life is very exciting), those will be my knives, he wont be allowed to touch them having ruined every knife we own by putting them in the dishwasher despite me asking him not to. My very own knives. Lovely. He can continue to have access to the blunt shit knives in the drawer.

StormingNorman · 08/11/2024 11:38

Fluufer · 08/11/2024 11:29

And why it is her dog to train.
