My dog broke my husbands 4K (cost!) TV

Florally · 08/11/2024 00:21

I have to start this by saying… I told him not to buy it. But… he works hard and he is a brilliant husband / dad and basically he wanted one thing in the whole house.

So it’s on the wall, and it’s beautiful (I don’t see the difference) and today our dog sees (on Dog TV YouTube that we play for her)… a dog.

She is interested in dogs above all else. She runs. She jumps. She cracks the TV.

It’s not her fault. She’s a dog that saw a dog.

What TF do I do here? My husband is so upset (he really is amazing and this was his tech baby)… but he’s SO upset.

I can’t afford to replace this TV.

I also made a huge campaign for not getting this TV (because I don’t care for this stuff) but I worry it feels disingenuous.

Umm…. That’s it right. I have to replace it?

Is your poor pooch ok?

Hope there isn’t a large vet bill for injured dog.

Do you not have insurance?

Each to their own, but honestly, I cannot envisage being in a marriage like this.

To be honest it's difficult to say what you should do, because presumably you too are in agreement to this complete separate finances set up.

Therefore, yes, you should do something about replacing the TV. This is one of the downsides to the way you do things.

Had "his tv" fallen and hurt "your dog" then presumably he would have expected him to pay the vet bills or cover the next insurance.

Ummm, this set up seems to get more complicated the more I think of it, because maybe your choice to get a dog is a higher liability than a Tv, so how would we work out the insurance issue 😆🤷‍♀️

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 08/11/2024 06:40

House insurance should be your first call. I don’t have anything I can’t replace but if I had something expensive id have accidental cover, we did when dh was alive as we had so many items worth over £1.5k.

Shardlake63 · 08/11/2024 06:41

Your household contents insurance should cover this.
There will probably be an excess to be deducted, but it will be a lot less than 4K!

BobnLen · 08/11/2024 06:51

If it is £4k it would probably need to be named separately on the insurance, on our insurance everything over £3k has to be named separately and on some it is very low at £1.5k so very likely to not be covered.

Missing the point, but what?

If they had contents insurance, do you honestly think the OP would be on here asking whether she needs to replace it or not?🤦‍♀️

Probably yes

ReadingInTheRain583 · 08/11/2024 07:07

If you don't have insurance for it (we have separate insurance policies for specific high value specialist things e.g. camera equipment has its own policy) was it bought recently enough that he may have purchased 12months cover when he bought it? My husband always gets the additional cover that is offered then forgets to cancel after the initial year. Was very grateful for this when the washing machine exploded!

frozendaisy · 08/11/2024 07:10

Yes OP you need to replace it somehow.

And afterwards play dogtv on a laptop and mount 4k tv higher

Because you might have been against he tv to start with but you then were happy to play tv on it for your dog

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 08/11/2024 07:23

@Florally not sure that insurance covers damage done by dogs!! is there not usually a get out clause for that?

WannabeMathematician · 08/11/2024 07:26

4K is a measure of pixel density not a cost! They are expensive but not necessarily four thousand pounds.

It says '4K (cost)' on the thread title.

YouveGotAFastCar · 08/11/2024 07:30

Why on earth are you putting dog TV on for a dog reactive dog?

Yeah, you need to replace it.

I suspect posters are going with it being worth £4k because the OP specified this was the cost in her thread title 🙄

WhatASadLittleLifeJayne · 08/11/2024 07:34

Wow must be a massive dog to be able to whack a wall-mounted telly high and hard enough to crack it!

Is your dog a nightmare on walks if they go mad seeing other dogs? Why is it just your dog? Hopefully telly is insured? So
many questions.

on Dog TV YouTube that we play for her

Missing the point, but what?

There are channels on yt that are just dogs running around and playing. Our dog loves it. Like pp said, dogs can see hd TV in a way they couldn't see older TV. Channels with squirrels and birds are also popular in our house but maybe a bit too exciting.

liveforsummer · 08/11/2024 07:41

Surely it would be cheaper to repair a 4K tv rattle than replace?

Doingmybest12 · 08/11/2024 07:47

If you know your dog likes and reacts to dogs on TV like this and can jump up high enough then this was going to happen. Can you as a couple afford to replace it, if not then get a cheaper one. Upsetting ,annoying but it seems to be more about how you make decisions and how you manage finances rather than the incident. And perhaps don't stimulate your dog in this way if you can't supervise this. Seems like something that could cause high stress levels for dogs but looking like fun.

Are people spending £4k on TVs especially given how prices of large screen TVs have fallen over the years?

It will (I assume) be an OLED TV. They're really pricey, but the picture quality is amazing and they do look beautiful. I was shopping for a TV a couple of months ago - a 48 inch OLED (last year's model) was £1k. 😱

I think @Ilovelifeverymuch is right though, a TV that would cost that much money is hard to find to be honest & it would be huge. I think the OP is confused as to what 4k means...

I am not sure she is confused. Even just a quick look on John Lewis shows TVs up to 7.5k, there are many models at 4k or above (price)

Attelina · 08/11/2024 08:40

Why would you not insure it or your house contents?

I also think it's odd that the tv is his and the dog is toured yet you are married!

Are the forks his and the knives yours? Bizarre.

Jessie1259 · 08/11/2024 08:56

TBH I struggle to have sympathy for anyone who spends 4k on a tv - what a waste of money. You need to replace it, but just get a sensibly priced tv.
