My dog broke my husbands 4K (cost!) TV

Florally · 08/11/2024 00:21

I have to start this by saying… I told him not to buy it. But… he works hard and he is a brilliant husband / dad and basically he wanted one thing in the whole house.

So it’s on the wall, and it’s beautiful (I don’t see the difference) and today our dog sees (on Dog TV YouTube that we play for her)… a dog.

She is interested in dogs above all else. She runs. She jumps. She cracks the TV.

It’s not her fault. She’s a dog that saw a dog.

What TF do I do here? My husband is so upset (he really is amazing and this was his tech baby)… but he’s SO upset.

I can’t afford to replace this TV.

I also made a huge campaign for not getting this TV (because I don’t care for this stuff) but I worry it feels disingenuous.

Umm…. That’s it right. I have to replace it?

So your shared dog broke your shared TV yet your husband expects you to cover the cost? Bit weird.

TBH I struggle to have sympathy for anyone who spends 4k on a tv - what a waste of money. You need to replace it, but just get a sensibly priced tv.

I struggle to sympathise with anyone who spends 4k on a TV and doesn't insure it. It's utter stupidly.

KitsyWitsy · 08/11/2024 09:01

Bloody hell. 4K on a television….!

You must have contents insurance so use that. If you don’t, you have no business spending that much on a tv.

I think @Ilovelifeverymuch is right though, a TV that would cost that much money is hard to find to be honest & it would be huge. I think the OP is confused as to what 4k means...

The last TV set up my FIL bought was £15k. Absolutely insane but £4k for a TV isn’t too out there if you love all the tech that goes into them.

StormingNorman · 08/11/2024 09:09

OP you need to replace it like for like or get it repaired.

It’s not for you to decide to get a cheaper one because he spent a silly amount of money as a PP had suggested. That’s not your judgement to make.

And as you have separate possessions and finances, it’s not for him to pay for damage caused by your dog.

Fingers crossed your house insurance will cover it. I would be gutted in your shoes to have to pay for this. x

coffeesaveslives · 08/11/2024 09:25

Why was the TV in a location where the dog could reach it and destroy it in the first place, and who decided it was a good idea to play "dog TV" on it?

While the incident wasn't the dogs' fault as such, the kind of behaviour you describe isn't normal and I suspect it's not the first time she's reacted to another dog on the TV?

I assume you don't have insurance otherwise you'd not be on here asking about payment to begin with?

Lifeisarealchallenge · 08/11/2024 09:26

It's threads like this that make me question reality.
Do I really live in a world where people think it' not only normal to pay £4k for a tv but also normal to play specific tv programmes for their dog?
This on top of the thread where having your shower out of action for a short time isn't just an inconvenience it's apparently regarded as the end of the world by some.

Fwiw I don't see how you are to blame or how the dog is to blame but if he spent that amount of money and didn't make sure he had insurance to cover it then it's his own fault and he should deal with the situation.

Tumbler2121 · 08/11/2024 09:28

If you don’t have it covered by house insurance I’d go to the shop it was bought from or the main agents in this country and push that it was not fit for the purpose if it was broken so easily.

Keep up a dialogue and don’t accept no for an answer. After a while they may come up with an offer, perhaps a repair or a new one at much reduced cost. This has worked for us, stay pleasant and trusting they will sort it for you!

oh, and goodly the make and model to see if lots of other people have had them break, if so use this as ammunition

PandoraSox · 08/11/2024 09:31

Did he buy it on a credit card? How long ago? Usually goods are covered for 90 days, I think?

Not sure of OP is coming back...

Fluufer · 08/11/2024 09:49

He should have insured it shouldn't he?
A £4k tv when you've got kids and a dog is stupid.
I also think your dog, his expensive TV is odd when you're married with kids.
Not a chance in hell would either of us be replacing it. £8k on televisions! Absolute lunacy.

JustWicked · 08/11/2024 09:51

That is what insurance is for

Ilovelifeverymuch · 08/11/2024 02:24

Are people spending £4k on TVs especially given how prices of large screen TVs have fallen over the years?

A 4K TV is not necessarily one that costs 4 thousand pounds. 4k means a particular type of TV.

295bkq · 08/11/2024 09:52

You can get a 4k TV for a few hundred quid, not 4 grand

yes. My dh’s dream tv is about this. I’m working on persuading him to go for the 2k one.
he’s really into tech and his argument is that it’s one of the most utilised things in the house so it’s worth spending money on

Llttledrummergirl · 08/11/2024 09:53

My Our dog broke my husbands our 4K (cost!) TV.

Fixed this bit for you. Insurance should fix the T.V.

You clearly don't know much about tvs.

295bkq · 08/11/2024 09:54

Oh hell, I see the OP does actually mean 4 grand Shock

Isobel201 · 08/11/2024 09:55

I paid £240 for a 42 inch QLED Toshiba...

Is this not a 4K TV for a few hundred quid?

LG 43QNED80T6A (2024) QNED HDR 4K Ultra HD Smart TV, 43 inch with Freeview Play/Freesat HD, Ashed Blue

Farfarout · 08/11/2024 09:56

More importantly, how is the dog?

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 08/11/2024 09:57

If you don’t have it covered by house insurance I’d go to the shop it was bought from or the main agents in this country and push that it was not fit for the purpose if it was broken so easily.

What purpose exactly do you propose this television has not fulfilled?

Why do so many people throw around this phrase like it means anything - if OP had bought a wall mount and the tv fell off the wall then sure, the mount isn't fit for purpose. A tv being broken when an animal hit it with force doesn't suggest that at all.

TheTigerWhoCameToEatMyArsehole · 08/11/2024 09:58

@295bkq

Yes a low quality nano led tv. Picture quality will be crap compared to a 4grand tv not to mention sound quality.

User364837 · 08/11/2024 10:01

what kind of marriage is it if it’s YOUR dog and HIS tv and YOURS or HIS money? Isn’t all of it both of yours?

Daschund · 08/11/2024 10:02

It's madness with a dog capable of that, that you don't have appropriate insurance (I assume you don't because you wouldn't be here if you did).
In our family regardless of who wants something like that (a TV wouldn't be seen as mine and yours, it'd be ours) it would be replaced from family funds. The dogs were gifts to me but they're seen very much as our family pets. I would never have to pay for anything for them myself, we're married and a family.

Diomi · 08/11/2024 10:19

You can’t really criticise him for spending money on a tv. Dogs cost more over their lifetime, especially when they damage expensive tvs!
