Pudding or Dessert - which one is 'posher'?

Sitting watching Bake Off with DH and Alison Hammond has commented in a joking way to Paul Hollywood that he calls dessert 'pudding' instead. DH and I have been debating on whether the word dessert is posher than pudding. What's your thoughts on this vital topic of discussion??

Agree, but I was quoting Nancy Mitford, as she specifically mentioned pudding in this context in the 1950s.

Oh, it wasn't a criticism. I think it should have a comeback. Lovely, quaint term.

Smart people say pudding.
I only know one v wealthy upper class person and he says pudding. Also scent instead of perfume.

Pumpkincozynights · 05/11/2024 21:28

I agree that both the working and upper classes call it pudding.

Pudding is a type of dessert, normally goes well with custard

Cynic17 · 05/11/2024 21:29

Pudding. Obviously. Does nobody know their Jilly Cooper? 😂

Pumpkincozynights · 05/11/2024 21:29

Same with scent.

Coconutter24 · 05/11/2024 21:29

I say pudding and always thought dessert was a posh way of saying pudding

vegaspot · 05/11/2024 21:29

I come from a very privileged background and we always said next course, living room and loo rather than toilet..if that helps!

Supersimkin7 · 05/11/2024 21:29

Pudding.

Dessert/sweet = ghastly. Sweet what?

Any word that sounds like it could be a bit posh or French eg dessert &, say, serviette rather than good ol’ napkin, is cringeingly common.

Toffs like bluff straightforward self-expression (and foxing try-hard plebs).

Gonegirl7 · 05/11/2024 21:33

Pudding is posh. Dessert is common.

its also like saying pardon is common and posh is actually saying ‘what?’ when you miss something someone has said.

also disagree with a few in a previous image posted. It’s posher to say wealthy and not rich.

Inanni · 05/11/2024 21:34

I use both. Pudding for things like crumble and custard and dessert for cheesecake and the like but I think pudding sounds posher.

Blueyanddougie · 05/11/2024 21:34

Napkins and serviettes are different things though. That's all I have to add to this debate.

BobbyBiscuits · 05/11/2024 21:37

@Pistachiochiochio haha! Maybe it sounds like someone from Fawlty Towers or something?

BCBird · 05/11/2024 21:38

Nature speaker, yet i still seem ignorant on the nuances of my language. For me a pudfing is domrthung substantial like roly poly or crumble -whereas a dessert is something less substantial, e.g. a mousse or a piece of gateau

Leftleg · 05/11/2024 21:41

We always called it pudding and definitely not posh. I always thought dessert was posh as you'd have dessert when out for a meal.
I have always thought of puddings as things like apple crumble, bread and butter pudding, rice pudding etc, and dessert would be the posher puddings at a restaurant.

PineappleCoconut · 05/11/2024 21:41

Pudding or just pud
My dear departed father also refused to allow us to call it the living room, or lounge. It was the drawing room, always.

Please longing to know what what is a WC

Pudding is definitely posher. Or 'sweet'. I've heard very posh people calling it the 'sweet'.

When you read about this type of thing (see the Mitford reference above) "sweet" is very much NOT posh.
I say this as someone who grew up in East Lancs and said "sweet" instead of pudding or dessert throughout my childhood!

I think pudding is posher than dessert.

HauntedPencil · 05/11/2024 21:44

Pudding

BobbyBiscuits · 05/11/2024 21:45

@dollopofsauce haha, maybe I got that wrong but I think the person was really snobby then lol.
Pudding is definitely posher than dessert. My auntie taught me that. She was from a housing estate in Hastings but thought she was the queen of Sheba! 🙄🤣

AdaColeman · 05/11/2024 21:50

It's always pudding here, no matter if it's steamed syrup sponge, rhubarb fool or Dame Blanche.

Clevs · 05/11/2024 22:01

Dessert is posher. We say pudding at home and dessert when eating out.

Carouselfish · 05/11/2024 22:04

Pudding is posher.

nomorehocuspocus · 05/11/2024 22:04

Pudding = hot.
Dessert = cold.

Yes a serviette is one of those flimsy things that you take out of a dispenser in a caff
