Whatever I post. Reliable, deeply researched, beautifully composed and occasionally funny.

Be a bit more specific

You don't read the Guardian, so what do you read?

Now that is actually funny. Only believe what I post, folks!

I think usually I don’t mind the left right differences on here. But that Reeves thread really pissed me off.

One poster said she effectively made the tea at the BoE. I don’t where to start. Not only is it very sexist and regressive, it’s such a big insult to any professional woman, and shows the posters ignorance of the BoE (I’ve known a few economists who worked there who were always excellent). A real low point - make an argument on what she does or doesn’t, but this sexism is terrible.

It's especially annoying because it's so far from the truth. Nasty.

The Times, Economist, New Statesman, Spectator and Take a Break.

Piggywaspushed · 17/11/2024 10:18

You missed off Mumsnet.

ContactNightmare · 17/11/2024 10:21

Oh come on - all newspapers have their biases. They are designed to cater to groups. Read a diverse range and you get a better picture.

I read the Spectator and the New Statesman. This used to be standard stuff for an educated middle class rather than being so blinded by ideology that you couldn’t even acknowledge other ideas.

Zonder · 17/11/2024 10:21

Rummly · 17/11/2024 10:17

The Times, Economist, New Statesman, Spectator and Take a Break.

So RW, centrist, LW, RW, dross.

Is it me, or has MN been a bit barking mad the last couple of days?

In fairness it hasnt just been MN and it hasnt just been the last couple of days. But Trump's success has obviously livened up a few of the more aggressive posters.

I read the Reeves thread. It was highly amusing that so few of the most vociferous posters hadn't bothered to read the 'source' and therefore posted drivel unrelated to the opening post.

I had a week without reading the news. It was very pleasant.

(I've been reading The Times every day for decades and really most of it is fantastic partisan dross. Unfortunately it seems to be habit)

Notonthestairs · 17/11/2024 10:32

Honestly havent forgiven the Spectator for printing the grim article from LLoyd Evans about Professor Lea Ypi.

That’s a bit harsh. Take a Break has higher editorial standards than the Guardian.

I left off Private Eye. That’s a must read. The only blemish is the absolute bollocks they keep printing about the trial of Lucy Letby.

Anyway, the Graun will be bust soon enough. The Observer looks like it’s for the chop already. That is a bit sad, mind; it’s very ancient.

I'd hardly call the Spectator reliable, deeply researched and beautifully composed. Remember this piece?

https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/my-surprisingly-decent-proposal/

Some of the Spectator is wish fulfillment. I would expect it to be quite nice about Kemi Badenoch for the next six months for example. Likewise the Telegraph. I don’t expect it to post positive stuff on Reeves or Starmer, but the reality is that they will often write articles which suggest that the normal ebb and flow of politics is much worse than it is because it suits them. The Conservatives have just been hammered electorally.

The best journalist writing on politics currently is Andrew Marr. He really does know the right people. He was also very accurate about what Labour would do, and the failures of Tories a year before the last election. He’s in the NS.

Well he did a hatchet job on Badenoch this week so you can’t call him captive. A very unflattering portrait he painted of her.

DuncinToffee · 17/11/2024 10:44

The Spectator is now owned by Paul Marshall

You don't need to explain yourself. We've understood you now.

Andrew Marr on the budget. At least a fair summary of the motivations and risks being taken.

The Times, Economist, New Statesman, Spectator and Take a Break.

And how do you get the political balance in your reading? Most of us here will look at any source, even if we don't agree with its overall political stance.

LittleBowSheep · 17/11/2024 12:47

Rummly · 17/11/2024 10:03

That’ll be the same Guardian that had to pull a review of a programme about the Oct 7 atrocity, because it was blatantly antisemitic?

Good choice of source. 👍

Why do so many posters on here read the Guardian? It’s an embarrassment.

Whereas the Telegraph is a shining example of literary excellence? Yeah, sure.

ContactNightmare · 17/11/2024 12:50

I’ve rather enjoyed the Telegraph and it’s totally over the top posturing. Currently there is a picture of Badenoch standing in front of some agricultural equipment. Plus Alison Pearson, and Toby Young of the Free Speech Union on page 1.

Saucery · 17/11/2024 12:59

I was taught at school over 35 years ago to read widely but to understand the angle and bias of whatever news I was reading.

I enjoy it. Alistair Heath’s rants are particularly entertaining.

I don’t read the Telegraph. I distrust what it writes unless it’s widely published elsewhere.

I recommend you do the same with the Guardian.
