All this chat has inspired me to read The Morning Star just now - It was refreshing to read a different viewpoint.

PandoraSox · 17/11/2024 14:04

The Allison Pearson story is confusing me. There are people on Twitter saying the tweet concerned was from a different Allison Pearson, others saying that isn't the case.

DuncinToffee · 17/11/2024 14:13

I think that refers to this tweet from her

Somebody’s being dishonest in this story. Could be any of the people involved.

I wonder what checks the Guardian made. I wonder who the ‘apolitical’ and ‘disinterested’ civil servant is.

DuncinToffee · 17/11/2024 15:21

I hope you also wonder what checks the Telegraph made

cardibach · 17/11/2024 15:21

Dear God there’s another bonkers thread about Starmer. And I accidentally posted on it instead of sitting on my hands or watching a good film.

Me too.

DuncinToffee · 17/11/2024 15:28

I have reported it as the trial is ongoing and is just speculation

Is that the one about the cat that sat on a mat while Keir had a beer meeting a man on a stair who wasn't there ?

Might as well be…

cardibach · 17/11/2024 16:07

It’s been deleted. Which no doubt has loads of posters fuming about being gagged.

PandoraSox · 17/11/2024 16:07

ilovesooty · 17/11/2024 15:25

Me too.

Me three. It is gone now.

DuncinToffee · 17/11/2024 16:11

Good, they can go scuttle back to x

Notonthestairs · 17/11/2024 16:14

I understand why it needed to be deleted.
But there was some absolute nonsense spouted on it that deserved to remain up for all to read. Starmer's work on the JR challenging the then Labour government's Immigration legislation is very well known and was widely reported about at the time.

BIWI · 17/11/2024 16:34

Out of interest, who started that thread? I missed it. Was it (another) a new poster?

DuncinToffee · 17/11/2024 16:34

I am sure people would have found fault with a lawyer saving his clients from the risk of destitution on that thread.

It wasn't meant for sensible conversation

Yes, only started posting under that name yesterday.

BIWI · 17/11/2024 16:36

Quelle surprise Hmm

cakeorwine · 17/11/2024 17:14

With all these "new posters", "new threads" etc going on, I'm reading a couple of books on psychology - all about biases, persuasion etc

I was reading one of the chapters and the Brexit campaign came to mind. All about anchoring, the persuasive power of stories (instead of actual facts), and how people are very likely to stick to and defend their choices no matter what changes.

"You're not so smart" by David McRaney

Fascinating stuff. Of course, I would say that I am not the kind of person to fall for such biases, but then most people would say that....

SerendipityJane · 17/11/2024 17:27

Meanwhile councils will be allowed to run bus services again.

Elodie09 · 17/11/2024 17:52

I am loving the awesome, ever vigilant fact checking people on this thread.
@cakeorwine Sounds very interesting reading.

PickAChew · 17/11/2024 17:58

SerendipityJane · 17/11/2024 17:27

Meanwhile councils will be allowed to run bus services again.

Now that is excellent news. Some of the companies that are contracted to run secured services seem to care very little about sticking to their contracts and providing the service they're paid for.

DuncinToffee · 17/11/2024 18:29

Using Guido Fawkes as a source is fact checking made easy Wink

Notonthestairs · 17/11/2024 18:41

Local authorities in all English regions will be able to introduce new bus routes, make services more frequent and protect crucial routes, the DfT says.
It added the money will allow more urban areas to maintain high levels of service. Meanwhile, rural communities and small towns will be able to offer more services.
