My dog is so distraught

Oldmouse · 04/11/2024 18:46

There have been fireworks going off every evening since late last week. My dog is old and fully blind, he's terrified and barking so much he's gone all croaky.

Just sounding off here really but what is the point of bloody fireworks?! Just F OFF! Surely they are such a waste of money.

God knows what tomorrow evening will be like 😞

Sorry for your dog OP. Here’s what helps mine:
lots of exercise/enrichment in the day to make them tired
Den, with me nearby but own space
several blankets on top of them, especially head/ears
Thundershirt (any close fitting thing will do)
Classic FM on max volume. I do mean max. I’m sick of it after a week but it helps.

if all else fails, for next year/ new year, vet can prescribe. It’ll be about £80-£100 though.

Hope it’s over soon!

Stuff damp cotton wool in his ears and tie on a tee shirt so it is quite tight.

My lab is also scared and won't go out to toilet and is shaking, I just reassure her and comfort her. I don't expect others to not enjoy fireworks, it's a couple of days out of the year and I loved watching them as a child so why would I was to take the joy from other children/family's. I'll be taking my children to see a firework display tomorrow. Fireworks have been around for many years, I don't understand why people moan so much these days.

MidnightPatrol · 04/11/2024 18:53

Might white noise work?

Stillnormal · 04/11/2024 18:58

Sorry to your dog I hate fireworks so much. Best things that’s worked for me had been to have loud music on but also be moving about noisily and noisy vocally myself - your dogs blindness might change the way you need to deal with this though - you have to not sooth them or act unsettled yourself which is hard. Bastards, anyway: I hate fireworks - hopefully it’ll be over soon

Poor baby. My cat has been terrified the last few days too.

thiswaypleasethankyou · 04/11/2024 19:14

Poor little love. Thundershirt or swaddle firmly in a tshirt, taiko drumming volume up loud, or i think Classic FM are doing a specific pets channel or program.. My friend's dog is the same, he has taken the week off work this week and taken her to a cottage in the middle of nowhere as she is so terrified. Can your vet give you anything?

DeliciousApples · 04/11/2024 19:24

We used to put cotton wool in the horses ears to deaden the sound.

Poor animals. They don't understand.
If it were just the one night you wouldn't mind as much but they've been letting them off for a month now.

tsmainsqueeze · 04/11/2024 19:24

I work at a vets ,Sileo is a gel which you squeeze into the inner cheek/gum area, it is used in stressful situations such as fireworks and out of the few products on the veterinary market for anxiety inducing situations i would say this has the best response.
It is a prescription only medicine , if the vet has quite recently seen your dog depending on their protocol they may dispense some for you but also likely they will want to see him to supply it.
If you search it online there are videos telling you how it works and how to give it.

So your dog is shaking and terrified and you're reassuring her... will anyone be with her tomorrow when you take the kids to see the firework display?

This is the problem, people leave their pets at home alone while they go out to watch the fireworks then they wonder why the animal is phobic next time there are fireworks 🙄

I'm sure the dog will read that and immediately be fine.

It would but unfortunately it's blind.

What a nasty comment. Shame on you!

I'm really beginning to think the people who live near me are sharing one single brain cell. They were letting them off yesterday when it was still light- WTAF is the point of that? stupid idiots.

The Sileo gel is a great idea- I'd check this out OP

People like loud noise. It literally is that simple.

MagentaRocks · 04/11/2024 19:55

It’s not just dogs. Mine aren’t too bad if they are far away so can only just hear it but they get upset when it is really loud bangs close by.

But isnt the point of fireworks also that you can see them? you could listen to a YouTube video of loud bangs if it gets your rocks off so much, dont get it!

If you cant wait an extra hour then you are an idiot. It really is that simple

So much wrong about this post and I'm not even talking about the grammar.

Some people like the visuals but theres a healthy demand for loud fireworks. The booms are more exciting to many.

And @MagentaRocks poster is a load of old horse. Fake news.

No it isn’t. This is from the RSPCA.

I do think you are being goady.

We've got Sileo from the vet ready to go for tomorrow for our boy.

Sending love op. It's horrid and so unnecessary. Xx Flowers

bakewellbride · 04/11/2024 20:07

Also we've found nutra calm to be really amazing. 2 tablets a day for ten days. A bit late now but worth looking into for NYE.
