Do you buy chocolates, sweets and nuts etc at Christmas time?

Friend has a large family, not stuck for money and never buys any of the above and never has. Their children are between 26 and 17. Got me wondering if it's quite the norm?

I've never bought sweets or nuts. Chocolate yes

Tooffless · 02/11/2024 19:26

My family always have nuts (whole to crack!) but inlaws never would.

We used to buy quality street but now the chocolate is shit and so are the wrappers.

Error404pagenotfound · 02/11/2024 19:27

We have nuts and chocolates. Not a huge fan of sweets but we do always have a lot of goodies in for Christmas!

WhatsitWiggle · 02/11/2024 19:29

Nuts, chocolates and biscuits. Part of the fun of Christmas!

Gorgonemilezola · 02/11/2024 19:30

Yup - all of the above. We don't really buy them any other time.
Net bag of nuts in shells
Turkish delight
Good fruit jellies
The Lidl knock off Anton Berg marzipan liqueur chocolates
Liquorice allsorts
As above, used to buy Quality Street but not now because of general shiteness and dullness of wrappers.

Marshtit · 02/11/2024 19:31

always walnuts, brazil nuts, tub of chocolates, dates

DisplayPurposesOnly · 02/11/2024 19:34

Whole nuts, dates, yes. (Particular) sweets and chocolates bought as Christmas presents but not generally for having around the house.

Grepes · 02/11/2024 19:35

No, I didn’t realise this was a thing?! I buy sweets and chocolate for Halloween for those that knock on the door. We don’t have that many visitors at Christmas, just family (and we don’t buy sweets/nuts/chocolate especially for Christmas at home, neither do my husband’s family), and for our big Christmas party (friends), we have a savoury food mostly and a couple of desserts.

MilesOfCarpetTiles · 02/11/2024 19:37

We never had the big tins of Quality St/ Roses at Christmas growing up, so they never seemed 'Christmassy'!

We don't really, there are so many other delicious things that I don't buy tins of chocolates - the kids have loads in their stockings and we pig out on cake, posh chocs that we've received as gifts, etc. I do buy the biscuit assortments if people visit and always loads of 'buffet' type snacks. But can't remember ever buying a big tub of Celebrations.

My in-laws brought over tons of pistachios once, that was amazing.

HÆLTHEPAIN · 02/11/2024 19:38

We buy a tub of Quality Street and Roses for when we put the tree and decorations up, then have a few on subsequent nights while watching Christmas films.

We also get some whole nuts in shells to crack and then usually buy a couple of boxes of something to wrap each other but we share them.

Then there’s the chocolate mints for after Christmas dinner.

Marshtit · 02/11/2024 19:38

pistachios are an excellent idea

as a child my stepmum would buy sugared almonds and turkish delight

CalicoPusscat · 02/11/2024 19:41

Definitely nuts chocolates biscuits grapes clementines cheese. Besides, I have the most fantastic nutcracker.

Not much into sweets. But you have to have nibble things around in my opinion.

One of the best things about Christmas is hibernating and eating.

Etincelle · 02/11/2024 19:42

Chocolates, not sweets or nuts.

Isitfridayyetsophie · 02/11/2024 19:44

Growing up we’d probably have a tin of roses/quality street that my dad would have picked up on offer. I do the same now but I’d buy celebrations and the like at any time, not just Christmas. We also always have nuts in the house, I don’t associate them with Christmas.

I generally buy loads of lebkuchen as it’s more readily available at this time of year.

Vanillalattecandle · 02/11/2024 19:47

No nuts but chocolate, sweets and nice biscuits yes.
I love Christmas as there's things we have that we don't have at any other time so always look forward to it.

DrizzleMySwizzle · 02/11/2024 19:50

Imagine never buying a tub of chocolates at Christmas time.

I'd be deeply dubious as to the character of such a person.

Really? Have you never been to a supermarket in the run up to Christmas? There's a whole aisle full of boxes of chocolates and large tubes of sweets, not to mention the stacks of tubs of Quality Street etc.

ChilliHeeler1 · 02/11/2024 19:52

Buy a tub of chocs (& then another one because we always crack and open the “Christmas chocs” way before Christmas) but never buy sweets or nuts.

Franjipanl8r · 02/11/2024 19:53

We don't buy sweets but scoff chocolates and nuts with port at Christmas.

kiraric · 02/11/2024 19:54

Not really. It's not about cost, just not really into sweets.

We buy nice food for the day itself, expensive cheese and wine and a Christmas pudding but not chocolate or sweets to eat more generally

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 02/11/2024 19:54

We have lots of treats. I would never dream of buying crappy tins of chocs though. Tends to be enrobed fruits, marzipan, a selection of chocs from Fortnum's etc.

GroovyChick87 · 02/11/2024 19:55

Chocolates, yes. Nuts, only salted peanuts.

DrizzleMySwizzle · 02/11/2024 19:56

I'm deeply dubious about a person who'd use the phrase 'enrobed fruits'.

🤔

Laptoppie · 02/11/2024 19:57

Yes of course! It was lovely when we were young as parents couldn't afford a lot of chocoalte etc (especially not branded stuff) during the year, so having some was a real treat. We get some now but not loads that then feel obliged to eat.

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 02/11/2024 19:57

Enrobed fruits... what wankery is this Grin
