I've not taken any notice of the Tory leadership contest. And today is the estates day with Kemi being the favourite.

What's she about then?

Ha! I'm in her constituency and would strongly disagree with that. She doesn't spend much time here.

So am I. I wrote to her about a matter and she dealt with it quickly and efficiently.

Shhhthedogssleeping · 02/11/2024 18:40

I’m glad she’s female and black. I’m relieved she is able to define what a woman is. Other than that I’m very concerned about her comments and by extention attitude to ASD. Does she feel this way about groups of people with disabilities? I don’t like her insinuation that there are right and wrong groups of immigrants as if certain races and religions are one homogeneous blob holding the same beliefs, opinions and intentions to Uk. Im getting some Rishi Sunak vibes - My parents were intelligent, driven and were able to ensure I had a life of opportunity and expensive education in the UK therefore this is possible for future generations of all immigrants. My family rose to a high level, so you lot must be able to do it.

I am 2nd generation British and feel very strongly that a lot depends on the bed you’re born in, the cultural attititudes of the family you are from, especially if you are female in some cultures. I’ve not seen much humanity or empathy from her so far. I hope I’m wrong.

MyBeloved · 02/11/2024 18:41

I think she will be an excellent leader of the opposition, who will tie KS in knots

M0ssGreen · 02/11/2024 18:47

EasternStandard · 02/11/2024 18:31

She'll hold Starmer to account and has done well to win the leadership race

She really hasn’t. Declaring maternity pay has gone too far and decrying disabled children getting reasonable adjustments and transport to school alongside printing ableist incorrect literature that she clearly didn’t research beforehand….She just says vile things to appease an awful party. Any fool can do that.

Doubt it going by her performance thus far.

her voting record gives you an idea of what the Tories believe, not what she personally believes. Lots of votes are whipped, MPs have to follow the party line whether they agree or not. That’s just how political parties work. Occasionally an individual MP will make a stand on a subject they feel strongly about but typically they go along with whips because otherwise the party doesn’t have a coherent message.

In a round about way you're saying that she votes like a Tory.

Dobest · 02/11/2024 18:59

Two things must ye know about the Opposition Leader Woman.

First- she is Leader of the Opposition.

Second- she is a woman!

Pleased you got a good result. My experience has been she ignores emails and if/when you eventually get a reply it’s just a cut and paste of the talking points HQ have given her.

I suspect she might be ok at dealing with constituents issues, but she doesn’t like to engage with questions about policy or votes. I always got the impression she wasn’t interested in the views of constituents who might cause her to upset the party line/faithful.

The massive drop in her majority at the last election would indicate she is not well loved by her constituents even in true blue NW Essex. The previous MP was generally well regarded by constituents whether they were Tories or not.

User37482 · 02/11/2024 19:12

I read an article about her, it talked about how because she grew up in a different country she can see a lot about Britain that British people can’t.

It reminds me of my dad, freedom of speech, freedom to protest (he’s been on the receiving end of a police beating) law courts you can’t buy, free education, freedom from nepotism. etc etc all these things he admired about Britain precisely because he grew up without them.

Not saying Britain is perfect, far from it, but theres an optimism there that people who have grown up in different countries sometimes have.

Fuck knows what she’ll actually be like and what her policy platform will actually say though.

I find it's helpful to look at MPs voting history. I use They Work For You Website Here

🙄I'm not sure why you thought you needed to explain how party voting works, your post comes across as patronising.

Boris 2.0 but further right.

To explain why an individuals voting record doesn’t necessarily tell people what they agree with and what they don’t, which is what the pp was suggesting.

RedeemingCreature · 02/11/2024 11:48

She’s sensible on gender stuff, but she’s dreadful on race, sadly …very right wing, very much ‘I did well, why can’t YOU?’

dreadful on race? She's a black woman who doesn't buy into critical race theory, like lots of
people don't. It's a theory. There are lots
of those.

We're going full circle here. I'll concede that the Tories are the progressive party when you tell me their progressive policies.

One of their progressive policies is that a woman is an adult human female and not a collection of stereotypes that men can perform and claim to then be a woman. The latter would obviously be very regressive, but Labour seem to be ok with it.

But she (and one presumes the Tory party ) believes maternity rights have gone too far and autism is a mental illness and disabled children shouldn’t have help with transport to school or reasonable adjustments. Yeah really progressive.

That was a Tory policy? How come men were allowed in toilets, changing rooms, women's sports, refuges and gender ideology was taught in school under the Tories?

I heard her parents are wealthy and that she was an anchor baby born here, and previously made similar types of comments like Lammy/Sunak does about his parents country of birth.

Apart from a return to biological reality, she sounds like more of the same.

I understood she was born here, ie is British by birth, and her parents are professionals (a doctor and a professor of physiology). Not so much an anchor baby but an example of how bright, intelligent and hardworking immigrants can add to British culture and society, especially when they instil those values in their offspring. That her parents are from a science/medical background may explain why she retains an understanding of the biological reality of what a woman is.

But apparently not a biological understanding of what autism is (before publishing literature about her views on it)or the needs of women in work when they have a baby.

SensibleSigma · 02/11/2024 19:34

I find she’s incisive and smart as a whip. She doesn’t fear challenging assumptions. I like her and am looking forward to seeing what she does.

MrsKwazi · 02/11/2024 11:53

She’ll be a breath of fresh air and I have high hopes for her leadership, if they can unite behind her and stop the infighting. She sounds like she has common sense. Go Kemi!

She’s also the second person of colour (in a row), the fourth woman to be leader of the Conservative party, while Labour leaders has been white male oxbridge law types since WWII. Interesting that.

Jeremy Corbin?

Jeremy Corbyn is from a pretty wealthy family. Solid upper middle class. Admittedly he didn't go to Oxbridge.

Absolutely fair challenge. They were hoodwinked by the likes of Stonewall and had realised that and were trying to turn the tanker when a general election was called.

As an AuDHD person and mother of two ASD/AuDHD teens I’ve met quite a few purported experts who seem to know bugger all about autism, so I’ll give her a pass on that one so long as she appoints (shadow)ministers in education, health and social care that do understand it. I also felt she was misreported/deliberately misunderstood on the other issue.
