I've not taken any notice of the Tory leadership contest. And today is the estates day with Kemi being the favourite.

What's she about then?

She's a Tory, trying to win Reform voters back to the fold.

bellinisurge · 02/11/2024 14:39

You have to be "a bit full of yourself " to be elected leader of a party.
I despise her politics but I hope she will hold Labour's feet to the fire on women's rights

BellaBlythe · 02/11/2024 14:47

As others have said plus she did serve on London Assembly, Has always been in Wimbledon area I think. She wrote an essay recently about Bureaucracy stifling progress and particularly not supporting risk taking which is needed to get growth.

LyndaLaHughes · 02/11/2024 15:50

She had made despicable comments about autistic people, is dismissive of mental health issues and the disabled. Has nasty views about which cultures she considers superior and claims to have become working class when working in McDonalds. Has been caught lying more than once and has been accused of bullying many times by previous colleagues. She's abhorrent and will do or say whatever it takes to progress her own career.

@LyndaLaHughes whar did she say about autistic people?

RedeemingCreature · 02/11/2024 15:56

@Icanthinkformyselfthanks

Well, I think it’s a crying shame when one of our few black leaders doesn’t seem to comprehend systemic racism.

She's a Tory, they can't walk in another's shoes (put my feet in there?!). Her parents are successful professionals and she married a rich banker. Therefore she's never struggled and doesn't understand those who have.

@LyndaLaHughes whar did she say about autistic people?

She basically insinuated people who were autistic got economic privileges, special treatment and protection and were prioritised which is so far removed from the truth it's laughable. Also suggested that they needed to work on themselves as if it something that can be fixed and that employers, schools etc shouldn't have to be working around them. She's abhorrent.
The National Autistic Society made a statement in response.

We're going full circle here. I'll concede that the Tories are the progressive party when you tell me their progressive policies.

ChillysWaterBottle · 02/11/2024 16:22

She's economically hard right. Her original mat pay comments - before she backtracked - were right on brand.

She hacked Harriet Harman's website when she was younger.

She didn’t do or say any of this though did she. It’s easily checked. Why lie?

Exactly this.

She is a dangerous bigot who will knowingly spout off deliberately controversial comments in order to distract from her shortcomings.

She's a habitual liar who has had to correct Hansard multiple times and is known to misuse statistics.

In the last leadership contest she was the only candidate endorsed by Britain First which tells you a lot about what she stands for.

It is shameful that the Tories have elected her leader and marks yet another step towards the hard-right.

I hope her tenure is short and that she's gone before the next election because the thought of her as PM is genuinely chilling.

seasonofmellowfruitfulness · 02/11/2024 17:39

I found her comments about children with SEN highly offensive. On that basis alone I would never vote for her. Here is the response from the national autistic society.

Random person spreads baseless gossip and it concerns you?
That sounds like a smear campaign.

Similar was said about Liz Truss, if I recall. BDSM necklace apparently.

By all accounts a good constituency MP

Ha! I'm in her constituency and would strongly disagree with that. She doesn't spend much time here.

She'll hold Starmer to account and has done well to win the leadership race

Only interview I've head in full was on Monday afternoon on radio 2.
She is a Mrs Thatcher supporter, she wasn't too keen on her more 'leftie ' friends at Sussex Uni , she came over to the Uk with only 100 pounds from her dad and ended up working shifts in McDonalds to fund her engineering degree. She feels that engineering helps people be a lot more grounded and pragmatic. She was born in Nigeria.
She back tracked a bit about her comments over mat pay , but she admitted she had mat pay twice. She has three children and is now the leader of the opposition

She was born in Wimbledon, so in the UK. Her parents were Nigerian and she spent a fair chunk of her childhood there (Lagos).

She still lives much more in Wimbledon than she does in our constituency (North West Essex), although to be fair, she's unlikely to be the only MP who doesn't live locally in their constituency.

Seasmoke · 02/11/2024 18:37

Elektra1 · 02/11/2024 12:15

She made some unhelpful comments on how maternity pay has "gone too far", which I thought was an odd stance to take as a woman.

The maternity pay thing made no sense at all, andxwas clearly red meat to throw to the Tory membership, many of whom retired many years ago and have no idea about mat pay. She said ' maternity pay has gone too far' then clarified to say she meant the burden is too much on government. Employers can claim back 105% ( I think) of statutory mat pay. Women pay NI to be entitled to it. Did she mean 100% of the cost should be on employers? It made no sense, and if that is an example of her policies then she's inconsequential because the Tories would have cycled through another leadership contest or two by the time of the next election. Luckily it's not Robert Generic and his ' Let's leave the echr because leaving the EU was so easy!'

her voting record gives you an idea of what the Tories believe, not what she personally believes. Lots of votes are whipped, MPs have to follow the party line whether they agree or not. That’s just how political parties work. Occasionally an individual MP will make a stand on a subject they feel strongly about but typically they go along with whips because otherwise the party doesn’t have a coherent message.
