Any one else with a favourite song from the nineties that no one else remembers?

Mine is Operaa House by Malcolm McLaren. I spent many a happy hour being driven through New Zealand as a kid torturing my parents by singing along to this and Aria on Air but no one I’ve meet seems to know of it. Still absolutely adore it as an adult but sadly no better at singing it.

Loved this song. I remember the words!

Their follow up single was Istanbul not Constantinople, why did Constantinople get the works? That's no-one's business but the Turks.

That’s funny as literally other day James o Brian on lbc mentioned that song and so I had that playing very funny song

So many great songs mentioned already. I also loved listening to Atlantic 252.
Does anyone remember To Be With You by Mr Big? And Everything About You by Ugly Kid Joe? Baby I Love Your Way by Big Mountain is another good one.
Great thread!

Yes to Mr Big, UKJ and Big Mountain's Baby I loce your way, which was also another Reality Bites song.

Had a bit of a crush on Eric Martin at the time. He's done a few solo covers of well known ballads by female singers/bands including Eternal Flame.

Anyone remember Black Hole Sun by Sound Garden? The video was played a lot on MTV which was really creepy. RIP Chris Cornell.

Specksofwhiteallaround · 01/11/2024 22:46

@Noisylass Im glad it’s not just me who’s heard of them, I remember telling my other half they had at least three albums and he was extremely dubious 😅

There are some great 90s songs here but many of them don't fit the brief of 'no one else remembers'. E.g. To Be With You by Mr Big reached no.1 in 12 countries including the UK and USA. I doubt it's forgotten by anyone old enough to have been following the charts in 1991 - I'd certainly call it to mind straight away if asked to list hits from that year.

I can’t pick one!

On and On by Longpigs
Anywhere by Dubstar
Secret Smile by Semisonic
Olympian by Gene
If You Don’t Want Me to Destroy You by Super Furry Animals
I Alone by Live
King of the Kerb by Echobelly.

I’ve got more 😊

We like the same music.
Mine is Attack of the grey lantern by Mansun

taxguru · 01/11/2024 22:53

I need love released by Olivia Newton John. Quite popular on the club scene but never hit the charts as she was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly after its release so couldn’t do any marketing appearances for it in the media. I listen to it a lot. Really could have been a huge hit for her as it was very apt for that era in terms of beat and electronics etc. Produced by Georgio Moroder and written by Steve Kipner so excellent pedigree.

LongDistanceClara44 · 01/11/2024 22:53

You came close...close but no cigar...

I think you mean “never was a cornflake girl” which was Cornflake Girl by Tori Amos.

Wantmyoldlifeback · 01/11/2024 22:54

Atlantic 252!! Aww, such fond memories of listening to it under my duvet at night 🤷🏻‍♀️i always remember they played Mariah and that song ‘Building a bridge to your heart, make a new start, build a bridge to your heart’ 😂
Those who were into Atlantic 252, how old are you now, out of interest? I’m 46

I loved Dear Jessie by Madonna (late 80s I think rather than 90s), lots of people I've spoken to don't know it at all.

I've had the same trouble getting people to recall that Madonna track... prob coz it never seems to be on DJs playlists.
Another Madonna track seldom played is (probably called someone different) "Hanky Spanky" .... 🤭

Yes!! I knew the words were probably wrong but hoped someone would be along with the right ones 😊

Has anyone else heard Under the Water by Merril Bainbridge? I was obsessed with her album but no one I’ve met since leaving NZ seems to have heard of her.

I LOVED Merril Bainbridge! I'm uk based but did camp America 3 times in the mid 90s so I find my 90s music memories are quite different from my friends.
Listened to her, Sarah McLaughlin, Paula cole, nelly furtado...basically the lillith fair line up!
I'd been all happy hardcore before that so it was quite a departure!

I know the Stereophonics were huge but you never hear of their 1st album these days. Word Gets Around is one of those rare albums where every track is brilliant. Def one to add to your playlists.

I agree wholeheartedly. It’s an amazing album. See also Travis’ first album. They never got close to the raw energy of that album again

Roxette - Paint. I am only 29 but I grew up with my Mum listening to their albums, and sadly not one of my friends knows any of their songs apart from 'It must've been love'. Breaks my heart. Such an underrated band.

Edited

I know this song! I loved Roxette as a child and saw them at Wembley!

Don't know Under the Water but I bought the single of Mouth when it came out in the UK which would have been autumn of 1996. A friend had been on holiday to Australia in summer 95 when it was popular there so I had heard it and loved it via her, and went out to buy it as soon as it was released. The B side was a cover of the Pet Shop Boys' Being Boring
