My son is in the room with me and he's eating.

Gobble gobble chomp chomp grunt ahhhh grunt chomp gobble gobble sigh.

How loaded is your fucking fork if you're grunting like you're deadlifting a horse?

I feel a murderous rage and at the same time i want to cry.

I hate eating with people and avoid it as much as possible because not only do I fantasise about plucking people's eyes out with my fork and beating them to death with it but I'm so paranoid about my own eating noises that I can't force food down and need to take tiny bites and drink water to force each bite down.

My sister is blind and came to stay. We had to eat together so i sat at the other side of the room and I had to have her play an audio book while I had a towel that I shoved in front of my mouth while I chewed in an attempt to muffle any noise I might make.

I know it's a condition people joke about and don't take seriously but it's utterly miserable to have to cope with this.

I want to yell at my son which is unreasonable and unfair so I won't but the pent up rage feels like a physical pain in my chest.

I'd love to talk with fellow sufferers about this godawful thing.

Misery loves company, I suppose.

Edit - my late dad had it too. I remember him yelling at me that my dinner was already dead so I didn't need to growl at it. That is when I started to become paranoid about making any noise when eating.

Sticky mouth! 😂 When we went into lockdown and I had to record all my lectures to put them online, I had to rerecord them so many times because I couldn't stand it if I made any slight noises like that!

NewZealandintherain · 02/11/2024 19:32

My husband clangs his cutlery off his teeth. Horrific. I can’t be in the room when he’s eating with a spoon.

You think pig is bad?
My other kid can ge a twat sometimes.
Do you need smelling salts?

Do you think I speak out loud as I type? I think you're very funny.

Sweet that you're seemingly offended on my son's behalf for things I say anonymously on line that he doesn't know about.

He doesn't know you want to kill him. That's still not ok?

There is an ologie podcast in this with a few different options to help.

https://www.alieward.com/ologies/misophonology

It is a fun podcast but there is swearing (not kid friendly).

Ooh thanks, that looks interesting.

Yes i suffer too!
i dont go to the cinema bc all i can hear is people crunching, smacking their lips…
Drives me crazy.

FantaIsFine · 02/11/2024 22:20

Another brilliant podcast about it
open.spotify.com/episode/4zZT7QOvPQMCk04f0mc3wL?si=xEjjVaKCSQukkpFowV1Gew

It's about the reactions and the brain.

I find it super interesting that a noise that REALLY bugs me like a phone on loudspeaker is situational. So it doesn't annoy me so much (not saying it doesn't annoy me) if it is a child watching something vs an adult, which makes me truly stabby. Same noise

The list of things that gets me is pages long

I'm not proud of myself but I've started offering strangers tissues on public transport if they just Won't Stop Sniffing
😀

And pointing out to people they might not realise they are on loudspeaker. Or in a quiet carriage on the train...

Sounds fab, going to listen in a minute when going to bed!!!

Solidarity! Being at the dinner table with my mother has taken years off my life. She has a clicky bridge, and sometimes it makes this awful noise that gives me a horrible jolt of terror and disgust that hits me right in my diaphragm and breastbone.

She also makes unbearable little smacking noises with her mouth, all the time. And when she eats something she enjoys she makes little appreciative ‘mmm’ noises. And I love her so much but I often have to dig my fingernails into my arm until I bleed just to keep myself from screaming and flinging my dinner out the window and stabbing my eyes out with my cutlery.

Any misophonists out there also hypersensitive to smells? There’s a smell in the house I’m staying in that is so unbearable that I’m not able to eat or drink. But apparently nobody else can smell it and I’m being a diva. 😔

Gettingbysomehow · 02/11/2024 22:44

Good God dont even go there.
I have such bad misophonia I cannot tolerate living with anyone else. The only people who I can stand eating with are DS and DIL, they both have great manners.
I grew up with a mother who has severe nervous tics and by the time I left home I was almost insane. The constant clicking and choking noises. I feel incredibly wound up just thinking about it.
I haven't seen her in years. I can't go there without a very hefty dose of valium.

CheeseDreamsTonight · 02/11/2024 22:53

God I have this too. I hate the rage so much. My boss has started chewing gum and standing over my shoulder at work to dictate an email. I lose all ability to type.

CrazyGoatLady · 02/11/2024 22:54

Ooof, solidarity. I'm autistic and have misophonia too. Cereal eating is my Kryptonite! Crunching AND sloshing...urrrgh. And people licking their fingers 😱

Loop earplugs and background noise help. Stress definitely makes it worse. I coped better before perimenopause hit. Sometimes I just have to pretend I need a wee to remove myself for a couple of minutes and give myself a break from the relentless mouth noises during family meals!

DearRussell · 02/11/2024 22:56

I have it very badly. Tonight my little boy was bashing his teeth with the spoon at every mouthful. He’s not normally the one that troubles me but I had to say something tonight

DearRussell · 02/11/2024 22:57

I’m interested in the earplug ideas. I normally have to sit apart from everyone at mealtimes and have the tv on loudly

MillenialAvocado · 02/11/2024 22:58

I have this too. It started when I was 15 when I noticed the sound of my Dad biting his nailsNothing to offer really other than sympathy.

MillenialAvocado · 02/11/2024 23:00

Oops posted too soon 😬 I find eating noises really difficult at work too, as well as people chewing gum. Earplugs and headphones either white noise are my best friend

GauntJudy · 02/11/2024 23:04

Blueberrymuffin8 · 01/11/2024 20:21

I have really bad misophonia to the point where I have to leave the room if my husband / dad/ brother/ MIL/ Mum eat next to me. The only people I don't get this with are my 2 boys. No idea why but their eating doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Same here I'm irritated by everybody's chewing, breathing and leg juddering - except for my son's. Somehow he could eat an apple while on the phone to me and I'd be fine. A miracle.

RachelNoire · 02/11/2024 23:06

Have you all self-diagnosed misophonia or something you’ve been to GP about just out of interest? Not being goady, am genuinely interested to know.

LargeJugs · 02/11/2024 23:08

Is your son actually eating like a pig? Putting too much in his mouth and not closing his mouth?

I have misophonia ... but many people do legit have awful eating habits.

Moonshine5 · 02/11/2024 23:10

It's hard and ime people don't understand that it's a real thing.

IHateFireworks · 02/11/2024 23:16

I am a fellow sufferer. Weirdly i can cope with the cats chomping. She cant help it. i am a shy person. I literally screamed at my colleague at work sitting next to me eating an apple. He did it every day. Crunch of the bite. Crunch and chewed with gob wide open then gulp swallow then repeat. Also extended family member eating with mouth open. Makes family meets uncomfortable for me.

ThePoshUns · 02/11/2024 23:18

My people! I can't cope with noisy eating, sniffing, mouth breathing, whistling, I'm sure there is more!
I can't eat a meal in a silent room with DH, without wanting to tip his dinner over his head.

IHateFireworks · 02/11/2024 23:34

Also my family are well trained. They both ask if they can sit with me while eating when I am not eating. I reply depending what meal. Pasta ok, they both know not to slurp spaghetti. I do the same. If im eating on my own will ask family if I can eat in room with them.? I think my daughter is a fellow sufferer.

TakeMyLifeAndLetItBe · 02/11/2024 23:53

It's so awful when I can feel the panic rising in me, as someone opens a packet of crisps or pours some cereal out. Or if I'm at a get together and the plate of biscuits gets passed around, I often take one so my own eating noises in my head will muffle others. I'm also so sensitive to how loud I when I'm eating, that it bothers me for that person if they sit next to me and I'm eating but they're not.
I'm so fed up with it, hate the fight or flight that it induces and wish that I could be totally oblivious to eating noises. Sniffing and other mouth noises drive me mad too. Urgh, I feel your pain OP.

Blinky21 · 03/11/2024 00:00

Yes and I'm sensitive to lots of noises, can't bear music or tvs being too loud, it makes me feel really panicky and stressed.
