I need an excuse for leaving work early

In a bit of a situation. I have to do some training for my new employer. The issue is that I'm still working in my old job (I'm part time). I need 3 hours to go and do this training but because of the time they want me, I will only have to take an hour off. I'm not in poor health and because of the fact that last year I had a lot of time off I don't want to call in for the whole day. Ideally, I wouldn't have to lie but I can't think of any reason why I would have to leave ab hour early.

I'm wondering if anyone has a good excuse that I could use. I haven't lied in years and this isn't coming naturally to me. Can anyone help??

Tell them you got the phone call from school that your child is sick and you need to pick them up asap.

Ohnobackagain · 01/11/2024 22:56

@CharlieDickens say you need to be home for an hour and you will make the time up another day

Doctor/dentist appointment. It’s really not rocket science. Or just say you don’t feel well.

Normallynumb · 01/11/2024 23:25

I would just say medical appointment

EternalSunshine19 · 01/11/2024 23:26

Dentist appointment.

Futurethinking2026 · 01/11/2024 23:30

Surely you have a hospital appointment? They sent you times, you don’t get to choose them like dentist or opticians.

People saying tell the true, no company is going to willing allow you time off to go train for a new company!

Please not this one. Genuine migraine sufferers are treated like slivers as it is with everyone thinking it’s a lie.

I've never used this as an excuse in my life so it would be obvious. I've had issues with anxiety in the past and for the same reason would never use that as an excuse. It's really miserable on the days when I've been awake all night and feeling anxious.

If you're young - heavy period has caught you on the hop & you're about to "leak"/have leaked. Helps if you can tie coat or cardigan around waist.

If you're menopausal- a sudden gush of blood.

Men will wave you away. Women will sympathise.

Maybe tell the truth? Really surprised at all the lies and excuses

Same.

You are unable to take part in this training as you are still employed and haven't yet finished working for your soon to be previous employer,. it's quite cheeky of your new employers to expect this. Red flag

WinterFoxes · 02/11/2024 06:04

Just say you have sn appointment you can't change and you need to leave early. They probably won't ask why but if they do, you say it is personal.
That way, you are not lying.

MosaDiCello · 02/11/2024 06:23

Say you have an appointment booked for an engineer to attend your property as you have no hot water.

sashh · 02/11/2024 06:26

Do you wear heels at work?

Wear your oldest pair, go to the toilet and, 'oh no, my heel broke, look I can't walk in these I need to get a repair'.

Get someone to send you a text saying there is an opening for a dental / GP / other appointment due to a cancelation.
