I need an excuse for leaving work early

In a bit of a situation. I have to do some training for my new employer. The issue is that I'm still working in my old job (I'm part time). I need 3 hours to go and do this training but because of the time they want me, I will only have to take an hour off. I'm not in poor health and because of the fact that last year I had a lot of time off I don't want to call in for the whole day. Ideally, I wouldn't have to lie but I can't think of any reason why I would have to leave ab hour early.

I'm wondering if anyone has a good excuse that I could use. I haven't lied in years and this isn't coming naturally to me. Can anyone help??

Lol. This is the best so far.

I was going to say something similar!

When I last interviewed for a job, I told my then boss the day before that my boiler had broken and I'd got an emergency plumber coming round and I needed to take a couple of hours off.

Maybe tell the truth? Really surprised at all the lies and excuses

The problem is they'd be entirely within their right to say no to the request for time off, and then what's OP to do?

Fisharenotfoods · 01/11/2024 14:58

Emergency dentist appointment - I think
part of your filling fell out at lunch? Only time they could see you?

Ohnonina · 01/11/2024 15:02

Honestly I would just feign illness, d&v, migraine, severe period pain, any of those would do. Keep it simple I think OP, just say you feel too unwell to work and need to go home.

I think this is the most believable.

Can't you just ask to come in an hour earlier and leave an hour earlier as you've something personal you need to attend to and you ca. Only get an appointment then?

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 01/11/2024 15:27

Boiler broken - literally everyone's boiler has broken the last few weeks!

I'd assumed the OP had thought of that by themselves and decided against it before starting the thread tbh.

yukikata · 01/11/2024 15:36

Why can't you tell the truth?

ChaosHol1 · 01/11/2024 15:42

Just tell them you've got a doctors appointment and need to leave an hour early.

purplebeansprouts · 01/11/2024 15:43

If you're leaving the job soon then pull a sickie

NotMeNoNo · 01/11/2024 15:45

Can you not just say you have a personal appointment, and sorry but it's something private. If you are making the time up or otherwise covering would they refuse it?

soberfabulous · 01/11/2024 15:50

I get 15 days sick in my job. I haven't taken a day sick in around 9 years... I'm very healthy. This month I plan on taking a tactical migraine.

Presumably they know that she is leaving. So if they refuse to let her have the time off she could just ignore them and lose an hour's pay.
I wouldn't lie I'd just say you have an important appointment that has to be at that time

What can they actually do.

80smonster · 01/11/2024 16:06

Smear test - no one wants to chat lady business in my experience. Works particularly well if you have a male line manager.

Motherofdragons20 · 01/11/2024 16:31

Honestly just say you have diarrhoea and excuse youself. Nobody questions diarrhoea and nobody wants you there if you have it. Offer to make the time up if you really won’t but you have a new job so presumably references etc have been done so does it really matter what your sickness record is?

Why do you think it's more believable to say you have a smear test than just to say you have a medical appointment? 😕

I've never heard of anyone asking a follow up question of "so what's your medical appointment for then?"

Boiler broken - literally everyone's boiler has broken the last few weeks!

this is such a well-known trope that in our office we all have collective eyeroll
when we hear the old boiler excuse

Iliketulips · 01/11/2024 17:08

Boiler repair is a good one, as long as you know your current employer will let you go.

Otherwise, given you'll have to lie anyway, phone in with a sickie - that way, you know nothing can delay you leaving.

herecomesautumn · 01/11/2024 18:01

Why don't you just tell the truth. You're leaving anyway so what does it matter

What a lot of drama for something so simple

AmyFFismyhomegirl · 01/11/2024 18:15

Just tell the truth. Make up the hour or don't get paid for it. Why are you set on being dishonest?

Ilovemyshed · 01/11/2024 19:15

Dental emergency is useful.

I can't tell them because I haven't handed my notice in and I'm worried they will say no. Both jobs are part-time and ordinarily would be very manageable. It's just this training that's an issue.

Migraine?

Please not this one. Genuine migraine sufferers are treated like slivers as it is with everyone thinking it’s a lie.

Please use another excuse. Genuine migraine sufferer here who struggles to be believed. Tell them you have the shots instead.
