If you do a job you love, what do you do?

Just that really. On SAHM vs working mum threads on here I consistently see people talking about how much they love their jobs and I always wonder what they do. I'm on mat leave at the moment with my second baby and, as with my first, I can't say I miss work at all. I'm in a pretty senior role and seem to spend 90% of my time sitting through incredibly tedious meetings. I'm in my mid thirties and never really enjoyed working tbh, despite a range of sectors and different roles. Thinking of possibly rethinking my career after this baby and would love to hear what those who actually enjoy their jobs do.

Another happy doctor… obviously has its moments but so interesting and varied, I laugh with my patients and colleagues most days, really feel I make a difference to people who are (mostly!) so grateful, and get to stretch my brain and problem solve. The days also fly by because it’s always busy, no such thing as clock watching! Decent money and as much overtime as I can manage.

Ghost writer, I take another person’s ramblings and shape them into books people want to read.

I would love to do this. How do you get into this? I've an English degree and an MA in creative writing. Always wanted to write but just never managed to do it for a job.

Assistant manager in hospitality. I took a career break for the NHS after dc2, got a part time job in a pub then have had a couple of promotions since dc3 started school full time. I love it. I do work 45hours a week, including evenings and weekends, which isn’t ideal, but I feel lucky to have found a second career I enjoy.

TulipTuesday · 01/11/2024 17:31

NHS call centre, taking prescription orders by phone or email.

Always really busy but this makes the days fly by, and it can be a bit repetitive at times. But the patients we speak to are (mostly) lovely, and I like helping them. I work half the week from home and we’re a great team who get along well so I enjoy going in to the office for a catch up.

I’m a reporter for the local newspaper. The pay is abysmal but every day is different and I love getting out and about and finding out about everything that’s going on in the area and sharing it. There are some incredibly inspirational people around and being able to share their achievements and projects and get them into the public eye is what makes my job so rewarding. There are some heartbreaking and tragic stories I have to cover too - but getting the balance of sensitivity to those involved while also sharing the facts makes it worthwhile. The best thing for me is that I get to spend every day talking to people and writing. And I get the camaraderie of an office without being tied to a desk all day. I also get to wfh one day a week so I can catch up with laundry on my lunch break.

Not qualified yet but I'm a student midwife. I love it and couldn't imagine doing anything else.

mamaduckbone · 01/11/2024 18:01

I'm a primary school teacher and although it's bloody hard work I do love it.

HazeyjaneIII · 01/11/2024 22:21

I loved my time as a a SAHM when my kids were little and was a carer to my disabled sone qhilst working very part time for years.
Now I'm able to work more, as long as it is in school hours
Fortunately, I love my job as a TA. I feel privileged to be able to help children and work with people who i look forward to seeing.
I just wish it was better paid, that there was more time in the day to do the 5000 things I have to do, and that the funding was there to give children the support they need.
(...and that I wasn't so knackered!)

I'm a GP and I love it

Why do you think that you like so much but all we here on the news is that GPs are struggling?

Are you in the UK?

Emilyjayne9421 · 02/11/2024 00:16

I’m training to be a solicitor in the Wills and probate department. I enjoy it, it gives me a lot of satisfaction to help people with their problems. Although family and friends seem to think I know the answers to all their legal issues when I absolutely do not!

Im a professional artist. Career has moved from being a graphic designer to illustrator to now being a painter. Love it!

I'm a secondary school teacher (Maths) and head of department. I can't imagine ever not teaching- despite all the usual grumbles it is the best job in the world.

I'm in a similar role but English not Maths. I work in a supposedly challenging school in am area of high deprivation - but the kids are (almost all) lovely. The job is never dull - schools are funny, eventful, exciting places. And you never doubt your own worth - every day you know you are making a contribution to society

I feel enormously privileged to have my job - it's a real pleasure.

Malbecmerlot · 02/11/2024 00:27

I’m a Forest School person and I love it; being outdoors and facilitating children engaging in nature and beyond

Penelope1703 · 02/11/2024 15:37

@IMustDoMoreExercise Yes I'm a GP in the UK - NHS - have never worked in the private sector.

GPs are struggling generally because it's an immensely stressful job, and complex. We look after very vulnerable people and as a nation we're collectively traumatised by covid, austerity, modern life, and that can take its toll. I think some GPs chose the wrong profession mistakenly thinking it's easy or good for family life. It's neither, particularly.

I love it because I find people and their bodies endlessly fascinating. I love looking after young people I knew as little babies, and older people I knew as working age adults. I have never been bored at work. I do something different every 12 minutes. I find the trust patients place in me an immense privilege and I work hard to live up to that trust. I take great care to make what might be a scary day or the worst time in a persons life, a little bit easier by offering compassion and comfort. I also have a most excellent team of other doctors and clinicians, and admin people. My partners are like my family and we all care for one another. I also find it very stimulating intellectually; particularly the consultation skills. I teach trainee GPs and I get a lot of satisfaction from that too.

There are times when it's been very hard and I have struggled with my mental health and juggling work and family (GPs especially female GPs have an unusually high suicide rate) but most of the time I can't imagine ever doing anything else.

Marchitectmummy · 03/11/2024 08:31

I mainly love my job I'm an architect but own a practice with a few other partners. I enjoy both aspects, running the business and leading architectural projects. It is very stressful buildings are expensive and when things do not go right blame invariably is levelled at architects. But the reward of creating something you are proud of is always there.

FishBowlSwimmer · 03/11/2024 09:17

For the first time in my life I can genuinely say that I love my job. I work as an Activities Coordinator for a care home. I get paid to read to people, play games with people, do crafts with people, etc., also get to do displays and decorations which I love. It's never boring and it's really lovely spending time with these people. I didn't think it was possible to love a job this much.

Aaah, sounds lovely! I know someone who used to do this job, and loved it too.

Destiny123 · 03/11/2024 15:04

Anaesthetist. Love the job. Less so the 3h commute, count down till feb

CountryShepherd · 03/11/2024 15:22

I'm a fundraising relationship manager for a mid sized UK charity. Absolutely love it - people facing, creative, lovely colleagues, wfh but plenty of travel, v flexible, feeling v worthwhile but get a huge buzz from large fundraising challenges plus no 2 days are ever the same.

It's a career I've ended up in quite late in life - but the best is yet to come!

Isthiscorrect · 03/11/2024 15:30

Senior school librarian, before I retired. Great job. Absolutely loved it. No time for reading books at work. But great fun. A very important safe space.
