If you do a job you love, what do you do?

Just that really. On SAHM vs working mum threads on here I consistently see people talking about how much they love their jobs and I always wonder what they do. I'm on mat leave at the moment with my second baby and, as with my first, I can't say I miss work at all. I'm in a pretty senior role and seem to spend 90% of my time sitting through incredibly tedious meetings. I'm in my mid thirties and never really enjoyed working tbh, despite a range of sectors and different roles. Thinking of possibly rethinking my career after this baby and would love to hear what those who actually enjoy their jobs do.

I work with mum’s and their babies.

I love it but if I could be a stay at home mum I would in a heartbeat.

gmgnts · 01/11/2024 12:52

This is such a heartening thread! So good to hear that there are teachers and nurses out there who really love their jobs.

Penguinsa · 01/11/2024 12:52

Economist, always loved it

I can't say I love my job all the time but some days I really do. I am a benefits advisor and there is nothing more satisfying than helping people who are really struggling to get the help they need. I have had two such cases this week where people were really desperate and I have helped them to navigate the system and get help. The downside is that we also get a lot of people quite frankly taking the pee and trying to pull the wool over our eyes and that just makes me want to have a change of career !

I think I would enjoy this.

I enjoy the SAHM life tbh!

I enjoy my job but wouldn't say I love it. I don't miss it when I'm not there and if I win the lottery I'd quit and open an animal sanctuary...

I work in procurement in commercial real estate.

A very happy teacher here. The workload is awful and utterly relentless. But my god, the kids are amazing and keep you going. No day is the same!

Agree this is a great thread! Happy to see lots of variety and types of sector. But I feel good representation from speech therapy 🙂. I'm full time NHS (not working today!) and have often thought how much I don't want to work privately, so it just shows there's a pot for every lid.

T.a in a secondary which is heaven after working in a Primary.
No stress everything behaviour wise is dealt with by SLT and learning managers.

Goodness what a brainy and interesting lot you are!!!

🤣 front line.True though.

It’s generally not the job, just that you like working or prefer doing other things with your time.

I love my job - teaching assistant, but then I’ve always loved working, in plenty of different jobs over forty years.

coxesorangepippin · 01/11/2024 13:38

I work in insurance

The job I do is boring, but it's well paid and pretty much WFH all the time (twice a month in the office). So I love the benefits, but not so much the actual job. It's fairly low volume too.

Pension etc are great

jollygoose · 01/11/2024 13:42

I am a counsellor and well being advisor in a university and truly enjoy my job.

indigoemerald · 01/11/2024 13:59

I work at a university in a student-facing role. The pay isn’t great, but I work in a lovely team and enjoy being able to make a difference to students - the work my department does, helps students in the long run (improves their confidence and careers prospects etc) and that is a very nice feeling.

WaveAcrossTheBay · 01/11/2024 14:19

I’m a paediatric nurse. Some days I hate it: it can be very sad and very stressful and I don’t like the days I am too busy to do the things I want for my patients or the days there isn’t time to eat or drink or go to the toilet in 13hrs and I leave late. But, mostly I love it: I work with an amazing team of people, the patients and their families are often great to work with, I get to cuddle babies sometimes, I make a difference to people.

Saschka · 01/11/2024 14:22

Doctor (specifically a kidney specialist).

The main reason I really love my job is my colleagues honestly - they make or break your department. Mine are great. The work is always interesting, but when I retire it’s my colleagues I will miss most.

Oblomov24 · 01/11/2024 14:48

I do accounts. Love it, find it easy, satisfying.

@loverrr DM'd you

I'm in a very senior role in publishing. I absolutely love it. I'm only in my 30s and it's taken a lot to get to this point so early, but my plan has always been to be able to move to Norway (DH's home), and he put his own career on hold for me. He worked as a university lecturer for years so I could do this, and so I did it and worked damn hard. Now he's finally been able to move on from lecturing (historian).

My colleagues are amazing. My boss is incredible. I WFH and will be able to continue to do so when we move. With this experience, I'll be able to find another job easily if I ever needed to. I speak to interesting people every day. My life is absolutely full and I genuinely cannot believe I get to wake up and do it! I'm from a working class background, was the first in my family to go to university, and never thought I'd have a life like this.

Wolfwalkssoftly · 01/11/2024 16:59

Ghost writer, I take another person’s ramblings and shape them into books people want to read.

pinkhousesarebest · 01/11/2024 17:01

So lovely to read these inspiring posts and realize it is possible to love your job. I have often wondered what it must be like to go to work without the dread ( teaching).

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 01/11/2024 17:06

Job coach at a Danish jobcentre with the insured unemployed. I only have public sector workers who are usually lovely and also competent.

Bramshott · 01/11/2024 09:46

I'm a stage manager. I love it, but the pay is shit.

I’m a dresser. Yes it is.

It’s why I have to have a full time day job. I work in travel, and I absolutely love both of my jobs.

EqualityDuck · 01/11/2024 17:16

Another very happy teacher here (secondary)!
